S ENS ORY GARDEN CONCEPT: Ex tensive use of the sensory g ar d en c o n c ept th at al l ows th e red u cti o n i n dementia sy mptoms and improves th ei r q u al i ty of l i fe. T h ey m eet th e s afety, therapeutic, physical and sens or y n eed s of th e p ati ents . T h e m ai n i d ea b ehind the sensory garden is to sti m u l ate th e s en s es . T h i s i n c l u d es u s i n g p l ants and materials which stimulate th e v i s u al , au d i to r y, tacti l e, o l factor y an d taste sense. 1. Visual stimulation – color of th e p l ant or c o l o r fu l m ater i al 2. Auditory stimulation – birds c h i r p i n g , s o u n d s of water m oti o n , w i n d c h i m es 3. Olfactory stimulation – plant s w i th var i ou s fam i l i ar s m el l s 4. Tactile stimulation – crunchy l eaves , p l ants w i th tex tu red l eaves , tex tu red materials 5. Taste stimulation – plants w i th taste, fr u i ts RAI N GARDEN: Rain garden is a garden of native s h r u b s , p eren n i al s an d fl owers p l anted i n a small depression. I t is formed on a n atu ral s l o p e. T h e g ar d en tem p o rar i l y h ol d s and soaks in rain water runof f. Ab ou t 6-12 i n c h es of s o i l i s rem oved an d altered with tillage, compost and s an d fo r th e i n c reas e i n water fi l trati o n . N o fertilizer is needed and it requi res m i n i m al m ai nten an c e. R ai n g ar d en req u i res a moderate slope of around 3-11% or a fl at d ep res s i o n . C O N C E P T T h e si t e gi ven for t h i s project was C.V. Raman House i n t h e h ea r t of Ma l l es h waram, Bangalore. S ince it is a h e ri t a ge bu i l di n g, i t wa s important to preserve its i m po r t a nt a n d n ot t ea r i t down. The site is densely po pu l at ed w i t h green er y which was important to save t o o . T h e con cept of t h e building is simple - the library bu i l d i n g l ooks i n wa r ds a n d a sense of visual curiousity i s c reat ed. T h e pat h ways eventually lead to the centre of t h e s i t e, t owa r ds t h e C.V. Raman house. The C.V. R a m an h ou s e i s t h e ma i n focus on the site. The library do e s n ot t a ke away t h e i mportance of the building.
