2017-18 SQUASH

CRAIG DAWSON | HEAD COACH

Craig Dawson was able to fulfill a lifelong dream in March of 2000 when the 1973 graduate of the Naval Academy was handed over the reigns to direct the Navy squash program. The Navy squash program has flourished under Dawson’s direction. In fact, Navy has won at least 15 matches in each of Dawson’s 17 seasons as head coach. Additionally, the Navy squash program has enjoyed just 11 20-win seasons over the course of its 69-year history with Dawsonled teams conquering the 20-win plateau nine times including seven of the last nine seasons. Navy broke the school record for wins in 2008-09 by turning in a 27-8 record. In 2009-10, the Mids followed up with a 26-8 mark, in 2010-11 they posted a 23-10 record, in 2011-12 they recorded a 23-7 record and in 2012-13 Navy produced a 25-9 record. While the Mids posted a 20-6 mark a year ago, the six losses are the fewest by Navy since the 1992-93 campaign when it posted a 16-6 record. Dawson became Navy’s all-time winningest coach on Dec. 1, 2012, by leading the Mids to an 8-1 win over Tufts. He enters his 18th season as the Mids’ head coach boasting a 348-144 (70.7) record. While playing both tennis and squash for Navy, Dawson was an All-America squash player and an All-East singles and doubles player. Additionally, he was the captain of both teams during his senior season. Over his 17-year coaching career, several personal and program achievements have been accomplished. • In 2014-15, team captain Andrew McGuinness was named one of three finalists for the College Squash Association’s Skillman Award. The award is presented annually to the senior men’s squash player who has demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship during his entire collegiate career. • Bill Kacergis (‘16) and Senen Ubina (‘19) paired up to win the 2015 U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship, the program’s first doubles national championship title. A year later, Randy Beck (‘17) and Jack Herold (‘18) teamed to up win their first U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles title. • In the fall of 2015, Senen Ubina (‘19) became just the fourth freshman in the history of the Barb Tournament to win the trophy. He is the third player under Dawson’s watch to achieve the feat, joining Tucker George (‘08) and Andrew McGuinness (‘15). • Navy earned a 6-3 win over Williams in 2014-15, the program’s first over the Ephs since 1993. It was also the Mids’ first win over Williams in Annapolis since 1968. • The Mids also posted a 5-4 win over Princeton in 2014-15, marking Navy’s first victory over the Tigers since 1985. • On Nov. 15, 2014, Craig Dawson won his 300th career match as Navy posted a 9-0 win over Hobart. • On Dec. 1, 2012, Craig Dawson became the program’s all-time winningest coach after his Mids put together three wins on the afternoon including an 8-1 win over Tufts to give him the record. • In 2011-12, despite fielding one of the program’s youngest teams in recent memory (five plebes playing among the top five), the Mids scored a 5-4 win over ninth-ranked Western Ontario. It was Navy’s first win over the Canadian team. • In 2010-11, Allan Lutz became the program’s all-time wins leader with a 99-36 record. • Andrew McGuinness (‘15) and Jim Kacergis (‘15) became the first freshman tandem to meet in the finals of the Barb Tournament in the competition’s history which was established in 1958. • 2009-10 team captain Nils Mattsson left his mark on the program by earning All-America honors in his senior campaign and finishing with a No. 22 national ranking. • 2008 graduate Tucker George, the program’s only four-time winner of the Barb Trophy, was selected as Navy’s first All-American since Jamie Slough in 1994.

Jeff Sawin looked to have the match sewn up when teammate Nils Mattsson, a freshman, rallied for the title. • Dawson led Navy to a 24-7 record in 2004-05, establishing a school record for wins in a season. • In 2003-14, exchange student Kinleong Ho was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship by his home country of Singapore. • Navy was the recipient of the 2001-02 Team Sportsmanship Coaches Award at the NISRA Championship Banquet.

ANDY MCCANN | ASSISTANT COACH Andy McCann, who joined the program as an assistant coach in the fall of 2014, is no stranger to the Naval Academy, nor the Navy squash program. The 2002 Naval Academy graduate was a four-year letterwinner for Craig Dawson’s Midshipmen squash program, who served as team captain his senior year. Additionally, McCann is one of just five players in program history to win the USS Barb Squash Racquets Perpetual Trophy three or more times, winning it in each of his last three seasons (2000-01-02). Upon graduation, McCann spent 11 years as a surface warfare officer in the United States Navy. Aboard the USS Underwood FFG-36 based out of Mayport, Fla., he served as Repair Division Officer and Damage Control Assistant and served deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea, Caribbean Sea and Persian Gulf. 2017-18 SQUASH

USS BARB SQUASH RACQUETS PERPETUAL TROPHY The USS Barb Squash Racquets Perpetual Trophy has been awarded since 1958 with 39 different midshipmen winning the weeklong, roundrobin tournament. Fourteen of the 39 have been multi-year winners, including Tucker George who became the first player in program history to win the trophy all four years (2004-05-06-07). Additionally, three-time winners include All-Americans Spencer Wall (1984-85-86) and Jamie Slough (1992-93-94), along with Andy McCann (2000-01-02) and Andrew McGuinness (2012-14-15). The trophy was established by Medal of Honor recipient Rear Adm. Eugene B. Fluckey, a World War II submarine commander, who patrolled the Pacific Ocean in the USS Barb that sank more tonnage of enemy ships than any U.S. commander. A member of the Naval Academy Class of 1935, Adm. Fluckey died on June 28, 2007, at the age of 93. He was laid to rest at the Naval Academy Columbarium on Aug. 28, 2007. Adm. Fluckey was known as a fearless leader, who once landed some of his crew members on mainland Japan, where they blew up an enemy troop transport train. Another time, he mounted rockets to the deck of his submarine and attacked a Japanese settlement. He made five war patrols in the Pacific Ocean aboard the sub the Barb. Earlier this year, Carl LaVo published “The Galloping Ghost,” a biography of Adm. Fluckey. The book’s title came from a nickname the Japanese had for Adm. Fluckey - the “ghost,” who would show up, wreak havoc and then vanish. Adm. Fluckey was also known for his love and respect for his crew. One such example included using the proceeds from “Thunder Below!”, a book he penned, to take his former crew on a cruise to Alaska, as well as a Mississippi River cruise. In addition to receiving the Medal of Honor, Adm. Fluckey held four Navy Crosses and was considered the most decorated living American at the time of his death. He also served as a leader of NATO in Europe. Assigned to the Naval Academy in the 1950s, Adm. Fluckey helped raise money from private contributors to build Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

THE BOWEN CUP A long-standing tradition at the Naval Academy is its yearly squash competition that features approximately 20 alumni battling the current edition of Navy squash players. In recent years, alumni have been represented as far back as the 50s with Bud Parker (‘55) and Robin Pirie (‘55), picking up their rackets and giving the newcomers a run for their money. A day that is meant to share old memories and create new ones is concluded with the winner of the match having its name etched onto The Bowen Cup. The match is played in memory of its namesake, Vice Adm. Harold G. Bowen Jr., who was a member of the Class of 1933. Prior to the alumni match in 2003, four new courts were dedicated in Halsey Field House, while in 2007 an additional two ASB glass exhibiton courts with spectator seating were erected to complete the 1.3 million dollar Halsey International Squash Courts Complex. The new building, designed just for squash, gives Navy the two best squash courts in the country. Combined with the addition of new air conditioning to the four exisiting courts and the complete renovation of the locker room, the Halsey International Squash Courts Complex gives Navy a six-court facility second to none. Including the additional six international courts in Bancroft Hall, Navy now has 12 courts in use for its varsity, junior varsity, and intramural program, as well as physical education classes. With the additional courts, the Naval Academy was chosen as the host of the 2008 College Squash Association Men’s and Women’s National Individual Championship. The Academy served as gracious hosts of the tournament and showed a great deal of commitment and support for the sport. More than 2,000 members of the Brigade of Midshipmen poured into Halsey Field House to cheer on Tucker George in the opening round of the tournament, setting the CSA’s attendance mark at 2,329.

2017-18 SQUASH

THE COLLEGE SQUASH ASSOCIATION First awarded in 1981, the NISRA Coaches Award is presented annually to that team which has best exemplified the ideals of sportsmanship in squash. Navy, who has won the award more than any other school in the league, has received the award six times — 1985, ‘87, ‘96, ‘98, ‘02 and 2004.   Yale has been the recipient of the award the second-most times, claiming the plaque four times. One of those member coaches who nominated Navy for this prestigious award in 2004 was Pennsylvania head coach Craig Thorpe-Clark. “In particular, Navy had quite a few new players this season and Coach Dawson instilled the same values as in some of the past teams,” said ThorpeClark.   “Those values are synonymous with Navy teams.   Regardless of their talent level in any given season, they play hard and do their very best to win. “It’s easy to be gracious when your winning, but it’s not always easy to have that same attitude when you are on the other side.   I’ve always found Navy’s players to handle themselves the same, win or lose.   That’s a hallmark of Navy.” Not only is the award based upon a team’s attitude and gamesmanship, a unique facet of the game of squash is how the game is officiated.   College squash is the only intercollegiate sport where the players serve as the referees.   Often a player is required to make a call against a teammate.   In a sport where everyone is expected to play by the rules, Navy is considered to be one of the most ethical and fair teams. “Across the board, the Navy players are prepared to call a match properly and fairly,” pointed out Thorpe-Clark. While Thorpe-Clark praised the Midshipmen, he added his respect for Navy head coach Craig Dawson. “Coach Dawson should be commended in the job he has done at Navy,” remarked Thorpe-Clark.   “He is extremely professional with the opposing players and coaches.   I have been a coach for nine years in the United States and I have a great deal of respect for Craig as a friend and mentor.”
