meet honors at both championship meets. Vetere was also a two-time IC4A All-East honoree and qualified for the NCAA’s East Regional Championship. In total in 2012, Navy sent five athletes to the NCAA’s East Regional Championship, with Duncavage, who would go on to place 16th at the NCAA Championship, faring the best with a seventh-place finish. Cooksey was named the Patriot League Indoor Coach of the Year during the 2010-11 season after leading Navy to the indoor team title. The Mids trailed Army by 32 team points with four events remaining (pole vault, 3,000, distance medley relay, 4x400 relay) in the championship. The Mids won the pole vault and the 3,000 and picked up huge points, outscoring Army 30-0 in the two events to enter the final two relays down just 2 points. Navy then won the DMR and Army placed second to set up the final event, the 4x400, which Navy won to take the team crown in a dramatic finish. Cooksey came to Annapolis in 1984 and assisted Al Cantello with both the cross country and the track & field teams at Navy for four seasons before taking over the reins of Navy’s track program. Before coming to Navy, Cooksey spent six years as the head cross country and track & field coach at Ball State, where he began as an assistant in 1974. He was acting head cross country coach for the Cardinals in the 1978-79 season and became the head coach of the cross country and track & field teams in 1979. During his time at Ball State, Cooksey worked with 18 NCAA qualifiers, three All-Americans and an NCAA champion. In 1998, he was named the head coach for the United States World Junior Championship team and has served as a coach on several other U.S. National teams. Most recently, Cooksey served as the head coach of the 2008 U.S. World Indoor Championship team. An associate professor in the physical education department at the Academy, Cooksey was named the recipient of the 2003 Superintendent’s Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for teaching and coaching. His road to becoming one of the top collegiate track coaches began in Terre Haute, Ind., where he was a nationally-ranked high-jumper, two-time captain and team MVP for the Indiana State track program. Cooksey enjoyed a decorated athletic career for the Sycamores, collecting an impressive list of individual accolades, including NCAA All-America and U.S. Track & Field Federation All-America honors. Wesley A. Brown Field House

Built facing the scenic Severn River in 2008, the Wesley A. Brown Field House is a 140,000-square-foot multi-function athletic facility that has served as the home for the Naval Academy’s men’s track & field program. The facility boasts a unique combination of a 76,000-squarefoot retractable Magic Carpet Astroturf system and a Mondo track surface with hydraulically controlled banked curves. The 200meter hydraulic banked track is one of only four of its kind in the United States. It also features dual pole vault/jumping runways and throwing areas. State-of-the-art weight training and sports medicine facilities, as well as equipment storage areas round out this newest crown jewel to the Navy athletics arsenal. The facility is named for the late Lieutenant Commander Wesley A. Brown, CEC, USN, (Ret.), the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy.

I

Brown was born April 3, 1927 in Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., where he was Cadet Corps Regimental Commander during his senior year. Nominated for admission by New York Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Brown entered the Academy in 1945 and graduated in June of 1949. Lt. Cmdr. Brown, a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retired in June 1969 after serving 20 years in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. He holds the Navy Commendation Medal, World War II and Korean War Victory, Korean Service, and American Theater and Antarctic Service Ribbons. Brown passed away in 2012.

2015 NAVY MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

The all-weather MONDO track located northeast of Michelson Hall and Chauvenet Hall is the site of Navy’s outdoor track and field meets. Considered to be one of the premier facilities in the United States, Ingram Field is named in honor of Vice Admiral Jonas H. Ingram, who commanded the U.S. South Atlantic Fleet during World War II. He was also the Naval Academy Director of Athletics from 1925-1930. The track underwent a $1.7 million renovation in the fall of 2001, with new all-weather surfacing placed on the quarter-mile oval and jump areas.

I

Ingram Field

The field area boasts six shot put circles, a discus-throwing circle and a javelin throwing area in the middle of the track. The field has four long/triple jump pits and a “D” zone that allows two high jump areas to be used concurrently. The facility is also equipped with lights and Navy regularly holds ‘twilight’ meets at the facility. Additionally, the facility also features a Daktronics scoreboard, which displays current times and marks during meets.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had more than 93 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 92 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2013-14 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: I The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball APR. I 81 Patriot League teams recorded perfect graduation success rates and 92 earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in APR. I More than 93 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR. I Patriot League teams won NCAA Tournament games in seven different sports, with American winning twice to advance to the Round of 16 in volleyball. I League squads also won NCAA first-round or regional contests in football (Fordham), men’s soccer (Navy), women’s soccer (Boston University), women’s lacrosse (Loyola), softball (Boston University) and baseball (Bucknell). I Navy won the overall Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the second time in three years, while Army took first place on the men’s side and Boston University claimed the women’s title in its inaugural season. I Fifteen student-athletes earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football), Bucknell’s Joe Meyer (Men’s Soccer) and Navy’s Elizabeth Hoerner (Women’s Soccer). I Thirty-five student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. I There were 2,450 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14, including 128 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0. I American women’s basketball standout Alexis Dobbs and Navy women’s soccer star Elizabeth Hoerner and women’s rowing student-athlete Katherine Ashton each earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Dobbs and Hoerner were later named the Patriot League’s nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. I Fordham football and Loyola men and women’s lacrosse each finished in the top 10 of national polls, while Navy men’s soccer and American volleyball and field hockey each placed in the top 25 of their sport’s final national rankings. I Navy’s Jay Stell placed third in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, matching the best-ever finish for a Patriot League male and earning first-team All-America honors. I Navy’s Tom Duvall came in the top 10 in the 500 freestyle at the NCAA Men’s Swimming Championship to earn All-America honors, and was one of four Patriot Leaguers to compete in an individual event at either the NCAA Men or Women’s Championship.
