I I I 2016 NAVY sprint football I I I Major Jeff Polson, USMC

Head Coach, Second Season New Mexico (2002) Major Jeff Polson, USMC was appointed head coach of the Navy sprint football program during the summer of 2015. Polson became the 30th head coach in the program’s history and takes over for Major Kavan Lake, USMC, who went 19-2 with a CSFL championship over his three years as head coach.

In his first season at the helm of the program, Polson led the Mids to a 5-2 record and 4-2 mark in CSFL. In recognition of the team’s strong season where Navy’s two losses came by a combined three points, 16 Mids were named to All-CSFL teams with four earning first team nods. After the completion of the sprint season, Polson led the team to Mexico City for the first-ever goodwill exhibition contest between the United Naval Academy and Heroico Colegio Militar (The Mexican Military Academy). Polson began his Marine Corps career in June 1991 at MCRD Parris Island, S.C. He reported to the 2d Combat Engineer Battalion in Camp Lejeune, N.C. where he was assigned for three years. He moved on to Marine Air Traffic Control Squadron 18 in Okinawa, Japan where he completed a one year unaccompanied tour. At the end of his time in Japan, Polson decided to pursue collegiate education and leave the corps, though he was quickly lured back and applied for the Active Reserve program in December of 1995. Following three years with the I-I Staff, Polson was selected as the first AR Marine for the Marine Corps Enlisted to Officer Program (MECEP). Beginning in 1998, he went to the University of New Mexico as a member of the NROTC unit where he both trained Midshipmen and Marines for Officer Candidate School, as well as worked on his college degree. It was at New Mexico that he suited up for the Lobo football program under the direction of head coach Rocky Long. As a walk-on, Polson earned a backup role as a special teams player and strong safety behind future NFL Pro Bowler and Chicago Bear, Brian Urlacher during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. He graduated New Mexico in May of 2002 with undergraduate degrees in Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Productions and Operations Management. Polson was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer in May 2002. Since earning his commission, he served as the 2d Marine Division Adjutant and Casualty Cell Officer in Charge for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) I and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) I. During OIF II between 2003 and 2004, Polson deployed with Task Force 2/2 to Fallujah, Iraq. During OIF 5, Polson deployed with Marine Wing Support Squadron-373 to Al Taqaddum, Iraq as the Logistics Officer and Headquarters Company Commander. Over the past 10 years, Polson has served in logistics, motor transportation, as an inspecting officer, and operations officer with billets both stateside in the Marine Corps and in the diplomatic security arena overseas. His most recent assignment saw him assume the duties as the Operations Officer for Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (MCESG) in Quantico, Va. where he was responsible for the Marine Security Guard expansion program worldwide as a result of the attacks in Benghazi. Polson has always been actively involved with athletics as he augmented his two years of playing collegiately at New Mexico with a two-year stint as a member of the Langen Knights semiprofessional football team in Langen, Germany during his stay in Europe as an inspection officer in 2010 and 2011.

I I I 2016 NAVY sprint football I I I 2016 Season Preview Coming off a 5-2 season in 2015, the Navy sprint football team has its attention focused squarely on getting back on top of the Collegiate Sprint Football League standings. Two years out from its 36th CSFL championship title in program history in 2014, the Mids will lean on a group of seven returning AllCSFL performers to lead the team on its seven-game 2016 regular season schedule. Second-year head coach Major Jeff Polson, USMC will look to team captains QB Nick Deterding and LB Nick Abramson to provide leadership for the 2016 Midshipmen team both on and off the field. Defense A strength for Navy in 2015, the Mids’ defensive is set to repeat its stout performance from last year when it allowed just 73 points over seven games and 183.6 yards per contest. Senior FS Kendall Mackey leads a defensive backfield that returns three All-CSFL talents. Roaming the middle of the field, Mackey recorded a CSFLhigh six interceptions for 190 return yards and two touchdowns. He’ll be flanked by a pair of honorable mention All-CSFL selections with juniors SS Devin Graves and CB Patrick McMahan. In 2015, Graves made 12 tackles with two interceptions, while McMahan was credited with 11 tackles and two picks. Nick Abramson

Rounding out the perspective starting defensive backfield for the Mids in 2016 will be seniors CB Rex Willis and ROV Drew Dziwulski. Willis, a 2013 honorable mention All-CSFL cornerback, made 13 stops last season in his six appearances and four starts. Dziwulski recorded nine tackles in seven games as a reserve. Abramson and junior Alex Oldham return to the give Navy some high-level experience in its starting linebacker lineup after the graduation of four-year starter Collin Ascherl. Both Abramson and Oldham finished the 2015 season amongst the Mids’ top-eight tacklers as Abramson made 36 stops, while Oldham notched 24. The duo found a great deal of success breaking into the opponents’ backfield as Abramson had 5.0 tackles for loss and one sack and Oldham had 7.5 TFLs and four sacks. Freshman newcomer Ross Otte is slated to start at the third linebacker position after a strong preseason. Along the three-man defensive front line, senior NG Blake Papet will look to continue elevating his play as he’s turned himself into one of the best lineman in the CSFL. Coming into the 2015 season with just 15 combined career tackles over his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Papet registered 30 stops as a junior. In four games, he had five or more tackles on his way to an honorable mention All-CSFL nod. Following the graduation of All-CSFL talents, Hardy Davis and Temple Sloan, juniors DE Luke Coughlin and DE Bryant Schlade are set to serve as bookends on the line surrounding Papet. Coughlin made 25 tackles with 3.0 for a loss in 2015, while Schlade was credited with five tackles and 2.0 behind the line of scrimmage.

Offense Offensively, the athletic playmaking ability of Deterding will play a leading role in the success of a fairly inexperienced starting lineup. The second-year starter at quarterback, Deterding took the wheels to Navy’s offense in 2015 and had a hand in 1,603 total yards to rank second in the CSFL behind the eventual league Co-MVP, Mike McCurdy of Penn. Deterding threw for 1,060 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 543 yards. His rushing total was third best in the CSFL.

Nick Deterding

A newcomer to the game of sprint football, but not Naval Academy football, senior RB Brendon Clements has grabbed hold of the starting running back position after three years of competing with Navy’s NCAA Division I team as a cornerback. Clements is experienced with the running back position dating back to his high school days at Coral Reef High School in Miami. He’ll be tasked with replacing 2014 CSFL MVP and Navy’s all-time rushing leader Eric Wellmon, who recorded 2,263 yards and 28 touchdowns over his storied fouryear career. Junior Mac Lavis will provide Clements with a quality backup as he gained significant playing time in 2015 behind Wellmon. Lavis recorded 207 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 43 carries. Senior HB James Lieto, junior SB Matt Vogel and sophomore TE Dane Livengood are atop the depth charts at their respective positions though the Mids’ starting lineup will likely only see two of the three positions: halfback, slotback and tight end, used at a time depending on the matchup. Lieto is the most experienced of the trio as he has rushed for 323 yards over his first three seasons wearing the blue and gold. Both Vogel and Livengood made their collegiate game debuts in 2015 with Vogel recording 31 all-purpose yards on a combination of rushes and receptions and Livengood netting 48 yards on five catches. First-time starters dot the wide receiver ranks as junior Sam Shaunak and sophomore Miles Whitlow will look to pick up some of the production lost with the graduation of Matthew Hite, Corey Garcia, Glen Harris and Michael Byrne, who combined for 50 catches and 911 yards as seniors in 2015. Senior Alex Blink and freshman Jared Wiltshire will press Shaunak and Whitlow for playing time as Polson’s first designated receivers off the bench. Similar to the receiving and running back ranks, the offensive line for Navy will be dealing with a substantial amount of turnover as the Mids return just two of starting linemen from 2015. Second Team All-CSFL honoree senior C Ross Gilchriest and senior LT Kyle Robb will be leaned on heavily early on as junior LG Jonathan Meier and sophomores RG Reid Kaplan and RT Brian McLaughlin get themselves situated as starting offensive linemen. Meier received quality reps last season as a backup interior lineman, while both Kaplan and McLaughlin found themselves aligned elsewhere on the field for the Mids, Kaplan on the defensive line and McLaughlin as a halfback and tight end. Special Teams On special teams, senior Jules Murphy is slated to take care of placekicking duties after two years as an All-CSFL punter, while sophomore George Skinner will see his first significant action as the team’s first-string punter.
