Kip Simons Head Coach Third Year at Navy Ohio State ‘94

Kip Simons, a decorated head coach at Air Force and Olympic performer, was announced on Sept. 14, 2015 as the new head gymnastics coach at Navy. Simons came to Annapolis after 10 years as the head coach of Air Force. During his second year in Annapolis in 2017, the Mids recreated the magic of 2016 and qualified as a team for the NCAA Championship for the second straight season. Seeded 12th in the field, Navy surpassed that mark and netted 400.65 points in the second session at West Point, N.Y. to finish 11th overall at the meet, edging California by 0.4 points. A pair of championship final qualifiers in Jonny Tang (AA) and Lucas Beltran (FX, V) led the Mids to the highest finish in program history at the national competition. While competing at the 2017 USAG and ECAC Championships, Navy gymnasts secured five individual event titles: Jonny Tang (ECAC - AA, FX), Tanner West (ECAC - PB), Lucas Beltran (USAG - V) and Ben Provost (USAG - HB). For their work outside the gym, the Mids had nine gymnasts garner CGA AllAmerica Scholar-Athlete honors in 2017 for GPAs above 3.2. As a team, Navy ranked seventh in the nation with a cumulative GPA of 3.21. The program also earned 2017 Academic Progress Rate (APR) public recognition from the NCAA. Simons was recognized for the Mids’ success as the 2017 CGA East Regional Coach of the Year. In his first season as the Mids’ head coach in 2016, the team incurred new levels of success both in and out of the gym. Simons and Navy captured the program’s first ECAC Championship since 1989 with a score of 423.4 to tie with Army West Point for the title. A program-record 424.1 score at the All-Academy Championship helped the team earn the league’s automatic qualifying spot for the NCAA Championship and break the tie for ECAC supremacy. The Mids’ spot as a team at the NCAA Championship was just the second ever in program history and first since 2009. In the national meet in Columbus, Ohio, Navy competed in the first team session and recorded a 410.1 score. Three individuals from the team advanced to the events finals: Jonny Tang (AA), Connor Gonzales (R) and Eric Poletti (R). Prior to the NCAAs, Simons saw his squad earn 15 All-ECAC honors for topsix performances at the ECAC Championship with Mitchell Larios (V and PB), Eric Morrison (PH) and Gonzales (R) taking home event titles. In the regular season, the Mids defeated the Black Knights of Army in the annual Star Meet, 419.3-413.75. In the classroom, Connor Westrick was selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team honoree, in addition to 10 other Mids earning CGA All-America Scholar-Athletes nods for posting GPAs above 3.2. As a team, Navy ranked fifth in the nation in with a team grade point average of 3.355. For his team’s success in 2016, Simons was recognized as the CGA East Regional Coach of the Year, as well as the ECAC Men’s Gymnastics CoCoach of the Year.

An internationally renown gymnast since 1988, Simons was a four-year member of the United States Senior National team and competed on two world championship teams, as well as with the gold medal winning teams at the 1994 Goodwill Games and 1995 Pan-American Games. His competitive career culminated with a spot on the 1996 United States Olympic team. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Simons was a member of the U.S. team that finished fifth overall. After retiring from international competition, Simons moved into collegiate coaching at the University of California in 2001. In five seasons from 2001 to 2005, the Bears twice finished in third place at the NCAA Championships and had four individuals win national championships. Simons was named Associate Head Coach of the Bears for his final season in Berkeley. Beginning with the 2005-06 season, Simons started a 10-year reign in charge of the gymnastics program at the United States Air Force Academy. A five-time USAG Varsity Head Coach of the Year, the Falcons thrived under his leadership and expertise. In both 2012 and 2014, Air Force earned rankings as high as eighth nationally. Simons took a team to the NCAA National Qualifying Meet and saw 15 gymnasts advance into the NCAA Championships in each of his final five years in Colorado Springs. On three occasions under his tutelage Falcon athletes earned NCAA All-American nods, Greg Stine twice in 2008 (all-around and rings) and Tim Wang in 2014 (pommel horse). In USAG National Championship competition, Simons and Air Force won six straight team titles from 2010 through 2015 and collected 28 individual event titles. Amongst the service academies, the Falcons won each of the last six meetings at the annual All-Academy Championship Meet between Air Force, Army and Navy. In recognition of his team’s success Simons has been the recipient of four CGA Collegiate Division National Head Coach of the Year awards (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013), as well as two NCAA Regional Head Coach of the Year (2008, 2010) and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year (2006, 2014) honors, respectively. A 1994 graduate from Ohio State University, Simons earned numerous honors throughout his four years with the Buckeyes, including Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the Nissen-Emery Award, as the nation’s top senior gymnast. He was a four-year member of the All-Big 10 and earned conference titles on the parallel bars (1992, 1994), still rings (1992) and high bar (1993). Simons garnered two NCAA All-America certificates during his time in Columbus. In September 2006, the Varsity “O” Association inducted him into Ohio State’s Athletic Hall of Fame. For his work and success throughout the sport, Simons was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in the summer of 2010. He was joined in the 2010 induction class by 1996 Olympic team gold medalist Dominique Moceanu, 1992 Olympic team bronze medalist Wendy Bruce-Martin, 2000 Olympian Jennifer Parilla, two-time U.S. Men’s Olympic team head coach Kevin Mazeika and 2000 U.S. Olympic trampoline coach Robert Null.

Craig Holt Assistant Coach 19th Year at Navy Syracuse ‘95

Craig Holt enters his 19th season with the Navy program. After 16 years as an assistant coach with Dr. Sho Fukushima through 2015, he stayed on staff under the leadership for new head coach Kip Simons. Holt brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in the sport of gymnastics as both a former athlete and assistant coach. The recipient of the 2017 CGA East Regional and ECAC Men’s Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year awards, Holt and the Mids had another standout campaign during the 2017 season. Navy qualified for and competed as a team at the NCAA Championship for the second straight year and came away with a program-best 11th place finish to surpass the team from Cal in the standings. Individual highlights from 2017 include five event titles at the ECAC and USAG Championship from a total of four different gymnasts. Academically, nine Mids were honored by the CGA in their scholar-athlete recognition program in 2017. 2016 was a banner year for Holt and the Navy program as the team captured the ECAC Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. Navy’s ECAC crown was its first since 1989, while a team appearance in the NCAAs had only occured once prior back in 2009. Three Mids advanced from the team qualifying meet to the events finals of the NCAA Championships, Jonny Tang (all-around), Connor Gonzales (rings) and Eric Poletti (rings). In addition to their success at the national meet, Navy accrued 15 All-ECAC honorees at the ECAC Championship. For the team’s stellar performance during the season, Holt was recognized as the CGA East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year, as well as the ECAC Men’s Gymnastics Co-Assistant Coach of the Year.

In addition, the Mids won their second-straight All-Academy Championship, placed second at the ECAC Championship and advanced as a team to the NCAA Qualifying Meet for the first time in program history. His efforts in the gym have not gone unrecognized, as he has been named the NCAA East Region Assistant Coach of the Year (2007), USAG Collegiate Division Assistant Coach of the Year (2008, 2006), ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year (2017, 2016-Co, 2011, 2007 and 2003) and CGA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year (2017, 2016, 2007-Co). During the summer of 2005, Holt coached the United States team in the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Holt guided the United States to a second-place team finish with gold medal performances in the floor exercise and pommel horse. In addition to his coaching duties, Holt also served as a judge at the Maccabiah Games. Holt came to the Academy after serving as an assistant coach for one season at William & Mary and two years at his alma mater, Syracuse. “I would like all of our athletes to leave the Naval Academy knowing that they have the tools to not only meet, but exceed all that is expected of them,” he added. “They should have a strong sense of confidence and accomplishment as they begin their careers.” As a gymnast, Holt was an NCAA finalist on the rings in 1994. He is a 1995 graduate of Syracuse, where he earned a degree in physical education. Holt earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Syracuse in the summer of 2002.

During 2013-15 seasons, Holt has helped three athletes qualify for and compete in the NCAA Championships. In April of 2015 at the University of Oklahoma, Jonny Tang was an entrant in the all-around competition, while Mitchell Larios took on the nation’s best on the vault. In 2013, Chris Junghans finished 12th overall in the all-around competition and just missed placing in the top 10 by 0.4 points. Prior to Junghans, Holt helped coach Andrew Faulk to his spectacular 2012 senior campaign, which included a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In 2011, Holt was named ECAC Tri-Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped guide Dylan Parrott and Andrew Faulk to the NCAA Championships. In 2009, Holt assisted in helping the Midshipmen to a memorable season, as they finished with an impressive 15-4 record and a N-Star victory at Army.

Colin Payne Assistant Coach First Year at Navy Oklahoma ‘17

Payne joined the Naval Academy program in September of 2017 after years of success in the youth ranks, including his most recent stop at the noted Bart Connor Gymnastics Academy. “I am extremely excited to announce the addition of Colin Payne to our coaching staff and the Navy Gymnastics Family,” remarked head coach Kip Simons. “Colin has been around the program for just brief time and he has made an immediate impact on our student athletes. Colin brings passion and has a well-trained technical eye for the development of gymnasts.” A member of the coaching staff at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy for over five years beginning in July 2012, Payne had a first-hand role in the growth and maturation of numerous future and current NCAA gymnasts. Above and beyond DI athletes, Payne coached Jordan Kovach, a member of the United States Junior National Team, while Kovach was at BCGA.

“I am very excited to be joining the Navy gymnastics coaching staff,” said Payne. “I feel fortunate to be working alongside such seasoned and knowledgeable coaches as Kip Simons and Craig Holt. I am extremely eager to share my passion for the sport with the dedicated and talented athletes at the Naval Academy. I am also equally excited about the opportunity to help mentor and develop midshipmen through the physical mission of the Naval Academy as a Professor of the Physical Disciplines.” A native of Hendersonville, Tenn., Payne is a 2017 graduate from the University of Oklahoma. Payne earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology.

Prior to coaching in Oklahoma, Payne worked at the Harpeth School of Gymnastics near Nashville, Tennessee during the 2011-12 school year.

2018 gymnastics SEASON PREVIEW The 2018 season will get kicked off for the Navy gymnastics program on January 12 at the annual West Point Open. The two-day event at Army’s Christl Arena will be the first of nine regular season meets for Navy. Following postseason championship competitions for the USAG and ECAC, the Mids will aim to qualify for its third straight NCAA Championship berth in April. “I see 22 guys that are ready to get the season going,” remarked head coach Kip Simons. “We’ve been at this since day one of classes and at some point you have got to get out there and go. They’re ready. It’s been a long preseason, a great preseason and the buy-in has been phenomenal. There’s an interesting dynamic to the team with 16 of 22 guys being plebes or youngsters so they’re very green so to speak, but the only way to get seasoned is to go out there, raise your hand and represent Navy Gymnastics!” Returners While adding eight freshmen newcomers to the program, the 2018 team will lean heavily on returning veterans to help with the learning curve of collegiate gymnastics. Of those 14 returners, Navy’s team this season consists of three seniors, three juniors and eight sophomores. Prior to the start of the preseason, senior Noah Beeman was selected by his teammates to serve as the captain. An all-around competitor, who appeared in all 13 of Navy’s matches and finished on the podium of the all-around events of both the USAG and ECAC Championships in 2017, Beeman will be assisted in his leadership by fellow seniors Vadim Ivanov and Andy Jones. In 2017, Ivanov stepped into the Mids’ starting lineup as a regular on the parallel bars and closed his junior campaign with strong performances in both postseason championship events, including a fifth-place finish at the USAG Championships. short due to injury after just three meets. Jones has the potential to post scores for Navy in floor, vault and high bar events. The Mids’ junior class will be led in 2018 by a returning Christian Correale. Sidelined for the majority of his sophomore season after suffering an injury, Correale will look to get back to putting together high quality results on the rings and parallel bars. As a freshman in 2016, Correale qualified for and competed in the event finals of both apparatuses at the ECAC Championship. Mark Pickar and Mitchell Fornek make up the rest of Navy’s junior class. After two years of working alongside the team as a student manager, Pickar looks to make his collegiate debut in 2018, while Fornek was injured in the preseason and is slated to miss his junior season. “Our juniors and seniors are the type of guys that are going to go out and get the job done,” remarked Simons. “We don’t have a ton of upperclassmen, as we have just six and one is out with an injury. Out of those two classes, we’re looking at eight or nine routines out of 36, but those are the type of routines that when they raise their hand you can pretty much pencil in a hit. They’re going to do whatever it takes to get the job done and hit those routines. They understand what it means to compete as a team and do it for their brothers standing alongside of them.”

2018 gymnastics SEASON PREVIEW Navy’s eight-man sophomore class will be counted on heavily to continue their growth in collegiate action. Thrown into the proverbial fire as freshmen in 2017, the Mids received strong efforts meet-in and meet-out from numerous first-year gymnasts, in fact, six of the eight Mids qualified for event finals and/or earned top-six results in the two postseason championships. The duo of Lucas Beltran and Tanner West lead the talented group of sophomores as Beltran won the 2017 ECAC Championship in the vault and qualified for the NCAA Championship meet in both the floor exercise and vault, while West won the 2017 ECAC Championship on the parallel bars and finished second on the rings. Frank Bradley, Trevor North, Ryan Orce and Ben Provost round out the group of Mids, who either attained championship hardware or were in event finals last spring. Bradley, a four-event performer, made the event finals at the USAGs on the floor and rings before finishing in sixth place on the vault at the ECACs. North spent the majority of his time in 2017 focusing on the pommel horse and that paid off with a sixth-place result at the USAGs. Orce, a pommel horse and parallel bars specialist, made the event finals of the USAGs on the pommel horse before netting a second-place finish on the same apparatus at the ECAC Championship. After a quiet start to the regular season, Provost picked up his level of performance down the stretch and won the USAG Championship on the high bar. Will Longwe and Cian McConnell also were contributors for the Mids in 2017. Longwe specialized in the high bar for Navy and competed in nine of the team’s 13 meets. The Massachusetts native registered a season-high 13.5 score in his homecoming meet at Springfield in March. McConnell appeared in one meet for Navy last season and turned in a 13.25-point vault at Air Force. Newcomers Continuing to re-build the program’s depth, the coaching staff brought in eight talented freshmen gymnasts, who will look to debut on the collegiate scene this season. This year’s class of plebes come from Massachusetts with Jake Carlson and Taylor Gigandet, Virginia with Travis Keller and Collin DiPietro, California with Ryan McVay, New York with Max Gerber, Ohio with David Toussaint and Pennsylvania with Jason Kushy.

As the team breaks from its preseason workouts, Simons envisions half of that eight-man class competing in the starting lineup in the opening meet this Friday. McVay is set for all-around action, while Toussaint will ply his craft on the floor, pommel horse and parallel bars. Carlson and Keller are slightly more specialized with Carlson readying himself to compete on the pommel horse and rings and Keller on the vault. Schedule The Mids are set to test themselves with an action-packed and difficult regular season slate. During the regular season, the team will compete in meets on every weekend from January 12 through March 4, minus a bye for the invite-only national Winter Cup competition during February 16-18. Three important dual meets highlight Navy’s schedule with the 2018 Star Meet versus Army coming at home on February 3. Three weeks after the Star Meet, Navy travels to the reigning threetime NCAA champion, the University of Oklahoma on February 24. A Senior Day showdown with Michigan on March 17 closes the Mids’ regular season schedule. A trio of postseason championship meets will culminate the 2018 schedule for Navy with the USAG Collegiate Championship at Air Force on March 30-31, the ECAC Championship at home in Annapolis on April 7 and the NCAA Championship in Chicago on April 20-21. “Strength of schedule is a big deal this year,” said Simons. “We have really upped our game there. If we want to take our program into a top-10 level you’ve got to see the top programs out there and so we have the University of Michigan at home and we’ll also be going to the number one team in the country, the University of Oklahoma. Of course, the Army Star Meet at home on February 3 is circled. For us that’s going to be the pinnacle of the early season and we have to come away with a victory.”

2018 gymnastics 2017 YEAR-IN-REVIEW *Navy repeated as a team entrant in the NCAA Championships as the program garnered a bid with the 12th-best national qualifying average of 402.838. 2017 was the first year the ECAC did not have an automatic bid for its conference champion as the league fell below the six-member threshold so the 12th-highest NQA earned a spot in the NCAAs.

*At the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, the team finished in third place in the varsity division with 379.7 points. They were fifth overall in the field of eight.

*The NCAA bid was the third in program history (2009, 2016 and 2017) *At NCAA Championships in West Point, N.Y. at Army, Navy finished in fifth place in session two edging out California, 400.65 to 400.25. Overall, that ranked the Mids 11th out of 12 teams at the Qualifying Meet; the highest standing in Navy history at an NCAA Championship competition. *MIDN 1/C Jonny Tang ranked first overall in the second session in the allaround with 82.15 points, while MIDN 2/C Noah Beeman ranked sixth in the all-around at 79.3. *Tang and MIDN 4/C Lucas Beltran advanced from the team event into the individual finals of the NCAA Championship. Tang finished 11th in the all-around with 81.75 points. Tang’s ninth-place result on the floor exercise (14.35 points, 0.1 out of fifth) was his top event of six. Beltran finished 22nd (14.0) on the floor exercise and 40th (13.45) on the vault.

*Individually, six Midshipmen qualified for seven spots in the event finals and came away with USAG All-America honors in five cases. Beltran (vault) and MIDN 4/C Ben Provost (high bar) were champions at their respective events. *In addition to the two event titles, MIDN 4/C Trevor North on the pommel horse and MIDN 2/C Vadim Ivanov on the parallel bars and Beeman in the all-around, ranked in the top-six to give Navy five podium finishes in total. *Scored a team-high 409.4 versus William & Mary in home meet on January 28; with an adjusted scoring system that was new for 2017, Navy reached the 400-point threshold in five instances.

*At the championship award banquet, head coach Kip Simons was awarded the CGA East Regional Coach of the Year honor, while assistant coaches Craig Holt and Charlie Tamayo were selected as the CGA East Regional Assistant Coaches of the Year. *Program earned 2017 Academic Progress Rate (APR) public recognition. *Team finished second at the 2017 ECAC Championship meet in Chicago with 402.55 points. William & Mary charged late and overtook Navy with a final score of 404.7. *Tang and MIDN 4/C Tanner West combined to win three ECAC individual titles. Tang won the floor exercise (14.1) and tied for the all-around championship with an 80.9 score. West was the top performer on the parallel bars with a dominant 14.4 score that cleared the field by 0.35 points. *Overall, Navy gymnasts were on the podium as a top-six finisher a total of 11 times at the meet and earned All-ECAC honors: Tang (all-around, floor exercise, parallel bars, high bar), West (parallel bars, rings) MIDN 1/C Wyatt LaPointe (rings), Beeman (high bar, all-around), MIDN 4/C Frank Bradley (vault) and MIDN 4/C Ryan Orce (pommel horse). *At the conclusion of the ECAC meet, Holt was named the ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year, while Beeman was recognized as the ECAC’s Most Improved Gymnast.

2018 gymnastics ACADEMIC SUCCESS Nine Midshipmen Earn 2017 All-America Scholar-Athlete Accolades Following the 2017 season, the College Gymnastics Association announced its national academic teams as well as its All-America ScholarAthletes. As a team, Navy ranked seventh in the nation with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.210, while nine individual Midshipmen were amongst the 151 national student-athletes recognized as All-American Scholar-Athletes. May graduates Wyatt LaPointe and Jonny Tang, rising seniors Vadim Ivanov and Andy Jones, rising junior Christian Correale and rising sophomores Frank Bradley, Cian McConnell, Ryan Orce and Ben Provost all received accolades for posting GPAs above 3.2 for the 2016-17 school year. LaPointe (history-honors), Correale (mathematics), Provost (mathematics), Jones (applied mathematics), McConnell (aerospace engineering) and Ivanov (applied mathematics) garnered first-team status for their respective GPAs of 3.5 or higher. Orce (mathematics), Bradley (physics) and Tang (cyber operations) earned All-American Scholar-Athlete Second Team honors for their GPAs between 3.2 and 3.49. LaPointe, the team captain for the 2016-17 season, highlighted Navy’s effort in the classroom as he was one of seven national gymnasts with a perfect 4.0 GPA during the school year, as well as one of five graduates to have earned first-team Academic All-American Scholar-Athlete honors all four years of their eligibility. He’s joined in that exclusive list by William & Mary’s Neal Courter, Aria Sabbagh and Mat Turnansky, and Illinois’ Joey Peters.

All-Time Academic All-Americans The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has been selecting the nation’s pre-eminent Academic All-American team for over one-half of a century. Criteria for the award consists of a student-athlete be at least a sophomore, earn a varsity letter in their sport and have attained a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (changed from 3.20 for the 2008-09 academic year). Nominees are first voted on by district, then all first-team all-district winners are placed onto a national ballot from which the Academic All-America teams are selected.
