2017 WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Karen Boyle Head Coach • 31st Season 31st season at Navy Bowling Green ‘79
Boyle is in her 31st year at the helm of the Navy women’s cross country team, she has led the Mids to four Patriot League Championships in the last 10 seasons. The Mids posted a 6-1 record in 2016, including a sixthstraight win over Army. In 30 years as Navy’s head coach, Boyle has guided her teams to a 152-22 (.874) record. In 2016, Boyle and the Mids collected their sixth-straight victory over Army for an N-Star with dominant 20-42 decision in Annapolis. The 22-point win was the largest in the meet since 2008 (15-48, Navy). In the postseason, Navy finished fourth in the Patriot League Championship. Continuing its dominance over Army, Boyle guided Navy to its fifth-straight N-Star victory over the Black Knights, 23-35, in West Point during the 2015 season. The Mids followed up with a strong performance in the Patriot League Championship, finishing as the runner ups to Bucknell. During Boyle’s tenure, seven Navy runners have competed at the NCAA Division I Championship. Boyle’s first national championship qualifier came in 1992 with Kerry O’Neill, followed by Jackie Hayes (1995), Rebecca Cline (1997), Melissa Foon (2000), Amy Watson (2008), Palacio (2011) and Beveridge (2012). Boyle led Navy to its fourth consecutive victory over archrival Army, 26-29, in 2014. The Mids placed fourth in the Patriot League Championship. Navy finished first in three meets in 2013 season, including again winning annual Salty Dog Invitational. After defeating Army, 24-31, the Mids fell short of their third consecutive Patriot League title, finishing third. For the second consecutive year in 2012, a Mid claimed the league’s individual crown as Annie-Norah Beveridge took first place overall. Like Patriot League champion Jess Palacio in 2011, Beveridge also went on to earn All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors and receive a bid to compete in the NCAA Championships. In 2011 Jess Palacio had one of the best years ever by a Navy cross country runner. She placed first in four meets, including at the Patriot League Championship, and earned her second consecutive All-Mid Atlantic Region honor. Boyle guided the Mids to a pair of invitational titles in 2010 as Navy finished first at both the Lehigh Invitational and the Great American Festival. Palacio won four individual titles in the fall of `10 and became a first-team All-Patriot League honoree by placing third at the conference championship. In 2007, Boyle led Navy to a share of its first Patriot League championship, before claiming the title outright in 2008. Boyle was named Patriot League Coach of the Year on both occasions. Boyle has led the Mids to significant honors on both the Division II (1987-1990) and Division I (1991-present) levels. In Navy’s lastfour years of Division II competition, Boyle coached the Mids to three-straight undefeated seasons and fourconsecutive top-five finishes in the NCAA Division II Championship, with five runners garnering All-America honors. Boyle was named Eastern Region Coach of the Year in three-straight seasons (1988-90). Boyle guided the program into the Division I ranks in 1991, and the Mids immediately achieved success by capturing the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. In 1997 and 2007, Boyle was named Navy’s Fall Coach of the Year after she led Navy to an undefeated season. As a coach with the track team, she guided Marty Shue to a title in the indoor 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Championship. In 1995, Boyle was selected as team leader for the USA Ekiden International Marathon in Beijing, China. She was also selected to help rewrite the level I track & field certification curriculum at the USA Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1999, she received her C.S.C.S. certification as a nationally accredited certified strength and conditioning specialist. The summer of 2001 saw Boyle serve as an assistant track & field coach for Team USA in the Deaf Track & Field World Games, held in Rome, Italy. Boyle, a 1979 graduate of Bowling Green, received her degree in physical education a nd earned her master’s degree in athletic administration and recreation from her alma mater in 1982. Athletically, she competed in both track and lacrosse, specializing in the 400 and 4x400-meter relay on the track and was a leading scorer for the Falcons’ lacrosse squad. Her coaching career began at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where she coached the women’s cross country and track & field teams from 1984-86, developing two national champions and nine All-Americans. Boyle is a tenured professor in the Naval Academy’s Physical Education Department, teaching personal conditioning, rock climbing, kayaking and triathlon training. Administratively, Boyle served as the president of the NCAA Division I Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association (1999-2001), as well as a committee member on the USA Track & Field Coaching Education Board and the United States Track Coaches Association Long Distance Advisory Board.

Season Outlook
2017 WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
A year after going 6-1 in the regular season with a win over Army and a 5-1 result at the Mount St. Mary’s 5k Duals, the Mids, under the direction of 31st year head coach Karen Boyle, are looking to improve on their Patriot League outcome that saw the team finish fourth overall in 2016. A strong quintet of returning athletes should spearhead that goal. “This year’s team has great depth and brings back a host of awesome returning athletes,” remarked Boyle. “We had a very tough few weeks of tryouts to set up our top-10, which highlights the depth that we have across the roster. Having Claire Ostrowski join us after strong performances in distance events for track & field is a huge get for the program. We’ve got our eye on challenging for the Patriot League Championship and leaving our mark in the top-tier of the league.” From last year’s Patriot League Championship seven-person lineup, junior Erin McDonnell is the top returner. An All-Patriot League First Team honoree in 2015, McDonnell finished 20th overall last October as the leader of a tight group of Midshipmen runners. All seven of Navy’s 2016 lineup finished between 20th and 33rd at the event. Including the Patriot League meet, McDonnell was Navy’s top finisher in four of its six contests. Sophomores Grace West (23rd at PL) and Caitlin Schmitt (24th at PL) return after top-25 results in last fall’s championship. West concluded her freshman season on the uptick with the second-best time for Navy at the Patriot League Championships and a season-best personal time two weeks later at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Schmitt was solid throughout the year for Navy with four top-five finishes over six events. Senior Allison Parks (26th at PL) rivaled McDonnell for the Mids’ top placement meet-in, meet-out as she was the highest finishing Mids at the Mount St. Mary’s 5K
Duals and Salty Dog Invitational, while ranking second at the Army-Navy Star Meet and third at the Roy Griak Invite and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Junior Ali Valenti (30th at PL) is the fifth top-level returner for Navy in 2017 as she competed in all six races last fall and was amongst the top-six Mids in four of those events. Coach Boyle is excited about the prospects of augmenting those five Patriot League Championship starters with the likes of senior captain Evelyn Jansen, sophomores Claire Ostrowski and Kara Kakascik, as well as a deep freshmen class led by Emily Craig and Lilly Myers. Running in events over each of her first three years, including the Army-Navy and Patriot League Championship meets in 2016, Jansen will be leaned on to provide leadership both in and out of competition for Navy in 2017. Ostrowski is expected to rocket towards the top of Navy’s lineup after a stellar freshmen campaign in distance events for the Mids’ indoor and outdoor track team. In spring competitions, she finished third in the 5,000-meter race at the Patriot League Championship before coming back at the ECAC Championship and running the second fastest 5K time in program history. Karascik, a fellow sophomore, raced twice in cross country events and 2016 and ranked fourth in the Mids’ lineup at the Paul Short Run last fall. Craig and Myers have stood out so far during the preseason and have the potential to be top-five scoring threats for Navy as freshmen. Craig from nearby Reistertown, Md. was a multiple time honoree on the All-Metro teams for the Baltimore region between 2014-16, while Myers, a native of Erie, Pa., was the District 10 and Region 5 Runner of the Year during the 2016-17 school year.

2017 WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Patriot League
H Navy women’s lacrosse became the fourth Patriot League team in any sport to advance to the semifinals of an NCAA Championship as the Mids defeated No. 7 Penn, UMass and No. 2 North Carolina in their tournament play.
Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army West Point, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its studentathletes to be leaders in society. During the 2016-17 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: H 97 Patriot League teams (45.8 percent of League teams) earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with a Patriot League record 84 squads earning perfect scores. H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, and tied for the national lead with the Ivy League for the highest percentage of teams earning the honor at 45.8%. H The League’s 93 percent graduation success rate (GSR) is the best mark in the nation for the second-consecutive year. Nine schools were at 90 percent or higher. All 10 member institutions exceeded the national GSR of 86 percent. In addition the League’s 86 percent Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) places it as the national leader for the fourth-consecutive year. H American’s Natalie Konerth (Field Hockey) and Navy’s Ryan Bailey (Men’s Swimming) were named the Corvias Patriot League Female and Male ScholarAthlete of the Year honorees, respectively. H 11 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Bucknell’s Luke Giugliano (Men’s Track & Field) and Kendall Ham (Women’s Soccer) Lehigh’s Micah Tennant (Football), Navy’s Ryan Bailey (Men’s Swimming) and Ryan Speir (Men’s Cross Country) H Two Patriot League student-athletes earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, including Navy’s Bailey and Nate Gainey (men’s track and field) and two earned Fulbright Scholarships, including American’s Shannon Scovel (Women’s Swimming) and Holy Cross’s Samantha Speroni (Women’s Track and Field) H 43 Patriot League student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict recognition. H There were a Patriot League record 2,899 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2016-17. H Holy Cross’s Anthony Critelli (Baseball) won the Senior CLASS Award for baseball and was one of five Patriot League finalists for the award, along with Bucknell’s Brett Smith (Baseball), Lehigh’s Tim Kempton (Men’s Basketball) and Justin Worley (Men’s Soccer) and Navy’s Adrian Chinnery (Baseball), H Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the fourth straight time and fifth in the last six years.
