Problem-solving skills are also enhanced through group decisions made with staff guidance and the daily challenges and logistics that are present with being part of a traveling group. The students also help to monitor the budget for each specific trip. It is part of the overall experience to shop for food, cook, clean dishes, wash clothes, and care for the group’s equipment. Unique training in outdoor rescue, such as vertical and swift water rescue and other outdoor challenges, also aids in developing strong skills in leadership and problem solving. All outdoor and rescue instruction is taught by certified and highly skilled instructors. When traveling, the group stays in a variety of locations, ranging from youth hostels, hotels, churches, or an occasional campground, or spends a few nights in a lodge or private home. For example, when a group travels to the Philippines, the students stay in local homes and schools. Each year, the itinerary changes to offer new experiences for returning students. The Learning As a result of our low student-to-teacher ratio, each student receives individual attention. Academic instructors facilitate learning in traditional and non-traditional environments. Students attend classes with the California Academy students. Classes are interactive, rather than solely lecture based, involving and challenging each student during the learning process. Regardless of prior academic achievement levels, high academic expectations can be realized because of the unique nature of this program.
Competitive Option Snowboarding and social activities are always conditional
What type of students are accepted at SUSA? Students who are interested in improving their snowboarding skills. Just as there are different kinds of snowboarders, there are different kinds of learners. Because of our individual approach, SUSA can meet the needs of high academic achievers as well as those who have struggled through academics in larger, more traditional schools.
What is the average class size? Average of eight students. Usually, there are no more than eleven students in a class, depending upon the course. This allows each student the time and attention they deserve with the teacher.

• The school year is measured in blocks (quarters). A minimum of 3 academic/vocational courses are studied each block. • Five credits can be earned by successfully completing a course during a block. • All courses (with the exception of Geography, Health, Economics and US Government) are 2 block courses. • Vocational courses are offered each block at the California Academy. • The College Preparatory curriculum satisfies the requirements of the University of California and other colleges and universities. Please note that most state universities will not accept “D” grades. Students wishing to attend a state university must also fulfill specific elective requirements. The standard curriculum will meet entrance requirements for most two-year colleges. • Physical Education credit is gained through regular participation in athletic activities on weekends, after school, and during weekday evenings. * Students following the standard curriculum need 10 credits in either a foreign language or fine/visual arts.

leadership skills while working ahead in school are well-suited for this program. Students experiencing academic difficulty and those with learning differences, attention deficit and time management issues may also benefit from our experiential approach.
"The value of the Lassen program is that a unique combination exists between academics and wilderness adventures. While blending a hands-on approach to learning, the students develop leadership skills, along with a life-long appreciation of nature. This is one of the most commendable summer school programs available." -Jill Mahoney, parent, 2004

social dynamics of mixed genders.
Girls on the Go is designed for girls in grades 7-12 who want to test themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is ideal for students who are generally motivated, demonstrate appropriate behavior, and want to improve their leadership skills. Students who are experiencing academic difficulty and those with learning differences, attention deficit and time management issues may also benefit from our experiential approach. A willingness to learn new skills and expand physical and mental limits is essential. One of the goals of the group is to explore some of the issues and concerns that affect girls in our global community. Courses are taught thematically. For example, students will learn about the contributions that women have made in the student's chosen area of study.

with learning differences, attention deficit and time management issues, and those who need to develop greater social skills, maturity and responsibility. Students who need to make up units, improve study habits, are testing limits in the home, or demonstrating mild impulsive behavior are also well-suited for this program. Students wishing to challenge themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally in a four or eight-week summer experience may benefit from our experiential approach.
Backpacking through the beautiful Trinity Alps.
"My son’s four-week summer experience gave him a totally different perspective — he is no longer challenging everything. Instead, he accepts his learning difference and is applying himself in the classroom.” Kim Alsop, parent, 2004 “I attended Nawa Academy for two full years, and I had so much fun. The opportunities and support were endless. Nawa Academy is a family to me now.” Lyn Sprinkle, Alumna, 1996

Trinity Challenge Self Development Tu t o r i a l P r o g r a m Year after year, the Trinity
Challenge has proven to be
an extraordinary summer camping experience for coed youth, ages 10 to 14. Unlike our summer school programs, where academic credit can be earned, the Trinity Challenge focuses on outdoor and teambuilding activities and offers a basic tutorial approach for students needing assistance with reading comprehension and fluency. In a four-week session,

students are eligible to earn up to five units for Physical Education (P.E.). Adolescents with low self-esteem, who are lacking in confidence, may be testing limits in the home, or demonstrating mild impulsive behavior and inadequate social skills may be well-suited for this individualized program. The Trinity Challenge provides an opportunity where young people can mature in a fun and challenging camp atmosphere. One parent from Chico, California had this to say,
"Nawa helped my son appreciate what he had, rather than focus on what he didn't. He is more self-assured and self-disciplined."
