The Proyect: A new high end tools brand was created to be included as a new Truper Brand and under the name of these, we have developed a tool design.
USER PERSONA
Román 40-50 years old Husband and Father
He is the one who makes the reparations in house and has made some of the pieces of furniture they use. The shed that is used to store his tools is a mess. He never reads the instruction manuals, so all he does is based on his experience.
INVESTIGATION Part 1
In the first hands-on investigation, different activities took place in order to evaluate the performance of some of the most conventional tools.
INSIGTHS
The manual riveter was the most complicated tool that was used
It took the intervention of two people to achieve its goal
Using it involves applying a lot of strength in an uncomfortable way
RIVET GUN/ RIVET Functionality
INVESTIGATION Part 2
In this second investigation, the functioning of the manual riveter was deeply analyzed. 3 people using a manual riveter were observed while they performed their activities in their own workshops.
INSIGTHS
Although it is designed to be used with only one hand, its dimensions and required strength to use a riveter are inadequate
To be used with different rivets sizes, it is necessary to change the nozzle using a wrench, making it likely to lose any piece
It has a confusing and intimidating language
INVESTIGATION Part 3
Market research and analysis on Truper family brands and other tool brands

ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSIONS Stage 1 While building the brand, not only were the 3 main concepts considered, as several other tools brands, in addition to the current Truper brands, were also taken into account. This elements played an important role in the conception of the brand name and in the selection of the color palette. It was necessary to look back at this first stage to better develop the design of the tool in the following phases. As well, the second investigation was held with people who covered the profile of the conceived user persona, so that we had a clearer view of the problem and better tools to support the design intended to solve the identify necessities.

POINTERS Adjustable parts, such as the turnable nuzzle for the different sized rivets and the button that blocks the movement of the arm, are specifically shaped and highlighted in orange to indicate that interaction is required.
COMFORT The three main parts are movable for a compact storage. Adjustable arms placed in parallel planes allow a higher mobility range. At the same time, the handles are plastic covered to maximize grip.

ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSIONS Thanks to the investigation and conceptualization phases, we gain a clear perspective of what we wanted to achieve with our design. These defined the direction of the project, as we frequently recapped which were the needs to be solved and asked ourselves if the decisions taken were aligned with what was first stablished. Regarding the developed design, in can be noted that the improvement in the sequence of usage is the most relevant factor of the design proposal. Thus, several details were taken into account to simplify it and to efficiently communicate it. It should be pointed out that the proposed mechanism is just an initial approach, meaning it may not be completely working. Instead, it should rather be considered as a prove that the proposal is possible, and as a starting point to develop a functional version.
Stage 2
ADJUSTABLE It just takes pulling out the middle part and rotating the tip to get the desired size for the rivet in use.
SECURE When one of the handles is moved, the button pops up, triggering the locking mechanism that prevents the handles from fully closing. To store the tool, pressing back the button is enough to release the lock.
CASE A case, besides reducing the use of disposable materials, makes the product stand out and it adapts to de diverse points of sale. Certainly, it also provides a different experience to the buyer.
ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSIONS Stage 3 Despite the fact that we are really satisfied with the achieved design, also are we conscious that there are some opportunity areas to improve in the future. Yet, the Ruzt manual riveter provides a great ergonomic improvement. Throughout the design process, it was sometimes necessary to look back at previous steps and activities. However, this is all part of the design practice, and it is a key step to really add value to our design. Also, we now have a better understanding of the relevance of having good references that inspire us to be better designers.
