Designing a “System of Colors” for Hospital & Health care

services which will help in improving patient doctor interaction; will create a relaxing environment for the patient; helps in treatment of the patient. NAYAN SHRIMALI / SYSTEM DESIGN / COLOUR PALLETE

There are three principal goals to every healing environment. Healthcare designers strive to heal the patient, support the staff and engage the family. The first goal is to heal the patient. A primary focus is to make sure that patients spend all of their energy fighting the disease, not the healthcare environment. Research reveals that individuals in healthcare settings nationwide agree that privacy, respect as an individual and their safety and security were the highest priorities for their care setting.

The hospital design was also influenced by the Planetree model of patient centered care. The core components of design included these principles: • Human interaction • Importance of family, friends and social support • Patient access to information and education • Nutritional and nurturing aspects of food • Healing environments through architecture and interior design • Arts and entertainment programs • Spirituality • Importance of human touch • Complementary therapies • Healthy communities

interview with mr. parashar vyas (executive manager, shri kutchhi jain bhavan) The jains from Kutch speak “Kutchhi” language not gujarati. The jains in Kutch have the same rituals and traditions as other jain’s around the state. Influence of Kutchhi culture is seen in the clothing and housing style of the Kutchhi jain people. Environmental influence is the main difference between normal jain and a Kutchhi jain. Kutchhi jain are quiet wealthy comparing to the other jain from the state.

“ The reason for which the Kutchhi culture is so vibrant and colorful is lack of natural colors and beauty which makes the residents to wear colorful clothes and make beautiful murals on their houses so the balance of beauty is maintained in their surroundings”

Color or colour

is the visual perceptual property corresponding in humans to the categories called red, blue, yellow, green and others. Color de-

rives from the spectrum of light (distribution of light power versus wavelength) interacting in the eye with the spectral sensitivities of the light receptors.

COLOR SYSTEM (according to direction)

NORTH SOUTH EAST

northern exposure

Rooms that face north are the most difficult to decorate – especially if you are trying to create light and space. However, if you want to use lighter tones, try to avoid anything with a green or grey base in a north facing room. Opt for yellow based colours such as Yellow Ground and creamy neutrals such as White to bounce as much light around as possible.

NORTH SOUTH EAST

southern exposure

South facing rooms are a joy to decorate because the quality of light allows one to use both warm and cool colours. In order to maximise the feeling of light it is best to use a less coloured palette – pale tones for a light and airy space. Cool pale blues will create a wonderful watery seaside feel while the red based neutrals create a warmer and more sophisticated feel. In south facing rooms you can use a fairly bright white on the woodwork and ceilings to create a crisp and fresh look.

NORTH SOUTH EAST

eastern exposure

The light in east facing rooms can appear to be a little blue so it is best to work with this and choose greens or blues. To create as much light as possible but still retain some warmth, look at pale duck egg colours which will really come alive in the morning sunlight. Because the light will change so dramatically through the day it is often good to team these with a darker tone on woodwork or furniture such as Green so that the walls appear lighter in contrast. If you want to use a white, choose one with a green or blue base.

western exposure

Obviously white walls are natural light reflectors and will flatter any colour of furnishing - this is particularly true in west facing rooms where white will enhance both natural and artificial light and give you a wonderful airy feeling. Even the greyer neutrals should retain a feeling of light – although the colour will change from morning to night – cooler earlier and warmer later. However evening and afternoon sun also works extremely well with reds, so it is worth considering a soft pink to create a really warm glow without losing too much light.

Hospital Overall color scheme White/Off white + Green

White can be used to make a space feel larger or that it has more light. On its own, pure brilliant white can look high maintenance, particularly with very modern interior design styles that include lots of polished surfaces. To soften the look of a room, use layers tints (from chalky white to ivory) and textures (in walls, textiles, and floor coverings). This will help make a white room warmer and more inviting both psychologically and physically. In general, this color is interpreted as cool or cold. These hues come from the shorter wavelengths of the spectrum. The greens that are more yellow are considered warmer. Greens that are more blue are considered cooler. http://continuingeducation.construction.com/crs.php?L=222&C=928

Corridor / Passage way Warm Neutral tones for side walls + Brighter accent colors for End walls, Doors, etc.

Corridors consume large areas within the hospital. Generally, corridors in public spaces can be painted using a wide variety of colors. Visual calmness when colors are being selected for corridors can be important when finalizing a palette for other parts of the hospital.Lighting in the corridor is also important. Diffused lighting in corridors is preferable to the use of overhead fluorescent. Soft lighting placed in cornices or sidewall soffits avoids the institutional appearance and glare of overhead fluorescent lighting. Lighting can be used to illuminate a color accent, a change in direction of the corridor or as a means to add to the atmosphere of a waiting room

Public Access Areas (lobbies, waiting area, etc.) Warmer color scheme = good organization + Maximum degree comfort Public spaces in a hospital range from lobbies and waiting rooms, to corridors, nursing stations and cafeterias. Lobbies and waiting rooms welcome the patient and their family to the healthcare setting. These areas should be welcoming and promote social interaction through comfortable, movable furniture and different levels of lighting that can offer some control to visitors. The palette chosen for waiting areas should be calming and soothing with a variety of color accents and art for visualinterest.

Depending on surgery performed, color selections may vary. In general, neutrals, greens, teals and blues are chosen due to their cool and soothing qualities. Many new surgical suites are offering LED lighting with filters that can change the color of the lighting to one chosen by the patient. Glass panels have been incorporated into rooms to mask equipment, sometimes etched with scenes of nature. In addition, postsurgical patients recover more quickly, hospital stays are shortened, and costs reduced when patients are exposed to a window view.

Enhanced maternity areas provide an excellent experience for new mothers and sometimes begin the life-long relationship with the healthcare facility. Home-centered design, art and improved aesthetics align with the perception of excellent care. Delivery/birthing rooms should be soothing in nature. Colors may range from warm, comforting tones to those that are cooler and relaxing. Indirect lighting, floor to ceiling curtains, beautiful textures, art and wood furnishings add to the sense of a residential atmosphere. The translucent skin of infants reflect color; therefore, pale neutrals and off-whites are preferred rather than pink, yellow, green, blue and gray which can make diagnosis and medical evaluations more difficult for the doctor. http://continuingeducation.construction.com/crs.php?L=222&C=928

Recent trends in healthcare settings for patient rooms are the creation of homelike settings. Important patient essentials are the inclusion of family, comfort and privacy. In addition, patients should feel connected to the outside world and have a sense of control. The following concepts provide some tools for designing the patient room. For deciding a color system for hospital the user first needs decide which hospital area they want to re-color after that they have to see in which direction windows are in the room after that they need to combine both parameters of the color system (acc. to direction & acc. to specific area) according to their requirement of space, so they will get a color scheme for the direction of window and a color scheme for their chosen hospital space. After combining these two parameters one can choose color combination according to their choice from the color pallete.

C O N C L U S I O N Color plays an integral role in our lives. We interact with them in our daily routine. Colour affects our mood and helps us to express. Color as a part of an interior space design is one of the crucial and strong statement about the behaviour of that space. In this study I examined the symbology of color and how to apply them according to the need of the space and the user. Spaces can be transformed completely by merely changing its color.

Health care holds importance for everyone. At different life stages, we have to consult the health care centers for a better living. During my study I came across this observation that colors are an essential part of interior space design for a Health care unit.It affects the mental state of the patient and the staff of the premises. Appropriate colour brings relaxation and optimism in the patient which indeed helps in his/her treatment. Whereas certain colors can bring distress and illness. Apart from influencing the medical behaviour of the patient, colors

are aids in easy identification of the different health care units. It might help the relatives of the patients to locate them. This study has enhanced my color sensitivity and helped me in integrating the design learning’s with a real life experience. It also gave me an opportunity to probe into human psyche and behaviour pattern. This project gave me a holistic learning on understanding colors and its application and relevance in an interior space.
