Kia ora koutou. There is a really positive vibe around the school at the moment as we prepare for another one of our famous school productions: Bugsy Malone. I have had the privilege of seeing the hard work that is happening at rehearsals and I can assure you that such a professional and entertaining musical only happens with the focus of the cast and crew and the tireless support of a large number of staff and parents. I wish them all the best in their final preparations. Dandy Dan: “Okay fellas, this is our moment. Keep a cool head and keep those fingers pumpin’, ‘cause remember, it’s history you’ll be writin’. “
This line from Bugsy Malone appeals to me as it is a good reminder of the grit and determination needed to see goals through to the end. The first half of term two is always a little colder and it can be harder for students to motivate themselves to meet their daily commitments in the classroom. We have certainly been appreciative of your support in getting students correctly dressed, to school on time and to complete assessments. For our part here at school, teachers are monitoring attendance, attitude and completion of work closely. I am very proud of the strength and experience that our deans and guidance staff always bring to their work. The support Nayland College can offer students and families has been recognised as being of a superior standard numerous times by ERO. We know that encouraging students to maintain their focus on their schoolwork during term two contributed to our high literacy rates at level 1 in 2013 (over 90%) and we are on track to do this again.
There is extensive research that shows the positive effect on mental health that belonging to a group, team or club can have for us all. Being connected to others through trying new things or through a shared interest is an important cornerstone of good health. They provide ways to build friendships and have fun. For teenagers, taking part in extracurricular activities is an important way to establish an adult identity and set up habits that last a lifetime. It has a particularly positive effect when it mimics real life something that is easy to facilitate in coeducational settings.

The recent basketball tournament organised by the Sports Council was a great example of a fun lunchtime event with a healthy dose of competition.
others by saying “hello”, opening a door, helping someone, leaving rooms tidy and getting involved, we all contribute to Manaaki Nayland.
Many teenagers take up activities at high school for the first time and then discover talents that they didn’t know they had. It is very rewarding to see the way so many of our students are mentored and coached into competing at the highest levels and exploring the full range of their talents.
This newsletter features an update of our recent sports accolades along with some of the other activities that our students have been up to. While the photos are of the students, I would like to end with a heartfelt thank you for the many hours that go into coaching and mentoring these talented and keen sportsmen, sportswomen and performers. It is a special feature of this school that so many are so willing to give up their time for others. As we look to bring the next group of year 9 students into our College, it is exciting to think of the opportunities that they have ahead of them.
There are a number of students such as Holly Chandler, Olivia Miller and Tommy McDowell all competing at the very highest level. We have had some very pleasing news that 2013 graduate Gus Riley has been awarded a scholarship to study in the US. We are particularly proud that this is both an academic and a sporting scholarship, reflecting Gus’ dual focus on his sport and his studies. I thoroughly enjoyed my time away with the Tawa teams in our recent annual exchange. In the last 5 weeks I have had the pleasure of watching students rehearse Bugsy, perform in dance and compete in debating, chess, football, netball and rugby. Confident, adaptable contributors I recently spoke at assembly about how appreciative I am of the very positive contribution that all students have to making this college a safe and friendly place to be. Along with the primary and intermediate schools in the Stoke community, Nayland has worked hard on creating a culture of respect for self and for others. By connecting with

Save our girls:
“What if it was us?” asked the girls from Nayland College and then they decided to join the global outcry over Nigeria’s abducted schoolgirls. They lent their voices to a social media campaign to urge action over the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria by terrorist group Boko Haram. More than 200 female students took part in this photograph which they shared through social media to show their outrage. Our photo has been shared 637 times on Facebook, 28 times on Twitter (and counting), so we can all feel proud that we made a real contribution!
Incredible Science Success for Nayland Students “It’s an affirmation of what we are doing in our accelerate programme and Science in general,” said Head of Science Hamish McLellan. Mitchell Chandler and Adam Pauling have been selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend the Australia New Zealand Advancement of Science residential programme for secondary students (Youth ANZAAS) in Melbourne for one week during July. They are two of only seven students in the country to have been selected. Adam and Mitchell will join 40 Australian secondary school students to learn about the latest science research. They will visit Monash University, RMIT University, which is an Australian technology university, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research and also Synchrotron. Oliver Sircombe-Kohen is one of only six students representing NZ at the World Science Conference in Jerusalem, Israel. The WSCI will bring young students from all around the world for an intensive five day programme. During the conference the participants will have a chance to attend lectures, to interact, and to be inspired by 20 Nobel Laureates and other leading scientists from around the world. Oliver will also experience a unique opportunity to meet and get to know some 300 bright students from all around the globe, no doubt including some of the next generation of leading scientists.
