She was born in Nelson and attended Nayland College. She is married to men's singles and triples player Shannon McIlroy and together they are representatives of the New Zealand Black Jacks. Amy started playing bowls at age 12 thanks to her uncle introducing her to the sport. She won the NZ Secondary Schools Pairs title in 2005 and 2006, and was runner up in the NZ Secondary Schools Singles title in 2008. Further success came in 2008 where she won the New Zealand Under-21 Singles title followed by a runner-up placing to Jo Edwards in the 2010/2011 National Women's Singles in Dunedin. 2014 was a huge year for Amy. She achieved national success again as a member of the winning fours team at the New Zealand Championships. She then competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games as part of the women's triples and women's fours teams where she won the bronze medal in the women's fours events along with teammates Mandy Boyd, Selina Goddard and Val Smith.
