Injuries such as cuts, amputations, crushing, caused by moving machinery or sharp edges, in particular guillotines, printing presses and stapling machines may cause contusions, etc. Printers are exposed to printing inks, toners, dyes, organic solvents, cleaning formulations, etc. The use of hand tools, mixing equipment, etc. may cause mechanical hazards. A fire hazard exists in printing shops. There are ergonomic problems, related to overexertion and fatigue
Accident hazards Slips, trips and falls, in particular on wet floors or cluttered passages or when carrying loads Blows from falling objects, in particular from overhead conveyers Blows and contusions from moving machinery Entanglement between cylinders and rollers, between strong webs and reels at reel-up stands (printing machines), folding machines, and other moving or rotating machinery or equipment Cuts and lacerations to the fingers and hands Fire risks from flammable materials, in particular paper, cardboard and organic solvents C

Hazard Identified & Prevention 6
Chronic poisoning by lead, nickel and other metal salts, in particular in hot-casting or "electrotype" processes, or in photographic plate development Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in toners and inks; this is a pronounced hazard through both inhalation and skin contamination Mists released from isocyanates can lead to severe sensitization problems and allergic dermatitis Exposure to printing inks may cause dermatitis; acrylates present in inks are potential skin and respiratory sensitizers. Ethylene-glycol ethers are only mildly irritating to the skin. Vapor may cause conjunctivitis and upper respiratory tract irritation. Acute exposure to ethylene-glycol ethers results in narcosis, pulmonary edema, and severe kidney and liver damage Exposure to oxalic acid has a corrosive action on the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, which may result in ulceration. Chronic exposure to mist has been reported to cause chronic inflammation of upper respiratory tract C

Exposure to tetrachloroethylene may cause a dry, scaly, and fissured dermatitis, central nervous system depression, hepatic injury, and anesthetic death Exposure to trichloroethylene may cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, depression of the central nervous system exhibiting such symptoms as headache, dizziness, vertigo, tremors, nausea and vomiting, irregular blurred vision

Phosgene - a lethal poisonous gas - may be formed if chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene are decomposed in contact with a flame or hot surface, or if a worker smokes in the presence of their vapors (For a list of additional hazardous materials used in printing, see Note 2)
IPrinting shops located in cellars or older buildings may be infested with rodents, insects, etc., exposure to which may cause transfer of diseases to the workers Some printing media support bacterial growth and thus may present a hazard of bacterial exposure
Exposure to laser light Exposure to noise: noise levels in printing shops may exceed 100 dBA Exposure to UV radiation used for curing Exposure to whole-body vibration from printing presses

The Printing Industry is the 6th largest industry in the UK. Approximately 316,000 workers are employed in over 15,000 printing companies.
Accidents in the printing industry
Each year, printing companies report approximately 1,200 work related accidents to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Over 200 of these accidents will be classified as major injuries such as fractures and amputations. The three most common types of accidents reported are: manual handling; slips and trips; and contact with machinery. For more information just click on the links.
Skin at work
Work-related skin disease can affect people in a wide range of occupations. Wherever you work, this site shows how the APC approach (avoid, protect, check) can reduce the chances of suffering painful and sometimes debilitating skin conditions. C

Using less damaging products
-Using products without harmful chemicals will not only benefit the environment but will also reducepotential health risks to employees and clients. -Ask your suppliers about what they can provide in the form of less environmentally damagingproducts. Vegetable or soy-based inks can replace solvent-based inks in offset lithographic printing, and water-based inks are improving in quality for gravure and flexographic printing.
K
Chemical and Ink storage
-Regularly check the condition of all chemical storage containers to ensure they are free from leaks and the lids are fastened tightly when not in use. -Store chemicals on sealed ground (such as reinforced concrete) to prevent spilled materials fromleaching into the soil or groundwater. -Store chemicals undercover and ensure storage areas do not drain or slope to stormwater outlets. This will ensure that storage materials cannot collect, contaminate and mix with rainwater. -Ideally chemical storage areas should have perimeter bunds. A bund is a small wall or barrier thatrestricts the flow of substances and contains them in a particular area. For more information aboutbunding options contact the Green Stamp Coordinator. -Keep all storage areas clean and uncluttered and ensure they are well ventilated. -Minimise the amount of chemicals stored by only purchasing what you need. -Store different types of chemicals in separate containers and if necessary in separate designatedareas to ensure chemicals cannot react with each other. -Keep an up-to-date and legible list or inventory of all chemicals and quantities stored onsite
11
Chemical handling and use
Chemical waste disposal
-Use the ‘first in first out’ procedure for chemical supplies. Date the chemicals you buy and use themin the order in which they arrive. This helps to minimise waste (from out-of-date chemicals) and maintain a high quality of work.
-Never pour waste chemicals or solutions down any sinks or drains unless there is clear documentedinformation that allows you to do so.
-A suitable method for dispensing chemicals (eg. funnels, measuring containers, dispensing systems)should be implemented to reduce the risk of spills and prevent chemical overuse.

-Ensure a licensed liquid waste contractor disposes of any chemicals or hazardous substances andthat all related documentation is kept for a minimum of 3 years. Dedicate a file or folder for all records (itemised invoices etc.) of all liquid and solid wastes leaving your premises.
-Ensure all staff are trained in chemical handling and use not only for occupational health and safety reasons, but also to protect the environment.
-Refer to the Product and Services Directory for liquid waste management companies that handle chemical wastes
Labelling and MSDS
-Ensure all chemicals are clearly labelled and that the information is legible. Read the labels on all chemical products. The label will help you identify the product, its ingredients and the hazards or dangers of the product. The label also contains directions for use such as recommendedconcentrations. Worksafe WA has some useful publications on managing chemical hazards in theworkplace. -Ensure up-to-date Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are held on site for all chemicals stored and used. MSDS offer useful information on the ingredients and physical properties of a product, healtheffects and first-aid instructions, precautions for use, safe handling, storage information andemergency procedures. MSDS are available from your chemical supplier.
