SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT
1
Second announcement of the 21st International Symposium on HIF | July 18-22, 2016 | Astana, Kazakhstan
INVITATION Dear colleagues, You are cordially invited to participate in the 21st International Symposium on Heavy Ion Inertial Fusion (HIF2016), to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan on 18-22 July 2016. This symposium continues the series of symposia that began in Berkeley in 1976. The most recent symposia occurred in Lanzhou, China (2014), Berkeley, USA (2012), Darmstadt, Germany (2010), Tokyo, Japan (2008), and Saint-Malo, France (2006). The purpose of the symposia is to review the status of heavy ion fusion research, and to stimulate further progress in understanding inertial fusion energy production and the science and technology needed for its implementation. Heavy-ion accelerators are promising candidate drivers for energy production due to their high repetition rate and high efficiency. We also expect to critically access the PW-laser applications in ICF (Inertial Confinement Fusion). A positive emphasis will be also given to the ongoing heavy ion accelerator projects at large institutions located in Europe, Russia, China, Japan, USA and others. The highlighted topics of HIF2016 will cover:
• Heavy-Ion Inertial Fusion and other ICF programs; • Properties of Warm Dense Matter: Theory, experiments, and advanced diagnostic techniques; • Ion sources and high power accelerators, Pulsed Power (pulsed energy); • Fusion target physics, Hydrodynamic instabilities; • Beam-plasma interactions, Atomic processes in plasma, laser plasma interactions; • Applications of ICF; • TOKAMAK, Nuclear Science (related to the Kazakhstan activities); • Dark Energy and Dark Matter research; • Heavy ion stopping.
The symposium website: www.hif2016astana.org, is the key information outlet. Please visit the site to find up-to-date information. The symposium email address is hif2016@nu.edu.kz, please feel free to contact us if needed. Please mark your calendars, and please do not hesitate to distribute the announcement to your colleagues who might be interested.
We look forward to welcoming you in Astana in July 2016!

It seeks to promote a qualitative leap forward in the preparation of the next generation of national technical and scientific elites to assist in the industrial-innovative development of the country. Astana, the capital city of Republic of Kazakhstan, is located at the northern region of Kazakhstan and surrounded by forests and lakes. One of the world’s youngest capitals, Astana is a modern city with a favorable environment attractive for tourists and comfortable for guests and residents. Despite being so young, Astana develops fast and steady in every positive aspect: economically, culturally, intellectually, etc. This gives the city its unique spirit of youth and progress, and makes it an increasingly attractive place to live and visit, and to experience «future happening now”.

Detailed information about the trip will be posted on our website on April, 2016. Burabay – a place of heaven on earth in Kazakhstan. Kazakhstani Switzerland is the second name given to Burabay, Kokshetau region, which is in the Northern Kazakhstan. Amidst the yellow scorched unending steppe you just encounter the green wall of forest. It harbors wonders: hillocks overgrown with trees, stony ridges, fantastical heaps of rocks like fairy giants and ghosts as silent as bewitched lakes. This mysterious land is Burabay, also called Borovoe.

«Bura» in Kazakh stands for camel. There is an old legend about prophetic camel, which used to live in Burabay neighborhood. Honey herbage didn’t blunt his instinct for an instant – it was he who was the first to anticipate the people’s awful lot and then he turned to a tulpar (horse) and flew to the peak of Kokshetau thus averting people from the coming misfortune. Old ship timbers and quiet lakes, full of fish and animals, served for many centuries as a refuge for people. On the territory of Burabay archeologists found the armory of primeval bronze epoch. Excavation of settlements and burial moulds belonging to bronze epoch testify to the fact that Burabay was resided not only by hunters, but also by the farmers and cattle breeders. Scythian tribes involved in gold and ore mining didn’t but passes this oasis. Burabay lacks any monuments of material culture. But its legends, nature do impress as some grand castles and palaces. The nature kindly gifted Burabay with valuables from its mineral depository. They are as following: Okzhetpes – the most beautiful crag (Kasakhs used to call it «one can’t reach it by an arrow»), Zhumbaktas (puzzlestone), in the Burabay bay resembling either a mysterious sphinx with frozen fearless traits, or a thoughtful, young man with hair flying; vast stony sculptures, resembling a camel, a dog, a cow. Burabay pine forest is good at any time, in every weather. In winter the pine forest is covered with white snow, in summer – a light wind blows up the aromatic resinous waves, in autumn – the forest smells the peculiar air, a mixture of wet pine rind with mushrooms and herbs. Burabay is a resort, known far beyond Kazakhstan, rich in health centers, which are involved in climatology treatment and treatment by “kumus (horse’s milk).
