Why I Teach William Hallahan, Ph.D., Biology “When I was a child, I played outside every day….Teaching is an opportunity for me to bring others into the out-of-doors to explore new environments and see first hand how animals and plants survive together. At Nazareth, I take students on field trips to local ecosystems. The most memorable expedition was a summer project in which two students and I surveyed the loon populations in the Adirondacks, carrying canoes into lakes where few people visited. More recently, I have taken students to the tropical environments of Costa Rica and Belize, to Peru, and the Amazon jungle. In the center of Europe, Berlin offers easy access to all points in all directions, but it also offers students a truly powerful learning location as they experience both traditional European culture and the consequences of the Cold War.

Languages and International Nazareth understands the power of travel and immersion in other cultures. So we offer some of the broadest language and international studies programs you’ll find anywhere. In fact, dozens of students and faculty here have been honored with scholarships from the Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international education exchange. Our students are selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University, the Clinton Foundation’s international student conference addressing pressing global challenges. We also recognize that no two students are alike. So we offer lots of ways to participate. Some students live with host families. Some choose a traditional exchange program. Sciences and Math Undergrads have research opportunities at Nazareth as early as freshman year, using our well-equipped facilities. The sizable biology lab is ideal for students in life science, pre-med, physical therapy, nursing, and other health-related majors.
