LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
STOP TALKING, START WALKING Danish design – dead or alive? This is the question we ask local designer Nicholai Wiig Hansen in this December issue. This question arises from our continuous shop spotting all around Copenhagen bumping in to so much more than just Danish delights. Are we still in a position to say that we know how to wing it in terms of design? According to Nicholai Wiig Hansen the golden days are long gone but we still have what it takes in the brain department as a population. So what is to become of Danish design and culture from a revenue point of view whilst we figure out how to activate our collective brain pool? If you ask left-wing lioness Ayfer B, we can position Denmark globally by exporting green solutions worldwide but starting in our own backyard. That is, by innovating smarter solutions that build on the established Danish tradition of design but incorporate new fields, techniques, and expertise and prototyping them here first, in Denmark. NY, Seoul and similar megacities already use our infrastructure as blue print inspiration when they grow their metropolis' with bike paths and bicycle culture in general. What Ayfer is saying is that beautiful "posters and toasters" is not enough. Danish design of the 21st century is about smart solutions that incorporate culture and lifestyles. While talking to the good man Wiig you actually see some of the same ideas growing. One of the greatest pleasures of

knowing the people of the neighbourhood is that you can't help but run into people who want to make a difference, improve situations and conditions, and push the boundaries of what is possible and desirable. I can’t help but thinking I have to leave a copy or two in the mailbox for some of the final decisionmakers at Christiansborg. Not that I want to be pretentious with our local magazine, but the desire and appetite among the many brainy minds and hardworking shop owners, designers and local politicians like Nicholai and Ayfer just show that there is a rumble in jungle out here. We even have grassroot organisations like Miljøudvalg Østerbro and Østerbro Lokaludvalg shaking up the scene and with great success. For example, projects like 2100.nu generating 100 green ideas in one district of Copenhagen (Østerbro) in one year ensuring 10% less CO2 emission, actually succeeded! This is what it is all about. Getting the brainy innovators and quirky souls to start working together. The potential of this little confined space is actually quite impressive. If you are off-put by my political jabbering, don't despair completely. We are still in the business of soothing your desire for great city spotting and shopping. We’ve got a serious line up of mouthwatering delis, cool cat shops for this second Ø*Bronx issue - and a fashion shoot to keep you warm and well entertained on these cold winter days ahead of us.

About half way down Ndr. Frihavnsgade from Trianglen you will run in to a small unpretentious men’s shop named Brund. This great hideout is governed by 5 dedicated gents who all possess the know-how far beyond the normal when it comes to the best American work boots, classic English shoes and raw denim from around the world. If you have a hang up for the heritage classics you’ll feel well at home here. Edwin, Big John, special Lee models and much more are always on their denim shelves. Henrik Brund, who owns and founded this shop, had his heart stolen by the American boot brand Red Wing many years ago. Today he can proudly present the largest collection of models

in Scandinavia. So if you are looking for a model that moves beyond the Moc Toe evergreen, then this is the place to check out. The really great thing about this place is the mix - from the best classic American menswear along with British and French heritage such as Barbour and Saint James. In here everything is carefully selected. Henrik has travelled both England and the US several times to visit the legendary factory plants such as Red Wing and Loake. In this kind of business brand relations become quite personal. So we take our hats off to Henrik and his crew for walking the line and keeping his faith in a masculine style that will never fade or become high street fashion.

One of the really great things about Østerbro when it comes to shopping (especially clothes shopping) is that it’s very unique. Down close to the intersection of Jagtvej and Østerbrogade you find a cluster of unique, speciality shops. Among them you find Å, yeah that’s right – the weird letter we Danes keep to ourselves. I guess for foreigners it's mostly a symbol, which is just fine to Peter who owns this place. He had his inspirations for the shop whilst travelling in Soho and Greenwich Village in New York and wanted to reflect something very Nordic to his shop's identity. Since 2007 the dream he'd once had on the trendy corner in NY soon become reality on this little modest but quite attractive corner
7
in Østerbro. The casual jeans style in here is a nonchalant mix between Scandinavian brands like NN07 and Tiger jeans mixed with a good squeeze of British sub-culture brands like Fred Perry and Ben Sherman. If you’re ever in doubt then give the good man ‘Dag' a shout! This dude is more patient than most and he knows how to guide you to the pieces that actually fits you and your style. Dag was raised in an old school men’s shop back in Jutland where professional attention and courtesy were their core values. The service in here is something out of the ordinary. Drop by Dag's Å and say hi from us. Service at its best! This is what you get in here.

ØBRONX INTERVIEW
Danish Design – Dead or Alive?
Meet Nicholai Wiig Hansen from Willemoesgade - the designer of several IKEA classics and new modern design icons in the name of Normann Copenhagen. Being a son to one the most respected and beloved contemporary Danish artists, Nicholai had art and design infused in his veins since early childhood. This multi talented designer has experience to boot and has rightfully earned his spot to speak on the subject. This man is more than just a one hit wonder. He is the recipient of the Red Dot award 2013 and the German Design Award 2014 for his new thermo jug manufactured by Normann Copenhagen. We went for a cold beer during happy hour in Nicholai's busy workshop down at one of our all-time favourite areas in Østerbro.
1. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ARTIST AND A DESIGNER IN YOUR OPINION?
2. IS ”DANISH DESIGN” STILL A CONCEPT THAT MAKES SENSE OR ARE THOSE DAYS OVER?
I think you can find as many answers as performing professionals on this subject….. Artists can be geniuses with an urge and passion that only make sense to themselves. Artists don’t have a string attached to sell a lot of products. They are in a position to ask questions about life and society. The case is totally reversed when it comes to designers. We are born and raised to be commercial on behalf of our clients who need problems and questions solved. Our success depends on our ability to transform creativity into hard selling products. A designer only knows about 25 years later if he actually made it. He knows he's made it when his products made a decade ago, are still in circulation on the market today. I normally have this mental test with the products I create – if they get left out on the street, will somebody nick it – or at least pick it. You know reduce and reuse actually make sense to me despite the fact that I earn my living by putting new products into this world. Great products keep circulating and get reused until they fall apart. They don’t just get deserted and left in a dumpster. The ability to create these kinds of products is what defines a great designer in my perspective.
The concept of Danish Design was born back in the previous century in another lifetime. Back then designers were working closely and in depth with the Danish furniture manufactures. Today this kind of manufacturing is pretty much extinct. Sad, but true. Sad because actual manufacturing and production is essential for great design to evolve and progress. It is through the merger of the know-how of the distinct trades and human interaction that great solutions come to life. So yeah, the glory days of wonder boys such as Finn Juul and Børge Mogensen are over, but the new generations of Danish designers still have some privileged resources that earn them respect and skills that are indeed attractive. The fact that we as a nation are being brought up among great design in everything from schools to police stations, sophisticated infrastructure combined with a social understanding and reflection is indeed beneficial when it comes to creating great design objects. I even dare say that the much hated ”Jante Lov” this unique Danish rule that dictates that no one is better than any one else, and you should live your life that way -with modesty- might actually benefit the designers around here. This weird law might actually be of benefit for the designers around here. This is because, despite having the cupboard full of world famous designers, each new designer starts out humbly and simply. Just because you got the chance to go for stars and ribbons, you don’t if you are a Dane. You keep it simple and functional, and then you let beauty rise from within. I kind of like that! What I miss is some balls from our dear politicians who have the great responsibility of handling our country’s economy. Our economy. I find it peculiar that design is not more on the radar. I mean if we’re so proud of the golden days, then why don’t we get back in to action and nurture the growth of design and manufacturing. It takes some to get to know some. 10
ØBRONX INTERVIEW
4. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE PART OF IN THE FUTURE?
3. OUTSIDE DENMARK IT´S NOT A PROBLEM TO SAY THAT YOU ARE THE SHIT. THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE? WHAT IS THE LOW DOWN ON THAT?
A Think Tank! Yeah, and not one of the ordinary ones. I think it’s about time that we start mixing some of the good brains we’ve still got running around in this country across professions. Don’t mind fancy titles. The name of the game here is mutual inspirational behaviour. I don’t make better solutions by sitting with a team of like-minded designers, but put me together with a group of talents who can grow with each other – imagine a body therapist, a dietician, a medical practitioner, an artist, a manufacturer and an architect – and I promise you we could come up with new solutions for the Danish Hospital's infrastructure that could rock the boat inside and outside Denmark; creating happy clients for the politicians, work for local Danes and export options for Danish companies. God damn, we are so protective about our individual trades and rights that we lose all the really great potential right at our fingertips. Seriously! Our power and strength is the magic that happens between our brains and crafted hands when we start working together and actually start behaving innovatively. This is what collaboration is all about. Why are hospital rooms more difficult to clean than an ordinary apartment? – I mean try check out the panels – it’s just not made to keep clean! Shady food is served from trollies that make you think you are nothing but an animal on an industrial farm, and the interior and decor will for sure make you feel like a full-scale cancer patient even though you just came in with a broken leg. Come on! We can do better!
Yeah, it´s a bit of a dilemma. The days are over where we just have a good old time in our own little pond. The market is global today and designers are on the attacking part of the team. And in that sense you can’t just stand around waiting for somebody to see how special and talented you are. You've got to walk the talk. And I don’t really give a shit about those who shout the loudest in fancy designer magazines and hyped co-labs. Go create! That’s what it's all about. Great design is about great products that move your soul and solve your problems. It´s not about the designer behind it. Storytelling is part of the game but let it be a minor part where it belongs. The really great design object have to be able to communicate itself across borders and cultures. Great design is no longer a trade with a nation label. We are global today and we have to act accordingly. As producers as well as consumers. Take a stand and go for the right solutions. Not just the cheapest or loudest. I know I can’t ask for this attitude in rising economies, but in our part of the world it actually makes sense.
I think that I am so privileged at this point in my life that I can allow myself to have these dreams and try to ignite them. A better world always starts with a dream and an urge to do better, to be better. Game On! 11

It's fair to call us regulars at this melting pot of sophisticated pleasures, so here are our recommendations for this winter’s must-haves. Close to the intersection of Østerbrogade and Jagtvej you'll find a new shop on the street, but not a new kid on the block. The first couple of years were spent in a small side street just around the corner. But since autumn Jerome, the man behind Da Zilva, thought it was time to make changes. Jerome was educated as a designer in Paris and has worked, for many years, around the globe before returning to Copenhagen and making his dream a reality – by running his own place and building his own brand. One of the specialties at this place is tailor-made business suits for women who want their fit to perfection. So despite the big party dresses which is what pops into most minds when discussing women’s tailoring it's actually
the discrete black and grey skirts, dresses and suits that take up most of Jerome’s time. Alongside his own creations you can find brands such as Orna Farho for total glam. Sinequanone for more casual days and Emilio Cavallini from Firenze if you need that perfect pair of nylon stockings. Quality matters in this department – for a real fair price. Insider Tip: Emilio Cavallinis stockings are made out of the same fabrics and manufactured at the same locations as Gucci and Dior. If quality is what counts, then you ought to consider these Italian beauties next. P.s. This man does wonders with a needle and a pair of scissors so next time you need your favourite designer pieces altered pop in and see Jerome!

At the corner of Østerbrogade and Ålborggade you can discover Second - which is a 2hand luxury shop that specialises in brands such as Alexander Wang, Chanel, Helmut Lang, Isabel Marant and Marc Jacobs, just to name a few. Second has become a real popular gem along the years with the local female Fashionista militia on Østerbro . The traded goods here are always of a surprising high standard. Sometimes never even used. It’s incredible how many women have brand spanking new misfits lying around in their wardrobes. So Second specializes in a group of brands that are preferably no more than a couple of seasons old. The Danish designer Nicholai Wiig Hansen once
said that great design is when the product can be recirculated from a first too several owners and never be left unattended. Well check out the statement for yourself on page xx. Yes, you can buy a truck load of cheap clothing brands new or instead you can cross down to this cool recycle basement shop. But give it a thought. For the gents who don't quite get it, let’s get it, into the car terminology – if you ask me what I would prefer, a brand new Suzuki Swift or a slightly used Mini Cooper you know the answer, it’s not that hard because style does matters and money still makes a difference to more than a few. Go discover yourself!

If you take pride in the small details and creating very special ambiance in your home, then you have probably already heard about Mette Palsteen. If not, then let us introduce you to one of Denmark’s most respected craftswomen. Mette is the upholsterer and interior designer that gets a call when the Supreme Court, Maersk or Christiansborg Castle need some love and attention on the inside. A pretty impressive portfolio if you ask me. Besides the big corporate and state jobs, Mette actually enjoys working privately for aficionados who desire something special in their home. Sometimes an entire bedroom or level of a house, sometimes just getting the right tapestry for a wall. At
Mettes place it’s easy to fall in love with tender textures, patterns, and colours that make all the difference. That turn something ordinary into the extraordinary. Brands such as Designers Guild, Christian Lacroix, Mark Alexander, Sonia Rykiel and Ralph Lauren are house brands. At Mette's place down at Willemoesgade things are always busy and bustling. At first glance, it looks at first glance like a shop, but in reality it's a full on workshop with several specialist working full speed. To be able to discuss and develop your ideas more fully, it is recommended you book a session in advance. If you want only the best in custom decor, then this is the place.
Gry Fager Randersgade 47, Kld, 2100 København Ø tel: 25 34 39 71 www.gryfager.dk – Open: Wednesday-Friday 10am-5pm. The shop is open the first Saturday of each month 10am-2pm.
Occasionally you can still find some of the real great craftsmen that combine an open workshop with a full scale retail boutique. Enchanting ceramist Gry Fager located down on the corner of Randersgade and Viborggade across from the Bopa square – a rather mellow and bohemian spot when talking about the normally very cultivated Østerbro. Gry Fager has a degree from both School of Glass and Ceramics on Bornholm and The Danish School of Design and had an instant success even before she graduated. Normann Copenhagen, one of Denmarks leading design firms spotted Gry back in 2008 and set her retro cool “Mormor” ceramics collection into full scale production. This earned Gry quite a rep while still being
26
a rookie. Today, Gry runs her own show and she likes to keep it levelheaded and personal meaning she pretty much handles everything in the daily show herself. Dropping in for just the right gift for your friend or yourself on a gloomy winter day can bring out your smile. There is something about this place and artist that is somehow contagious in a really good way. The interplay between shape, function and material in Grys work is fascinating and the range of must haves from this little boutique is ample. Pass by and check it out during December. Getting around Østerbro you can’t help but notice that there is some kind of French fascination around here. The majority of little real good eating places goes quite focused on the french kitchen, in the exclusive clothing shops you run into cool French brands like Saint James and Montcler. So no wonder that you can also find one of Copenhagen’s best French decor shops situated in the most adorable basement shop at the corner of Østerbrogade and Ålborggade. Bolig&Brocante is built and run by the lovely Lotte. Her passion for all things French goes back decades and it should come as no surprise that she also has her own farmhouse down in the Pyrenees. A romantic yet rough and rugged
part of France where artisanal quality can still be found. At Bolig&Brocante you can find the kind of charming decors that infuse your home with a feel and vibe of something warm and carrying. Its kind of challenging to describe but there is something about these handpicked things with a long life behind it that just grows on you when you put it into a new life in a new home. Lotte knows that and as a consequence the majority of what you find down here is older and has seen more of life than any us at Ø*Bronx. Østerbro is famous among Copenhageners for being a favourite hang out borough for mothers, prams and toddlers. As a consequence of the many moms you also find a variety of children shops. Over the years our kids have become quite well dressed and quite many of the best brands also do children collections. Before the crisis you could find lots of stores only focused on designer darlings for kids. That was back then, but today the desire to dress our kids nicely is still very much alive and a few focused shops actually survived the financial crisis. One of the classics is Den Blå Ballon situated on Viborggade, just down the corner from Østerbrogade. Den Blå ballon started out as a luxury 2nd hand kids shop and earned itself
quite a good rep on that behalf. Today you can still find really good used pieces in here from ex. Norlie, Burberry, Abercrombie, Petit by Sofie Schnoor, Christina Rohde, Ver de terre, Bon Point and Bon Ton. Age wise you can find must have pieces for 0-14 year olds. New carefully picked brands have been in high-demand and selling quickly in the last few years. On the boys side our favourites are Vingino and Mini Rodini and Danish local FUB for an edgy tone and Soft gallery, Mini Rodini and Mar Mar for a more delicate touch for the girls. Actually you won't find a problem in leaving with an empty wallet from here. To put it succintly. There is a reason why Den Blå Ballon survived while others didn’t.

You know I might get a bit old school here, but when I was a kid in my local town the best place to hang out was the local toy pusher. Arne just brought in all his favourite pieces disregarding high volume sales. These days it’s almost impossible to find a toy shop that's not part of a corporate monster. But the good news is that down on Trianglen you'll find one rebel who doesn't give a damn about modern global toy management and due diligence and that’s just how it’s been for the last 30 years. At A.B. Legetøj its all about passion. The variety of special goods is just mind blowing. Yeah, I admit me and my boys are down here quite often
checking out the latest special imported Lego mini figures and Marvel superheroes. You just have to ask my kids and they'll tell you that it’s one step from paradise. This is how a toy shop should be! Simple as that. In here you'll only find playful souls who actually like kids behind the counter and the variety of toys will puzzle and challenge you – child or adult. From a more professional perspective I just really respect this place. Out of full on anarchy and juvenile passion this group of playful minds have built a business that could be used as a textbook. They even run a cool FB page with full on customer interaction. A.B. – Keep Rocking!

start in life with a good education and an acceptable standard of living. Luckily Danes are very acceptant of people with another ethnic background. Personally I was lucky to get great help from a Danish friend of my parents with my schoolwork. She also introduced me and my parents to other parts of the Danish society. So I haven’t experienced more problems or fewer opportunities because of my background.
EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD CARS ARE TAKING UP MORE ON AND MORE CITY SPACE. YOU THINK YOU CAN CHANGE THAT DIRECTION IN COPENHAGEN AND MAKE US MORE”GREEN”. HOW CAN YOU CHANGE WHAT OTHERS CAN’T? Going green shouldn’t be a question about making people do something they don’t want to do. For me going green is improving the quality of life. Luckily I share this green agenda with a lot of Copenhageners. Copenhageners are already used to the idea that a city is not only for cars. Half of them use their bike on their way to work and they are ready to switch car parking into safe bike lanes. That means that they are ready for discussions about whether streets, car parking and other areas could be switched into other things for example parks and green areas instead. We also know Copenhageners want a greener city. Some of the most popular places in Copenhagen are the harbour baths, the new Svanemøllen beach and Fælledparken. It tells us that Copenhageners want recreational areas and use them when they are there. So we should have the political will to ensure that the city becomes greener. Of course it isn’t all Copenhageners that are eager to give up their cars. But only a minority has a car and we cannot let them stop a change for the better.
MIND GAMES - IF YOU COULD HAVE 4 LIMITED YEARS TO EXPERIMENT WITH COPENHAGEN TO MAKE US BECOME THE GREEN HOT SPOT YOU DREAM OF– WHAT WOULD YOU DO? I would convince the Parliament to adopt either road pricing or congestion charges so that the number of cars will decrease in Copenhagen and we have city space available for trees, parks and channels. I would also start switching more streets into green bike and bus streets in order to make the alternatives to the cars so attractive that people want to leave their cars at home. I would start making channels and small parks all around the city instead of car parking lots. This will both enable the city to deal with the climate change including heavier rain and improve the quality of life in the city. THESE LAST YEARS YOU HAVE BEEN ON A FAST-TRACK IN COPENHAGEN POLITICS. YOUR TURKISH BACKGROUND MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM THE ORDINARY PROFILE. WERE YOU RAISED TO BE AMBITIOUS OR DID SOMETHING TRIGGER YOU? I engage myself in political decisions because I can’t let it be! My parents were the same way. My father was also very engaged politically and I remember as a child walking in protest with my mother against nuclear power. But it was really back in the student council I saw that through engagement you could change things. Later I’ve been involved in work for immigrant women, AIDS and other agendas. What really triggers me is social injustice. It makes me want to do whatever I can to help people. Similar with the environment - I won’t accept that a few people destroy our city and planet for future generations. DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHAT ETHNIC AND SOCIAL BACKGROUND YOU HAVE WHEN YOU RUN FOR TOP POSITIONS IN CITY POLITICS? Of course your social background plays an important role in the opportunities you get in life. I fight for more equality in Copenhagen. We need to make sure all children get a good 31
AS A LEFT WING LIONESS YOU FIGHT FOR A BETTER INTEGRATION AMONG SOCIALLY AND ECONOMICALLY RICH AND POOR PEOPLE IN COPENHAGEN. BUT YOUR OWN PRIVATE ADDRESS IS IN ØSTERBRO, A NEIGHBOURHOOD MANY WOULD CALL A RICH MAN’S GHETTO. WHY? I grew up in an old apartment in Østerbro with a toilet in the yard. Not a place people would consider to be a rich man’s ghetto... I live in the same street today with my husband a few doors from where I grew up. I have not chosen to stay because it has now become one of the better parts of Copenhagen. It’s because I really love my neighbourhood. I like being able to do all my shopping in the area. It means I can walk around, and that I meet people I have known for years. The story of my neighbourhood tells me, that we can develop other parts of Copenhagen as well.. HOW DOES ØSTERBRO MANAGE IN INTEGRATING DIFFERENT LEVELS IN SOCIETY? DOES THIS BOROUGH HAVE ANY SPECIAL TRADEMARKS GOOD AND BAD? I love Østerbro. It has a sense of Berlin and Paris with its cafes and areas like Bopa Plads. We are close to the sea and I like to go for a swim with my dog in the summer time. We have Fælledparken where all kinds of people come to relax, barbecue, run, or play football. These great outdoor spaces are perfect for the interaction and integration of people with different backgrounds. Of course there is a risk that Østerbro changes because many of the flats have gone from, cheap to very expensive.

Theater Republique is one of the cultural contemporary hot spots, which you must have on the top of your to do list if your first language isn’t Danish. Being one of the very few theatres this place is preforming just as much in English as it is in Danish. Modern classics with new interpretations are on the menu. I guess its fair to say that these artists are talented in the world to Copenhagen. Rest assure, in here you will always encounter a clean cut visual style that will blow your mind. Actually the clean minimalistic design line is becoming more and more a
trademark of this place. Lately the side show of graphic posters has become quite trendy amongst design Copenhagen shoppers. The lines, curves and colour scheme just capture the Copenhagen minimalistic and expressive vibe. Get your hands on these graphic goodies through their website or by dropping by their physical ticket office. Yes, they actually have real people ready to serve and guide you, which is quite a rare thing these days. A tip with the monocle from us at Ø*Bronx for keeping it edgy, personal and challenging around here.

Glasses are not just glasses. They are the frames around the mirror of your soul. I don't even wear glasses myself, but damn I wish I did! Instead I own plenty of sunglasses. The change in style and attitude a set of frames can do to most faces never ceases to amaze me. Let me put it straight, to me glasses are like jewellery and I think chicks with the right glasses are damn hot! There I said it and I mean every word of it! The big trick is to have the right guidance and this is where Peter and Maria come in to the equation as my favourite optical dealers. Of
course it gives them quite a step ahead carrying brands like Lindberg, the elegant Tom Ford and white hot Götti but what really matters in here is that these two eye wizards are passionate about their trade and master the skills of guiding their customers just the right way. Well actually Peter and Maria are so much into their passion that they even developed their own brand – Koldby Copenhagen. A Østerbro born and raised eyewear brand! So Wicked! Especially because this household brand actually walks the talk. Cool and understated like few, not even a logo!

BEM-VINDO A COPENHAGA, O BOM PORTUGUÊS! Visit our store at Fælledvej 25, 2200 Kbh N www.obomportugues.com
You know those fancy wine shops with all those traditional wines that are all well overpriced? This isn’t one of them. O Bom Português is a new kind of wine store and café in the heart of Nørrebro. We have spent the last nine months travelling, researching and bargaining with the very best wine producers and coffee suppliers from Portugal to be able to offer you the very best of Portugal right here in Copenhagen’s most vibrant neighbourhood.
Portuguese wine has been misunderstood by Danish wine lovers for far too long. Partly because the wrong wines were imported, partly because the story about the many wonderful varieties of Portuguese wines were never told properly. It’s time to turn the page. We are excited to introduce to Denmark the true jewels of Vinho Verde, Espumante, Alentejo, Dão and Douro.

This gives more space for visitors to chill and go discovering in this post-modern industrial workshop that is dominated by raw iron and massive Douglas planks. If you think that the Kontra´s are kind of formula one, then you are on to something. Among the driving forces you find both a former barista world champion as well as the founder of the acclaimed Amokka that kick started the coffee mania in Denmark back around the turn of the century. Don’t just trust us. Go discover the beans, the brew and machines yourself!
Wanna take a swing in the ring with a Probat 3 Pipe Gas Trial Roaster or the AeroPress? At Kontra Coffee down “Lille Trianglen” close to the American embassy you find a coffee house out of the ordinary. Many tend to run away from what they got forced into during their childhoods but not in the case of Søren & Jesper D. Today they successfully run one of Copenhagens best wine spots importing almost 90% of the wines themselves making them more independent than most. They focus on value for money and not the standard brand hype to show off. You'll find all parts of the world represented in this store. You’ll be surprised when you walk in the door - nothing is pretentious. The quirky brown tiles covering the walls were so hot back in the 70’ies and the rest of the decor is very simplistic to put it mildly. But that’s just how it is. This place is all about the love of seafood and wild stock. And it’s been like that for the past 108 years. Brian and Sanna know how to maintain a very loyal crowd of followers. You’ll find the mussels will never come with sand and you’ll always have at least three variations of fresh Oysters on the shelves. One of

Over the years Dagens Fisk has become famous beyond the local turf for carrying some of the best birds in town– flown in from the south of Jutland where the grass is green and the corn larger than life. If you are yearning about that time you went to France and enjoyed those wonderful casual meals at odd times in the little cozy bistros, then you should pay Figaro Bistro & Winebar in Willemoesgade a visit. Lionel and his French/Danish staff will greet you with an original French accent as you enter the old laundry, which has become his France in Østerbro. Both the wine and food menu is all French and maybe you will have a hard time picking from all the delicious wines and dishes, but don’t worry, you'll surely always thank them later for the variety. With more than 150 different bottled wines and 25 varieties served per glass, there should be something for all tastes and price-points. The personal atmosphere in this place attracts many regulars creating a local and authentic atmosphere.
When Lionel first came to Denmark, he quickly saw the potential in bringing the French bistro food with him, but he soon realized that the French food culture differs from the Danish one. Danes really like the tapas plate, so Lionel created the perfect menu combining the best of France served on a plate the tapas way. Lionel's no. 1 choice on the menu is the Figaro Mixed Platter consisting of the very best in French charcuterie, foie gras and local cheeses from the little French mountain villages. If you fancy a warm dish full of love on a cold winter night, then ask for the daily special. There is only one dish and it changes every second day. It is most often a classic French meaty ragout that will leave your mouth watering when you smell the herbs. So not to worry if you don’t eat superior sausages or fancy goose paté!

There is something deeply rooted about Østerbro and French cuisine. The competition in this gastro field is fierce on the streets of Ø Bronx. The funny thing is that its been like this for years. The French way of food just works in this neighbourhood! Down at Hjertepladsen one of the best tranquil squares in Østerbro you'll find the new kid on the block - Jean Claude who opened three doors just last spring. A simple rugged place with plenty of fresh herbs and glorious bottled grapes from some of the
best wine districts in France. We often stop by for a simple glass of wine and a Salade Nicoise when we are out and about doing our business in Østerbro. It is natural to do so in Østerbro. Østerbro is kind of low on great hang out places for cocktails but there is just one spot on cocktail kitchen that will care for you the right way. Hit it down Århusgade next time you're done with your late Friday shopping or after dinner you just need that extra fresh twist. At Kitjn you will meet a dedicated group of mixologists who just can’t help themselves when it comes to mixing the perfect personal mixture. And we are talking about the right mix for you, not them. If your favourite taste isn’t on the map, don’t be shy to ask. Here they are certainly up
for a challenge! Hanging out here really grows on you. The atmosphere is just right you can actually get a drink, have a conversation with your favourite girl and lounge without being pushed around like the frantic nightclub in the city. I guess without being too cheesy I have to say that the gents down Århusgade actually got the best from their kitchen vibe where private parties are always the best and mixed with high end cocktails that we fancy so well Don Draper style.
