Yakov Kozlov Russian Fine Art
Yakov Ivanovich Kozlov was born to a peasant family. Hunger and cholera swept through the Volga region in the 1920s, leaving only Yakov and his mother alive out of the entire family. They moved to Volsk, followed by Saratov, where his mother married a widowed shoemaker. Yakov, then a teenager, had a difficult time adjusting to his new father and siblings, but it was on his stepfather’s material scraps that the young boy began to draw (the family was too poor to obtain paper). Nobody understood his passion for art, the others made fun of him, punished him and stole his pencils. But he achieved what he wanted and was accepted into an art school. At the time Saratov stile followed the art traditions created by Alexey Petrovich Bogolubov, a wonderful artist of the XIX century. The city even featured a museum founded by Bogolubov in honour of his grandfather, the author Alexander Nikolayevich Radischev, who had been from the area. The art academy was filled with talented teachers and the museum held one of the largest collections of art and graphic design in the province. The professors, museum and overall creative atmosphere had a beneficial effect on the budding artist. He devoured new experiences, absorbing everything from his surroundings. Having graduated from the academy, Kozlov moved to Leningrad, where he began the process of applying to the Academy of the Arts. However, the war began, so Yakov joined the armed forces in 1941. He walked through the entire war as part of the artillery on the Volkonsky frontier, participating in battles under Novgorod and in freeing Leningrad. After the war Kozlov was determined to continue his art education. Upon his return in 1945 he became a student at the Art Academy of Riga, where he learned from the famous Janis Tilbergs, who had, in turn, studied under D. N. Kardovsky. Kozlov became Tilbergs’ favorite student, and after graduating with honors he joined as a teacher in the artist’s studio. Along with teaching, Kozlov also worked on large paintings, many of which make up current collections in Latvian museums. In 1950 Kozlov began participating in exhibitions. In 1957 the president of the USSR Arts Academy saw Kozlov’s work at a national exhibition and offered him a position in Moscow. Yakov Ivanovich began working and living in the capital in 1958, where he joined the Moscow chapter of the USSR Artist’s Union. The artist had a summer studio in the outskirts of Pereslavl Zalessky, the picturesque views of which became a constant source of inspiration for his work. The artist primarily focused on portrait, landscape and scenery paintings. He dedicated many of his works to the Great Patriotic War, which had been an incredibly painful and deeply emotional experience for him. His main works include: Maxim Gorky in Penaty visiting I. Repin (1949), The Arrest of Jan Rainis (1955), Janis Rainis in Exile (1957), Kolkhoz Grooms (1960), Milkmaids (1960), At School (1960), The Return (1966), Conviction (1967), The Goodbye (1941), Little Sister (1974), and He Didn’t Return (1983).
