What'is'Advocacy?'

“The!Art!of!pleading!or!arguing!in!favor!of!something,!such!as!a!cause,!idea!or!policy;! active!support.”!–!American!Heritage!Dictionary!2000! ! !

Different'Types'of'Advocacy'

Direct'Service!

Direct!service!activities!are!those!that!require!personal!contact!with!people!in!need.!This! type!of!service!is!generally!the!most!rewarding!for!students!because!they!receive! immediate!positive!feedback!during!the!process!of!helping!others.!Examples!of!direct! service!activities!include!students'!volunteering!at!Legal!Aid!society!or!participating!in! their!law!school’s!Street!Law!program!teaching!children!about!the!Constitution.!Direct! service!teaches!students!to!take!responsibility!for!their!actions.!Students!also!learn!that! they!can!make!a!difference.! !

Indirect'Experience' Indirect!experiences!are!commonly!implemented!in!schools!because!they!are!easy!to! organize!and!they!involve!students'!working!behind!the!scene.!These!activities!are! centered!in!channeling!resources!to!the!problem!rather!than!working!directly!with!an! individual!who!may!need!the!service.!Often!students!do!not!come!in!contact!with!the! people!they!serve.!Examples!of!indirect!service!include!collecting!food!or!toys!for! disadvantaged!families!and!participating!in!landscaping!a!community!park!or!other! environmental!projects.!Indirect!service!projects!are!generally!performed!by!a!group.!

They!teach!teamwork!and!organizational!skills.! !

Advocacy' Advocacy!as!a!service!experience!requires!students!to!lend!their!voices!and!talents!to! the!effort!to!eliminate!the!causes!of!a!specific!problem!and!to!make!the!public!aware!of! the!problem.!Activities!may!include!making!presentations!to!the!school!and!community! about!relevant!legal!issues!or!distributing!literature!about!the!issues!throughout!the! school.!Students!learn!to!present!their!concerns!clearly,!to!be!concise!in!presenting!their! ideas,!and!to!suggest!feasible!solutions.! !

Community7Based'Research' CommunityRbased!Research!(CBR)!can!be!defined!as!a!partnership!of!students,!faculty,! and!community!partners!who!collaboratively!engage!in!research!with!the!purpose!of! solving!a!pressing!community!problem!or!effecting!social!change.!Typical!CBR!projects! include!faculty,!students!and!community!partners!working!together!to!focus!local! attention!on!pressing!community!needs,!research!and!evaluate!new!programs,!evaluate! and!assess!existing!programs,!or!create!qualitative!and!quantitative!research!tools.! !

' Self7Advocacy' SelfRadvocacy!is!an!individual’s!ability!to!effectively!communicate,!convey,!negotiate!or! assert!his!or!her!own!interests,!desires,!needs!and!rights.!It!involves!making!informed! decisions!and!taking!responsibility!for!those!decisions.!SelfRknowledge!is!the!first!step! towards!advocating!for!one’s!rights.!Individuals!need!to!know!their!strengths,!needs!and! interests!before!they!can!begin!to!advocate!for!themselves.!Individuals!should:!know! and!understand!their!rights!and!responsibilities;!learn!about!their!needs,!strengths!and! weaknesses;!know!how!to!effectively/assertively!communicate!their!needs!and! preferences;!know!how!to!locate!help;!and!be!willing!to!ask!questions!when!something! is!unclear.! !

Systems'Advocacy' Systems!Advocacy!refers!to!advocacy!initiatives!in!the!context!of!organizations/agencies! or!community!that!will!influence!programs!and!practices!to!benefit!others.!Systems!

Advocacy!locates!the!target!of!change!in!the!systemReducational,!correctional,! government!and!other!systems!and!institutions!that!have!direct!and!indirect!impacts!on! constitutions.! !

Policy'Advocacy' Policy!advocacy!refers!to!advocacy!tactics,!strategies!and!initiatives!that!target!changes! to!policies!and!legislation.!These!advocacy!initiatives!seek!to!establish!new!policies,! improve!existing!policies!or!challenge!the!development!of!policies!that!diminish! resources!and!opportunities!for!vulnerable!groups!of!people,!such!as!children!and! youth.!Policy!generally!refers!to!‘social’!policy.!Policy!advocacy!usually!seeks!to!engage! various!sectors!of!the!government,!which!includes:!public!servants,!bureaucrats,! political!appointees,!elected!officials!and!legislators.! !

Legal'Advocacy' In!an!effort!to!promote!change!in!the!laws!and!legal!system,!lawyers!and!legal!advocates! engage!in!legal!advocacy.! '

' Forums' When!planning!a!forum,!the!idea!is!to!create!an!opportunity!for!stakeholders!to!voice! their!views!and!opinions!on!relevant!topics!and!issues.!Forums!should!be!open!to!the! public!and!the!environment!should!be!conducive!to!community!sharing!and!solution! work!through!the!issues!and!brainstorm!on!pertinent!subjects.! !

BLSA!members!should!plan!to!arrive!to!the!event!early,!and!arrange!whatever! technological!accommodations!will!be!needed!for!the!speakers.! !

Documentary'Centered'Events' A!documentary!centered!event!will!require!a!venue!where!the!film!can!be!displayed! before!an!audience.!The!venue!should!be!conducive!to!film!viewing.!Venues!with! projectors!and!movie!screens!are!ideal.!The!venue!should!also!have!seating!to! accommodate!the!targeted!number!of!audience!members.! !

Documentaries!should!be!followed!by!a!discussion!session!in!order!to!gauge!the! reactions!of!the!audience!and!in!order!to!answer!and!address!any!questions!or!concerns! audience!members!may!have!about!the!BLSA!chapter’s!mission!and!the!substance!of!the! film.! !

' Meeting'your'Elected'Official'in'Person' ' Before'The'Meeting' • Plan!your!meeting!carefully,!giving!special!attention!to!the!message!you!wish!to! convey!and!the!impression!you!want!to!make.!Decide!how!many!people!to!take,! and!who!would!best!represent!the!union!or!your!coalition.! !

• Contact!the!official's!staff!to!request!a!meeting.!(If!meeting!with!a!U.S.!senator!or! representative,!it!is!better!to!hold!meetings!in!the!district!when!he!or!she!is!back! from!Washington.!Not!only!will!your!group!not!have!to!travel!far,!the!elected! official!will!not!be!as!hurried!or!distracted!as!he!or!she!would!be!on!Capitol!Hill).!

Give!the!staff!a!clear!idea!of!the!subject!you!wish!to!discuss,!and!let!them!know! what!dates!might!work!and!who/how!many!people!you!intend!to!bring.!Be!sure! to!be!clear!about!who!—!and!how!many!people!—!your!group!represents.!!

• Designate!one!person!to!introduce!the!group!and!moderate!your!group's! participation!in!the!meeting.!Pick!several!people!who!can!stress!the!points!you! wish!to!make,!and!make!sure!others!have!the!information!they!will!need!if!the! elected!official!directs!questions!to!them.!!

Be!prepared!—!do!your!homework,!bring!all!the!materials!you!will!need,!and! present!whatever!materials!you!want!the!official!to!be!able!to!refer!to!in!the! future.!

During'The'Meeting' • Stick!to!the!issues!you!planned!to!discuss;!don't!get!sidetracked.!! !

• If!you!don't!know!the!answer!to!an!elected!official's!question,!say!so,!and!offer! to!provide!that!information!as!a!follow!up!to!your!meeting.!Don't!speculate,! generalize!or!guess;!your!credibility!is!your!currency.!!

• Be!polite!and!positive!—!not!confrontational.!Even!if!the!official!does!not!support! your!position,!always!leave!the!door!open.!!

• Be!political!—!tie!your!interests!to!those!of!your!community!and!the!district!and! state!that!the!official!represents.!You!can!imply!that!adopting!your!position! makes!good!political!sense!for!the!official,!but!never!inject!political!campaigns! and!contributions!into!the!discussion:!it!can!backfire,!and!if!done!on!government! property,!it!can!be!illegal.!
