The 2012 Job Fair and Leadership Retreat Weekend was held on August 17–19, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bethesda, Maryland and was a great success! Friday night kicked off the weekend with the “Extend Your Network” Reception at the hosting hotel. The reception was a great networking event where students, alumni, and employers got the opportunity to meet one another. On Saturday, more than 30 employers met with National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) students from around the country during the Job Fair. The Job Fair also featured a “Go Pro Expo/Table Talk” session where employers and vendors gave students professional advice on searching for jobs and bar exam preparation. The day’s events included an engaging lunch with an attorney panel that focused on how to avoid common mistakes that new attorneys make and featured two-time NBLSA Chair Lt. Mishonda Mosley. Saturday’s activities concluded with the Mid-Atlantic (MABLSA) region’s Chapter Leadership Retreat Kick-Off Social at Union Jack’s in downtown Bethesda. The kickoff served to get local chapter leaders acquainted and enjoy each other’s company over all-you-can-eat crab legs before they got down to the business of the MABLSA retreat. Sunday’s Chapter Leadership Retreat gave local chapter leaders the opportunity to be informed of regional initiatives and programs while talking with the MABLSA Regional Board about opportunities for collaboration on advocacy initiatives and community service projects. The day’s lunch featured an enlightening keynote address by Cachavious English, a former Chair of NBLSA’s Southern Region. Mr. English delivered a message about the importance of mental preparation and commitment in law school that was well-received by attendees. MABLSA extends special thanks to all of the participating employers, including Steptoe & Johnson LLP, whose sponsorship of the Job Fair made the event possible. Other upcoming events for the MABLSA region will include: NBLSA's Annual Congressional Black Caucus Weekend & Charles Hamilton Houston Leadership Retreat, which will take place in the Mid-Atlantic Region in Washington, D.C., from September 19–22! Register at nblsa.org/cbcregistration. A town hall meeting to discuss the impact of Voter ID laws and other forms of voter suppression in the 2012 general election. The town hall will be held on September 29, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Penn State University (University Park) in Carlisle Room 112 and will feature a panel of professors and lawyers who will share their insights on the recent developments in election law.
