Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Cody Buresh, Wabash

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic

quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

Molly Chapman, Denison

Fifty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2013-14 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 33rd time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 67 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2013-14 academic year, 223 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

KENYON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 2015 NORTH COAST MEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference men’s tennis coaches have once again unanimously selected Kenyon as the preseason favorite for the league title based on balloting by the conference coaches. Kenyon was tabbed the unanimous favorite after collecting all nine first-place votes cast by league coaches for 81 total points. DePauw, which has finished as the conference runner-up in 2013 and 2014, finished second in the poll behind Kenyon with 72 points. Denison checked in at third with 61 points, followed by Oberlin (51), Allegheny (43), Wabash (33), Ohio Wesleyan (27), Wooster (19) and Wittenberg (18). The Lords, who have won eight-straight NCAC championships and 17 all-time, will be led by a strong senior class this spring, highlighted by the 2014 NCAC Men’s Player of the Year, Wade Heerboth (Tucson, AZ/Foothill). Heerboth finished the 2014 campaign with an overall singles record of 20-6, which included a 12-4 mark at the top flight. He was also successful in doubles competition, where he compiled an overall 20-5 record pairing with two different teammates between the second and third flights. Senior Tim Rosensteel (East Windsor, NJ/Peddie) earned a pair of All-NCAC citations last spring, collecting second-team singles honors with an overall record of 16-11, and landing on the second team in doubles competition after posting a 14-12 record in the top flight with junior Sam Geier (Carmel, IN/Park Tudor). Geier will also complement Heerboth in singles competition this spring after he was an All-NCAC, first-team selection with an overall record of 24-11 in the second and third positions. Six-time NCAC Coach of the Year award winner Scott Thielke will return for his 20th season with the Lords. In 19 seasons at the helm of the KC men’s tennis program, Thielke owns a career record of 325-107 and has guided the Lords to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, including an active streak of 13-straight years (2002-14).

DEPAUW SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 31ST NORTH COAST WOMEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference women’s tennis coaches have predicted that DePauw will hoist the conference championship trophy for the fourth year in a row this spring following preseason balloting by the league coaches. The Tigers were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting seven of the possible eight first-place votes cast and 63 total points. Denison, winners of 11 conference championships all-time, collected the final first-place vote and finished second with 57 points. Kenyon and Oberlin tied for third in the poll with 44 points each, while Allegheny rounded out the topfive in fifth with 28 points. Rounding out places sixth through eight was Ohio Wesleyan (25), Wooster (19) and Wittenberg (8). DePauw, which has made 10-straight team appearances in the NCAA Tournament, is once again loaded with talent this spring as the Tigers return four All-NCAC performers from a year ago. Senior Maggie MacPhail (Indianapolis, IN/Park Tudor) headlines the list of returners as a three-time, All-NCAC, first-team selection. She finished the 2014 season with a an overall singles record of 14-14, including a mark of 7-11 in the No. 1 position. Classmate Claire Marshall (Marietta, GA/ George Walton) also earned first-team laurels last spring after posting a singles record of 20-7, which included a 4-1 mark at the top flight and a 10-5 mark in the second position. MacPhail and Marshall also earned All-NCAC recognition in doubles competition last year. MacPhail boasted a 29-8 doubles record, including a mark of 11-5 in the top flight, while Marshall combined for an overall doubles record of 25-8. The Tigers will also look for production this spring from the junior duo of Carolyn Huerth (Fontana, WI/Prairie Ridge) and Taylor Mahr (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) after they were both All-NCAC, second-team selections in 2014. Scott Riggle once again returns to the sidelines for his 15th season at the helm of the DPU women’s tennis program. In 14 total season’s in Greencastle, Riggle has compiled an overall women’s record of 252-100.
