Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Mason Espinosa,

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fourty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports competed in the NCAA postAli Ross, DePauw season during the 2012-13 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 32nd time in program history. In addition, the DePauw women’s basketball team raised the Walnut & Broze trophy for the second time in program history, making them the only women’s basketball team in conference history to win a women’s basketball national title. Conference members have accumulated 66 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 221 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Wittenberg, which posted its second-straight perfect NCAC regular season in 2013 before falling to the Fighting Scots in the NCAC Tournament semifinal, was selected to finish second in the poll after garnering two first-place votes and 72 points. The final first-place vote went to Denison as the Big Red finished third int he poll with 63 points. Wooster finished fourth in the poll with 56 points, followed by Allegheny (48), Ohio Wesleyan (34) and Oberlin (27), DePauw (21) and Hiram (10). 2014 marks the first time That the NCAC will have a separate regular season and tournament champions. The Kenyon offense returns four of its top six scorers from a year ago, including reigning NCAC Newcomer of the Year, sophomore Jane Symmes (Concord, NH/Concord) who recorded 60 total points (48g, 12a). Seniors Alex Bair (Darien, CT/Darien) and Amy Morgan (Mt. Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley) are back as well, and will provide experience for the offense after collecting 58 points (47g, 11a) and 28 points (24g 4a) last season, respectively. Head coach Meredith Buzzi, who is the winningest coach in program history, returns to the sidelines to lead the Ladies this spring. In six seasons at the helm, Buzzi owns an overall record of 65-30. Denison leads all NCAC squads with 17 conference championships in 29 seasons (1985-1994, ‘96 ,1999-‘01, ‘06 and 201112). Wooster has collected six conference titles (2002-04, ‘07, 2009-10), while Oberlin has earned three (1995, 1997-98), Ohio Wesleyan has garnered two (2005 and ‘08) and Kenyon one (2013). -NCAC-

NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ALL-DECADE TEAM Allegheny’s Jensen Paterson (2008-11) and Denison’s Quinn Simmons (200508) spearhead an impressive list of players selected to the North Coast Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary Women’s Lacrosse All-Decade Team. Paterson and Simmons were the only two players selected to the all-decade team to have earned four-straight All-NCAC first-team nods in the last 10 years. Jensen Paterson {left} earned All-NCAC first-team accolades from 2008-11 and capped off her career by being named the NCAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2011. Paterson’s 2011 season still stands as the top individual scoring season in league history after she netted 74 goals and dished out 38 assists for 112 total points. In addition, Paterson and current Wittenberg head coach Beth Hemminger (2000-03) share the NCAC’s career record for points in a career at 300. In 65 career games with the Gators, Paterson reached her point total by scoring 221 goals and passing out 79 assists. Paterson was also named a first-team All-American by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) in 2011. She remains the only player in Allegheny history to earn an All-American certificate from the IWLCA. Quinn Simmons {right} competed in the early portion of last decade as she picked up the NCAC Newcomer of the year honor in 2005 and then concluded her career in 2008 by being named the NCAC Offensive Player of the Year. In 59 total games with the Big Red, Simmons netted 138 goals and handed out 18 assists for 156 total points, while also accumulating 132 draw controls and 102 groundballs. Her draw control total is second on DU’s all-time list, behind only fellow NCAC all-decade honoree selection Carly Tschantz’s (2009-12) 315. There were seven additional student-athletes named to the NCAC women’s lacrosse 30th anniversary all-decade team that earned first-team all-conference citations in three different seasons in the last decade, including Kenyon defender Brigid Donahue (2009-11), Denison defender Molly Lamdin (2004-06), Kenyon goalie Chase Kreuter (2008-10), Allegheny attack Ashley Hughes (2005-07), Kenyon attack Leah Sack (2010-13), Wooster attack Megan Sward (2004-06) and Wooster midfielder Clare Nelson-Johnson (2011-13). Five of the seven earned an NCAC Player of the Year award during their careers with Offensive Player of the Year accolades going to Sack (2013) and Sward (2004), while Donahue (2011), Kreuter (2010) and Lamdin (2005) garnered the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year honor. While no current women’s lacrosse student-athletes were named to the all-decade team, first-year Allegheny head coach Ashley Hughes becomes the first current head coach in the league to be named to an NCAC 30th Anniversary All-Decade team. The North Coast Athletic Conference is celebrating its 30th playing season by selecting All-Decade teams in nearly every championship sport. Players from the first 10 years of play were selected in 1993-94, while players who competed from 1993-2002 were named to the 20th Anniversary All-Decade team. All current head coaches were asked to vote, as were some former coaches and administrators. Four different schools collected an NCAC Women’s Lacrosse championship in the past 10 years. Wooster opened the decade by claiming the 2004 crown, followed by Ohio Wesleyan in 2005, Denison in 2006, Wooster in 2007 and Ohio Wesleyan in 2008. There were consecutive strings of back-to-back streaks over the next four seasons with the Fighting Scots hoisting the trophy from 2009-10 and the Big Red earning the league title from 2011-12, while Kenyon is the defending league champion.
