Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Jane Hopkinson-Wood, Wittenberg

2

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic

quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

Sean Kiley, Oberlin

Sixty-one teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2014-15 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 34th time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 69 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2014-15 academic year, 219 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

KENYON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 2016 NCAC MEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference men’s tennis coaches have once again unanimously selected Kenyon as the preseason favorite for the league title based on balloting by conference coaches. Kenyon was tabbed the unanimous favorite after collecting all nine first-place votes cast by the league coaches for 81 total points. DePauw, which has finished as the conference runner-up in each of the last three years, finished in the poll behind the Lords with 68 points. Denison placed third in the poll with 64 points, followed by Oberlin (57), Allegheny (38), Wooster (29), Wabash (28), Ohio Wesleyan (22) and Wittenberg (18). The Lords, who have won nine-straight NCAC titles and 18 all-time, will be relying on leadership both on and off the court this season from its two-member senior class of Sam Geier (Carmel, IN/Park Tudor) and Robert Turlington (Rochester, MN/ Lourdes). Geier earned a pair of All-NCAC citations last spring, collecting first-team singles honors with an overall record of 14-6 in the top two flights, and landing on the first team in doubles competition after posting a 9-8 record in the top flight. Turlington, who was an All-NCAC second team selection last spring in singles with an overall record of 15-5 record between the second and third flights, will be expected to fill one of the top singles positions for the Lords this season. In his 20th season at the helm of the KC men’s tennis program, head coach Scott Thielke will be relying on a youthful roster to fill the remaining singles positions and lock down slots on the three doubles teams. Thielke owns a career record of 345-113 at Kenyon and has guided the Lords to 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, which includes an active streak of 14-straight years (2002-15). Kenyon leads the NCAC with 18 championships in 31 years (1989, 1991-93, ‘95, 2002-05, 2007-15), including winning 13 of the last 14 crowns. Denison is not far off in the all-time title count with 12 championships (1985-89, ‘94, 1997-01, ‘06), while Wooster has captured two outright titles (1990, ‘96) and four all-time. Denison and Wooster shared the inaugural title in 1985, while Denison, Kenyon and Wooster were declared tri-champions in 1989.

DENISON PICKED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR THE 2016 NCAC WOMEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference women’s tennis coaches have predicted that Denison will regain its spot at the top of the league standings for the first time since 2011 following preseason balloting by league coaches. The Big Red were selected to dethrone DePauw for the 2016 women’s tennis championship after collecting five of the possible eight first-place votes cast for 61 total points. DePauw, the four-time defending NCAC champion, finished right on DU’s heels with 56 total points and the final three first-place votes. Kenyon checked in at third with 49 points, followed by Oberlin (39), Allegheny (32), Ohio Wesleyan (23), Wooster (17) and Wittenberg (11). Denison enters the season with a talented roster from top to bottom that features three returning All-NCAC singles performers from 2015. Senior Taylor Hawkins (Raleigh, NC/Saint Mary’s School) highlights the list of returners as a two-time, All-NCAC, first-team singles selection. Hawkins finished the 2015 season with a 12-8 record in the top singles flight and also garnered first-team laurels in doubles competition with classmate Meg Chiumento (Malvern, PA/Agnes Irwin School) after the duo posted a 10-8 mark in the top position. Chiumento also landed on the second team in singles a year ago after combining for a 17-3 record between the top-four singles positions. After landing on the All-NCAC singles first team a year ago as a freshman, Courtney Brown (Dublin, OH/Bishop Watterson) will again be expected to produce for the Big Red this spring in one of the top-three singles positions. Peter Burling will return to the sidelines for his 19th season at the helm of the DU women’s tennis program. In 18 total years in Granville, Burling has compiled an overall women’s record of 289-115 and has guided the Big Red into the NCAA Tournament on 11 different occasions, which included a run to the national semifinals in 2008. In 31 years of North Coast women’s tennis competition, four schools have claimed league championships: Allegheny took the first title in 1985, then Kenyon went on a run to claim 15 of the next 16 titles, interrupted only by Denison’s first title in 1994. The Big Red again broke the Ladies’ streak in 2002, and reeled off 10-straight titles (2002-11) until DePauw topped the field in each of the last four seasons. Kenyon leads the way with 15 North Coast titles, followed by Denison (11), DePauw (4) and Allegheny (1).
