Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Mason Espinosa,

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fourty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports competed in the NCAA postAli Ross, DePauw season during the 2012-13 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 32nd time in program history. In addition, the DePauw women’s basketball team raised the Walnut & Broze trophy for the second time in program history, making them the only women’s basketball team in conference history to win a women’s basketball national title. Conference members have accumulated 66 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 221 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

OHIO WESLEYAN TOPS PRESEASON POLL AS NORTH COAST PREPARES FOR 30TH MEN’S SOCCER CAMPAIGN CLEVELAND -- Ohio Wesleyan has once again been selected as the preseason favorite based on balloting from league coaches heading into the 30th North Coast men’s soccer season. The Battling Bishops, who are coming off their fifth consecutive NCAC championship and NCAA-record 35th Division III playoff appearance, earned five of the first-place votes cast by league coaches to finish on top of the poll with 91 total points. DePauw, the 2012 NCAC Tournament champions, earned four first-place votes and finished second in the poll with 86 points, while Kenyon rounded out the top-three in third-place with 82 points and the final first-place vote. Allegheny checked in at No. 4 with 62 points, while Denison also cracked the top-five in fifth-place with 51 points. Oberlin earned the sixth position with 47 points, followed by Hiram in seventh with 41 points, Wabash in eighth with 24 points, Wooster in ninth with 23 points and Wittenberg in 10th with 21 points. Ohio Wesleyan enters the 2013 season under the direction of head coach Jay Martin for the 37th consecutive season. In 36 seasons at the helm, Martin has compiled the most wins in college soccer history (all divisions) as he owns a career record of 621-118-54. The Bishops return a wealth of talent from the 2012 squad that finished the season with an overall record of 13-3-5 and a mark of 7-1-1 against conference opponents. Leading the charge offensively for OWU this fall will be the underclassmen combo of junior Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy Orange) and sophomore Brian Schaefer (Chatham, NJ/Chatham), while the defensive unit will be looking for a new leader in goal with the graduation of three-time All-NCAC selection Paul Hendricks. Bloecher paced OWU’s offense a year ago by leading the team in both goals (12) and assists (6) for 30 total points, while Schaefer is the next top returner after netting five goals and dishing out three assists last fall. The only goalie on the roster with playing experience is junior Colin Beemiller (Pickerington, OH/ North), who appeared in three games in 2012, allowing no goals and hauling in three saves in 111 minutes of action. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.

NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ALL-DECADE TEAM The North Coast Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary All-Decade men’s soccer team is highlighted by four student-athletes who garnered Player of the Year honors in back-to-back years, including Wittenberg’s Matt Borland ‘08, Wooster’s Brian Conaway ‘05, Kenyon’s Jeremy Fischer ‘08 and Ohio Wesleyan’s Tyler Wall ‘10. Wall put together one of the most successful careers over the last decade as he is one of only two players on the list to earn first-team All-NCAC honors four years in a row in the decade. He capped off his career with back-to-back Offensive Player of the Year awards in 2009 and ‘10. During his four-year career with the Battling Bishops, Wall was one of the top offensive players in the league as he totaled 115 points (45g, 25a), including a 43-point outburst in 2010 when he netted 19 goals and dished out five assists. Tyler’s younger brother Travis Wall ‘11, the 2011 NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, is also a member of the Men’s Soccer All-Decade team, while his older sister, Sarah Wall ‘05, highlighted the NCAC 30th Anniversary All-Decade Team in women’s soccer. Borland, a four-time All-NCAC selection, capped off his career at Wittenberg by being named the NCAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 and ‘08. The two-time All-NSCAA All-American selection was the Tigers’ top offensive player during his four-year career as he netted 27 goals and dished out 29 assists for 83 total points. During his four year career, Wittenberg compiled an overall record of 42-22-12, which included back-to-back appearances in the NCAC Tournament in 2007 and ‘08 and an at-large invitation to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2008. Conaway was one of the top players in the league at the beginning of the last decade as he was an All-NCAC first-team selection in 2003, ‘04 and ‘05, and earned the NCAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2004 and ‘05. Conaway totaled 80 points (33g, 14a) in three years of competition last decade and was a key contributor in Wooster’s back-to-back NCAC titles in 2003 and ‘04. From 2003 to ‘05 Conaway and the Fighting Scots posted an overall record of 34-9-7, including an impressive mark of 20-5-2 against NCAC opponents. Fischer shined on the defensive side of the ball during his career with the Lords as he was twice named NCAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 and ‘09. Fischer experienced his most success on the field with Kenyon in his sophomore season as the 2007 Lords squad captured the outright NCAC title with a record of 7-1-1 against NCAC foes. Although he spent the majority of his career as the leader of the KC defensive unit, Fischer also manufactured some offensive production for the Lords with 10 career goals and four career assists for 24 total points. In addition to Wall, Kenyon’s Felix Hoffman ‘10 and Allegheny’s Eric Sloan ‘07 were also four-time All-NCAC selections in the last decade. Hoffman, the 2007 Newcomer of the Year, was a four-time first-team honoree, while Sloan, the 2004 Newcomer of the Year and ‘07 Defensive Player of the Year, earned first-team laurels in ‘04, ‘06 & ‘07, and was a secondteam selection in ‘05. Ohio Wesleyan proved to be the NCAC’s premier program over the last decade of play as the Battling Bishops won a share of eight NCAC titles (2004, ‘05, ‘06, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10, ‘11 & ‘12), were crowned NCAC Tournament champions on five different occasions (2003, ‘05, ‘07, ‘08 & ‘10) and got to the pinnacle of NCAA Div. III men’s soccer in 2011 as national champions. The Battling Bishops enjoyed their success last decade under the leadership of legendary head coach Jay Martin, who is the winningest coach in college men’s soccer history (all divisions) with 621 wins. Martin collected 28 percent of his career wins in the last 10 years as the Battling Bishops posted an overall record of 174-27-21 from 2003-12.
