Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic Molly Martorella, Oberlin life, rather than compete

with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Sixty-three teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all ten members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC added Craig Osterbrock, Wittenberg another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Denison claimed the men’s title for the second consecutive season. In addition, Wittenberg claimed the leagues’ first-ever volleyball title and Ohio Wesleyan garnered the second men’s soccer title in league and school history. Conference members have accumulated 65 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 157 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DENISON VOTED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 29TH NORTH COAST MEN’S LACROSSE SEASON CLEVELAND -- North Coast Athletic Conference coaches tabbed Denison as the preseason favorite in balloting in the annual preseason coaches’ poll.

The Big Red, who captured their second-consecutive NCAC title last season after posting a 5-0 league mark and a 15-2 overall record, earned all eight first-place votes cast by league coaches to total 64 points. Ohio Wesleyan, which has competed in the NCAA Division III Tournament each of the last eight seasons, is predicted to finish second this season after accumulating 55 on the coaches’ poll. Kenyon landed in the third position with 49 points, followed by Wittenberg (37), Wooster (33), Oberlin (26), DePauw (15) and Hiram (9). DU did lose a majority of its offensive production from a year ago due to graduation; however, the squad does return its leading goal scorer in junior Eddie Vita (Coronado, CA/Coronado). Vita finished the 2012 season with 44 goals and 15 assists for 59 total points, while also corralling 34 ground balls and causing nine turnovers. Defensively, first-team All-NCAC selection Tommy Harrison (Westford, MA/ Rivers/Kimball Union) and junior long pole Austin Campbell (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) are back after helping DU limit the opposition to just 6.1 goals per game in 2012. Junior Chip Phillips (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes) was one of the nation’s best faceoff specialists last year and he is back after winning 66 percent of his draws in 2012. Denison head coach Mike Caravana is in his fifth season of his second tenure at the helm of the Big Red program. In 19 total years as head coach of the Big Red, he holds a career record of 195-78 to go along with eight NCAC titles and 12 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament. In 1999 and 2001, Denison advanced to the semifinal round of the national tournament under Caravana’s direction. Last year was Denison’s 12th NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearance. Ohio Wesleyan leads all North Coast teams with 18 championships in 28 years. Denison follows with 13, Wittenberg has two while Wooster and Kenyon each can boast one championship. The NCAC has had tri-champs three times, first in 2000 when the Big Red, Bishops and Lords shared the title, then in 2004, when Denison, OWU and Wooster each had a piece of the crown, only to have it happen again in 2011 when Denison, Wittenberg and Ohio Wesleyan shared the top spot. The conference also saw Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg share the conference crown three seasons ago. With the addition of the Hiram and DePauw men’s lacrosse programs in 2013, the NCAC will introduce a men’s lacrosse tournament at year’s end with the winner receiving the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Div. III Tournament. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
