Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should Molly Martorella, Oberlin

enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Sixty-three teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all ten members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division Craig Osterbrock, Wittenberg III swimming championship as Denison claimed the men’s title for the second consecutive season. In addition, Wittenberg claimed the leagues’ first-ever volleyball title and Ohio Wesleyan garnered the second men’s soccer title in league and school history. Conference members have accumulated 65 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 157 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DEPAUW SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 29TH NCAC WOMEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference women’s tennis coaches have selected DePauw as the preseason favorite based on balloting by the league coaches. The Tigers, who won the NCAC title in their first year in the league last season, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting seven of the possible eight first-place votes cast and 63 total points. Denison, winners of 11 conference titles all-time, garnered the final first-place vote and finished second with 57 points. Kenyon finished third with 47 points, followed by Oberlin (36), Allegheny (34), Wittenberg (27), Ohio Wesleyan (14) and Wooster (10). DePauw, which made its 11th appearance in the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Tournament a year ago, will rely on a youthful roster this season with just one senior on the squad. However, reigning NCAC Newcomer of the Year and first-team All-NCAC selection sophomore Maggie MacPhail (Indianapolis, IN/Park Tudor) returns to the lineup in 2013 after posting an overall singles record of 23-8 and a doubles mark of 22-10 a year ago. In addition, the Tigers will look for production from a pair of student-athletes that garnered All-NCAC recognition a year ago in junior Meg Crowley (Barrington, IL/Barrington) and sophomore Claire Marshall (Marietta, GA/George Walton). Crowley earned second-team laurels last season in both singles and doubles, while Marshall was an honorable mention singles selection and a second-team honoree in doubles. Crowley and Marshall combined to post a 15-11 record at the No. 2 doubles position, while Crowley was 15-11 in the third singles slot and Marshall posted a 17-8 record while playing in positions three, four and five. Leading the DePauw women for his 13th season will be head coach Scott Riggle. In 12 season’s at the helm, Riggle’s women’s teams have compiled an overall record of 214-87, including a 18-7 mark last year in their inaugural season in the NCAC. In 28 years of North Coast women’s tennis competition, four schools have claimed championships: Allegheny took the first one in 1985, then Kenyon went on a run to claim 15 of the next 16 titles, interrupted only by Denison’s first title in 1994. The Big Red again broke the Ladies’s streak in 2002, and reeled off 10-straight titles until DePauw ended that string last season. Kenyon has a total of 15 North Coast titles to Denison’s 11, while Allegheny and DePauw have one apiece.

KENYON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 29TH NCAC MEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference men’s tennis coaches have unanimously selected Kenyon as the preseason favorite based on balloting by the league coaches. The Lords, six-time defending NCAC champions, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting all nine first-place votes and 81 total points. Denison, last year’s runner-up in the conference tournament, finished behind Kenyon in the poll with 69 points. DePauw rounded out the top three in the poll in third-place with 64 points, followed by Wittenberg (55), Allegheny (40), Wabash (38), Oberlin (25), Ohio Wesleyan (17) and Wooster (16). Kenyon, which finished as the national runner-up in Division III a year ago after falling to Emory in the title match by a 5-3 margin, returns six All-NCAC performers from a year ago, led by seniors Paul Burgin (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) and C.J. Williams (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher’s). Burgin, a first-team selection in 2012, returns as the Lords’ top singles player after posting an overall record of 24-10 a year ago, while Williams earned second-team laurels in both singles and doubles after finishing with a singles record of 23-10 and a doubles mark of 24-9. Additionally, a pair of sophomores returns to the lineup after earning All-NCAC recognition in 2012: Mike Razumovsky (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) and Wade Heerboth (Tucson, AZ/Foothill). Razumovsky earned first-team laurels in singles and second-team honors in doubles after posting respective records of 24-7 and 25-6, playing mainly in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Heerboth closed out the season with a 24-8 singles mark after playing in several different slots in the lineup. Leading the KC men in his 18th season is five-time NCAC Coach of the Year Scott Thielke. Prior to this season, his coaching record at Kenyon is 281-95 with the men’s team and 280-124 with the women’s team. Thielke has led the Lords to 12 NCAA appearances, including an active streak of 11 consecutive showings (2002-12). Kenyon leads the NCAC with 15 championships in 28 years (1989, 1991-93, 1995, 2002-05, 2007-12), including winning 10 of the last 11 crowns. Denison is not far off in the all-time title count as it has earned 12 championships (1985-89, 1994, 1997-2001, 2006), while Wooster has captured two outright titles (1990, 1996) and four all-time. Denison and Wooster shared the inaugural title in 1985, while Denison, Kenyon and Wooster were declared tri-champions in 1989.
