Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Cody Buresh, Wabash

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic

quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

Molly Chapman, Denison

Fifty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2013-14 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 33rd time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 67 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2013-14 academic year, 223 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

OHIO WESLEYAN TOPS PRESEASON POLL AS NCAC PREPARES FOR 31ST MEN’S SOCCER CAMPAIGN Ohio Wesleyan has once again been selected as the preseason favorite based on balloting from league coaches heading into the 31st North Coast men’s soccer season. The Battling Bishops, who are coming off their sixth consecutive NCAC championship and NCAA-record 36th Division III playoff appearance, earned seven of the first-place votes cast by league coaches to finish on top of the poll with 97 total points. Kenyon, coming off its trip to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament, earned the final three first-place votes and finished second in the poll with 92 points, while DePauw rounded out the top-three in third-place with 77 total points. Coming off its first-ever bid into the NCAA Tournament a year ago, Oberlin checked in at fourth with 73 points, while Denison cracked the top-five in fifth-place with 58 points. Allegheny earned the sixth position with 45 points, followed by Hiram in seventh with 38 points, Wooster in eighth with 29 points, Wabash in ninth with 23 points and Wittenberg in 10th with 18 points. Ohio Wesleyan enters the 2014 season under the direction of head coach Jay Martin for the 38th consecutive season. In 37 seasons at the helm, Martin has compiled the most wins in college soccer history (all divisions) as he owns a career record of 640-119-57. The Bishops return a wealth of talent from the 2013 squad that finished the season with an overall record of 19-1-3 and a mark of 7-0-2 against conference opponents. Leading the charge offensively for OWU this fall will be the NCAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2013, senior Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy Orange) who accounted for 13 goals, four assists and 30 total points. Juniors Brian Schaefer (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) and Evan Lee (Toledo, OH/St. Johns) join Bloecher in 2014 as the trio combined for 30 goals, 14 assists and 74 total points to lead the Bishops to their sixth unbeaten regular season record in school history last fall. Defensively senior Colin Beemiller (Pickerington, OH/North) returns in net after leading the NCAC last year with a 0.74 goals against average and finishing second in shutouts (8.2).
