Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Cody Buresh, Wabash

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic

quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

Molly Chapman, Denison

Fifty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2013-14 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 33rd time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 67 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2013-14 academic year, 223 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Allegheny.................................................................23 Hiram.......................................................................23 first-place votes in () WABASH aims for its eighth league title in program history and its first since 2011 as the Little Giants return 16 starters from the 2013 squad that finished in second place in the final league standings with an 8-1 mark against league foes. Senior AllAmerican Cody Buresh returns to lead the defensive unit that topped all of Division III a year ago in yards allowed (220.7 ypg) and turnover margin (2.4 per game). Buresh and fellow senior linebacker AJ Akinribade combined for 104 tackles, 15.5 sacks and 29.5 tackles-for-loss in 2013, while the cornerback duo of junior Eddie Cmehil and sophomore Delon Pettiford combined for seven of the Little Giants’ league-leading 18 interceptions last fall. Offensively, junior quarterback Michael Putko expects to take a big leap in his second year under center after completing 136-of-210 pass attempts last year for 1,702 yards and 14 touchdowns. While Putko aims for improved passing statistics, the Wabash rushing attack is primed to steal the show this season, highlighted by the return of senior Tyler Holmes and junior Mason Zurek, who both saw their 2013 season’s cut short due to knee injuries. In addition, the junior duo of Wes Brown and Tre Taylor will anchor the offensive line, while senior Houston Hodges will again show his versatility as a two-way starter at wide receiver and defensive back. WITTENBERG, which claimed its 12th NCAC title in 2013 after posting a perfect 9-0 record in league play, does return 39 letter winners but must replace nearly its entire aerial assault unit from 2013 with the graduation of record-setting quarterback Reed Florence and his top three targets. Junior signal caller Zack Jenkins is expected to take the reigns under center for the Tigers after scoring five touchdowns last year, while juniors Sean Gary and Jimmy Dehnke are a formidable force in the backfield after combining for 1,755 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2013. The Tigers also return three starters on the offensive line, led by senior All-American tackle Aaron Coeling, while senior wideout Zac Wilson is the top receiving threat this season after hauling in 37 receptions for 571 yards and three scores a year ago. Senior linebackers Evan Killilea and Nick Gibson anchor the defensive unit as the leading returning tacklers from a year ago, while junior Josh Bannick and sophomore Brady Vanover will look to plug the holes on the d-line. Senior Victor Banjo and junior Ryan Myers will again haunt opposing quarterbacks from the cornerback position, while the kicking game will solid once again with the return of junior Evan Grissom. DENISON looks to build up its success from last year as the Big Red reached new heights by posting an overall record of 7-3 and finishing fourth in the NCAC with a 6-3 mark. It marked the most wins in a single season at DU since the 1986 squad captured the league title (9-1, 6-0). Three senior All-NCAC performers highlight 15 returning starters for the Big Red this season - quarterback Brandon Sklenar, running back Colin Morris and punter Andy Shaw. In his first season under center, Sklenar established himself as one of the most dynamic offensive players in the league as he accumulated 2,888 yards of total offense (2,267 passing, 621 rushing) and accounted for 25 touchdowns (17 passing, 8 rushing). Morris added an additional 596 yards on the ground with a team-leading nine rushing touchdowns. Senior offensive linemen Tom Demers and Nathan Bartell also return up front for the Big Red. Defensively, the Big Red returns a plethora of talent in the backfield but must replace all four starters on the line. Sophomore cornerback Andrew Baird is DU’s leading returner tackler from a year ago with 75 stops, while senior linebacker Pat Foley and junior cornerback Lucas Romick are second and third on that same list with 58 and 57 tackles, respectively. WOOSTER emerged as a contender in the NCAC in 2013 after finishing third in the league standings with a 7-2 record and an overall mark of 7-3. The Fighting Scots return 17 starters from a year ago, including nine on offense, seven on defense and one special teams player. Fifth-year senior quarterback Richard Barnes thrived in Wooster’s new-look offense last fall as he threw for a school-record 2,243 yards, rushed for a career-high 612 yards and accounted for 25 touchdowns (16 passing, nine rushing). Senior running back Sean Hackel led the NCAC is rushing last fall with 1,097 yards, while the squad also returns three starting receivers in senior Justin Rice, junior Keir Pace and sophomore Darrian Owens. The trio combined to collect 103 receptions for 1,467 yards and 14 touchdowns. Senior linebacker Mitchell Czerniak and senior strong safety Brandon James lead the list of returning defenders. Czerniak led the 2013 squad with 104 tackles, while James pulled down five interceptions to increase his career total to 10.

DEPAUW won four of its final six games to close out the 2013 season and hopes to carry that momentum onto the gridiron this fall in Indiana. The Tigers return 38 letter winners, including seven starters on offense and six on defense. Sophomore Matt Hunt emerged as the squads starting signal caller last year after finishing the season with 1,871 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. His top targets also return in senior tight end J.D. Robinson and junior wide receiver Connor Jeffers, while sophomore Amen Galley is expected to get a majority of the carries in the backfield. The offensive line is a strong point for the Tigers squad as four of the five starters from 2013 return to the trenches this fall, including junior left tackle Hunter Logan, junior left guard Kody Bontreger, junior center Taylor Shellman and senior right tackle Daniel Howard. Sophomore nose tackle Michael Mitsch returns to anchor the defensive line, while junior strong safety Adam Folta is the top returning tackler from a year ago with 77 stops. OHIO WESLEYAN look to return to NCAC championship contention in 2014. Six starters return on each side of the ball for head coach Tom Watts’ third year at the helm of the Bishops program. Senior tight end Calvin Cagney, who ranked second in the league in receptions last fall, returns, as does senior running back Kevin Herman, who has led OWU in rushing in each of the last three seasons. Also back is the wide receiver duo of senior Erik Wall and junior Zane Kieffer, while the line will be anchored by senior center Joey Reinhardt and senior guard Vincent Marquez. Defensively, senior end Chase Workman and junior nose tackle Dominic Wilson are back on the line, senior linebackers Morgan McBride and Chris Mondon also return along with both cornerbacks in junior Roemello Cook and sophomore Eric Beale. Senior Miles MacKenzie, who holds OWU’s single game, season and career records for field goals and points scored kicking, is also back to handle both the kicking and punting duties for the Bishops. KENYON, which has gone 10-10 in the last two seasons combined, will look to continue its upward trend as 30 returning lettermen will report to camp in Gambier this fall. While there are a lot of question marks on the defensive side of the ball, the junior duo of defensive end Marquis Johnson and free safety Alexander McQuiston will provide veteran leadership for the Lords as returning starters. Johnson tallied 20 tackles and 1.0 sack a year ago, while McQuiston made 36 stops and collected one interception. Junior quarterback Jake Bates, who returned as the Lords’ signal caller last season after suffering a season-ending thumb injury in 2012, completed 104-of195 pass attempts for 1,240 yards and eight touchdowns. The top two receiving targets also return for Bates this fall in sophomores Brian Hunca and Jibri McLean. The duo combined to haul in 62 receptions for 810 yards and four touchdowns a year ago. The Lords also expect strong production from a stable of veteran running backs, including senior Brandon January and the junior duo of Casey Beaudouin and Blake Calcei. OBERLIN ushers in a new era of Yeomen football this fall with a first-year head coach and a new stadium. Jay Anderson takes over the reigns of the program after serving as the squads’ defensive coordinator in 2013. OC returns 25 letter winners, but is also looking to build depth in the program with 25 freshman reporting to camp. Junior quarterback Lucas Poggiali is a dual-threat attack for the Yeomen as he passed for 1,509 yards with eight scores last year and added 255 rushing yards with four additional touchdowns. Junior running back Blake Buckhannon provides another dual threat option for Oberlin as he racked up 1,281 all-purpose yards (369 rushing, 296 receiving, 516 returns) in 10 games last season. The Yeomen’s defensive unit is young but does boast seven returning starters. Junior end C.J. Ihle looks to build upon a strong sophomore season that saw him lead the team in both tackles-for-loss (14.0) and sacks (7.5), while sophomore linebacker Justin Bute is the squads leading returning tackler from a year ago with 57 stops. ALLEGHENY enters the 2014 campaign with 18 returning starters and 45 returning lettermen. Sophomore Jon Nigro is expected to take the majority of snaps under center this season after he threw for 938 yards and four scores in 2013, while junior Kyle Smith will also take snaps under center after finishing second on the team in rushing last year with 195 yards and one touchdown. The offensive line will be anchored by senior tackles Jesse Battaglia and Joe Grecek along with junior guard Zach Harvey. The Gators also return two of their top three tacklers from last fall in senior safeties Cody Stolar and Raysean Glenn. The duo combined for 138 tackles and six pass breakups, while senior tackle Ryan Sherry tallied a team-high 30 sacks and 6.0 tackles-for-loss. In addition, junior Punter Chris Bourne returns to the fold this season after averaging 37.5 yards per punt last fall. HIRAM opens the 2014 season with high expectations as it will field the largest squad in program history with 140 players, including 75 returners from a year ago. After suffering a season-ending injury in 2013, senior quarterback Rob Partridge will once again assume the signal caller role for the Terriers this fall. Several other key players return to the offensive unit, including lineman Kyle Bates, tight end Christian Dowdy, wide receiver Nate Eaton and running back David Perkins. Defensively, Hiram will rely on the talented sophomore duo of defensive tackle Zayd Mabin and linebacker Kyle Burchett. Burchett is the teams top returning tackler from a year ago with 69 stops, while Mabin tallied 8.0 tackles-for-loss and 1.0 sack. The Terriers made great strides in the special teams unit in 2013, finishing in the top-four in the conference in nearly every statistical category. Senior Greg Klisuric will again handle the kicking and punting duties, while Tevin Weaver is expected to be the top return man.

Allegheny will have plenty of experience back as the Gators look to rebound from a disappointing 2013 campaign with 45 lettermen and a total of 18 starters slated to return to Meadville for head coach Mark Matlak’s 13th season at the helm. Offensively, the Gators will welcome back their top receiver from 2013 in senior Andrew Niklaus (39 rec/373 yds/2 TD), their leading rusher in junior Nick Deichler (90 att/383 yds/2 TD), and a pair of quarterbacks who saw extensive action under center in sophomore Jon Nigro and junior Kyle Smith. Nigro received the bulk of the work, throwing for 938 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman, while Smith finished as the team’s secondleading rusher, running for 195 yards and a score. Jesse Battaglia, a three-year starter at left tackle, will look to anchor the line, which also returns starters in right guard Joe Grecek and left guard Zach Harvey. On defense, two of the top three tacklers from 2013 are back in senior safeties Cody Stolar and Raysean Glenn, who combined for 140 stops and six passes defended. Senior tackle Ryan Sherry tallied a team-high three sacks, to go with 6.0 tackles-for-loss, and looks to be joined up front by fellow seniors Tyler Clarke at tackle and Chris Patrick at end. Junior punter Chris Bourne earned honorable mention All-NCAC plaudits in 2013 after averaging 37.5 yards per boot, while the special teams will also welcome back the its top two kick return men from a year ago in juniors Johnathon Opet (12 ret/322 yds/1 TD) and Tyler Smith (11 ret/250 yds).

The 2013 season saw Denison reach new heights as the team went 7-3, marking its most victories in a single season since 1986’s North Coast Athletic Conference Championship squad. Fifth-year head coach Jack Hatem returns 15 starters, highlighted by three All-NCAC performers in punter Andy Shaw, quarterback Brandon Sklenar, and running back Colin Morris. In his first season as the starting QB, Sklenar proved to be one of the most dynamic playmakers in the conference, passing for 2,274 yards while leading the team in rushing with 621 yards. Sklenar completed 67 percent of his passes while accounting for 25 touchdowns. Morris returns to the backfield after rushing for 596 yards while leading the squad with nine rushing touchdowns. Senior offensive linemen Tom Demers and Nathan Bartell also return up front. On defense, Hatem will be charged with replacing all four starters on the defensive line, however, four of the five starting defensive backs return to the fold. Sophomore Andrew Baird finished second on the team in tackles with 75 and junior Lucas Romick was tied for second in the NCAC with four interceptions. At linebacker, the team’s third-leading tackler from a year ago, Pat Foley, is back after posting 58 stops and six tackles for a loss. On special teams, Shaw averaged 40.5 yards per punt, the best average by a Denison player since 1982. Placekicker Matt Puracchio was 7-for-9 on field goal attempts.

Entering his third season with the program, head coach Chris Monfiletto is strapped with the challenging task of reshaping his Kenyon team. While the offense will bring back several key pieces, including seven starters from the previous season, the defense will approach the 2014 schedule with just three returning starters. Defensive end Marquis Johnson and free safety Alexander McQuiston highlight the trio of returning defenders and will be asked to make the important transition from starting sophomores to junior leaders. Johnson had 20 tackles, including a sack, last season, while McQuiston racked up 36 tackles and one interception. With very few familiar faces, major changes will encompass the defense, leaving no one immune to the possibility of position changes. The Lords offensive front is a bit more stable. Junior Jake Bates recovered from a season-long thumb injury and returns to the starting quarterback spot where he threw for 1,240 yards and eight touchdowns in 2013. His top two targets, Jibri McLean and Brian Hunca, also return after combining for 62 catches and 810 receiving yards as freshmen. In the backfield, the Lords welcome back the three-headed attack of Brandon January, Casey Beaudouin, and Blake Calcei. That group accounted for 1,282 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns a season ago.

Oberlin College will usher in a new era in a new stadium under first-year Head Coach Jay Anderson. The excitement around the addition of the brand new Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex helped the Yeomen secure 25 newcomers to the roster, however, key returners on both sides of the ball still remain. Quarterback Lucas Poggiali enters his junior year and is poised for a breakout season under new offensive coordinator Bob Saunders. He started all 10 games a season ago, throwing for 1,509 yards and eight touchdowns. The dual-threat also added 255 yards rushing and four scores on the ground. Poggiali is joined in the backfield by one of the league’s most dynamic players in junior running back Blake Buckhannon who totaled 1,281 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns in 2013. Defensively, the Yeomen are young, but experienced. Junior C.J. Ihle is looking to build off a strong sophomore season, while senior Max Schenk hopes to stay healthy and close his career on a high note. Juniors Spencer Conley and Markus West provide pass-rushing ability off the edge, while junior Gabe Edwards headlines a secondary group that features four sophomores behind him. Oberlin will open its new stadium on Saturday, September 20 at 7 p.m. against The College of Wooster.

The Little Giants return the bulk of the nations’ top-ranked defense after posting a 9-1 record last season. Wabash topped all of Division III teams in yards allowed (220.7 ypg) and turnover margin (2.4 per game) and ranked second in rush defense (63.1 ypg) and fourth in scoring defense (11.3 ppg). Senior AllAmerican Cody Buresh is one of nine returning defensive starters. He recorded 57 tackles, 11 sacks, and 20.5 tackles for losses in 2013. Fellow senior AJ Akinribade made 47 stops with 9 tackles for losses and 4.5 sacks. Eddie Cmehil lead the Wabash secondary with four interceptions, while Delon Pettiford picked off three passes in his rookie campaign. The Little Giants finished 2013 with a league-leading 18 interceptions. Wabash rushed for 2,324 yards and 32 touchdowns despite losing both Tyler Holmes and Mason Zurek to knee injuries a year ago. Prior to suffering their season-ending injuries, Holmes averaged 122 yards while Zurek picked up 101.2 yards per game. Both are expected to be back and ready for action. Junior quarterback Michael Putko threw for 1,702 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first year under center. Houston Hodges — a two-way starter at wide receiver and cornerback — caught 47 passes for 441 yards and 4 touchdowns. Wes Brown and Tré Taylor return on the offensive line for the Little Giants.

After reaching the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in back-to-back years, Wittenberg returns 39 letterwinners in 2014. However, 12 of the 19 Tigers who earned All-NCAC designations in 2013 have departed, including record-setting quarterback Reed Florence and his top three wide receivers. Junior quarterback Zack Jenkins is the favorite to take the reins on offense after scoring five touchdowns in 2013. He has two outstanding tailbacks to lean on as juniors Sean Gary and Jimmy Dehnke return after combining for 1,755 yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns. Three starters on the offensive line also return, led by All-American senior tackle Aaron Coeling, while the receiving corps will be led by senior wideout Zac Wilson, who hauled in 37 passes a year ago. Senior linebackers Evan Killilea and Nick Gibson anchor the defense after ranking second and third, respectively, on the team in tackles a year ago. Junior tackle Josh Bannick is back after an All-NCAC showing in 2013, and he will be joined on the line by the Tigers’ Rookie of the Year, sophomore end Brady Vanover. The flanks will be covered by a pair of returning starters in senior Victor Banjo and junior Ryan Myers. The kicking game figures to be solid again with the return of junior Evan Grissom, who hit 62-of-63 extra points and 7-of-9 field goals in 2013, and sophomore punter Will Gingery.

Wooster aims to build on the momentum from last year’s five-win improvement during coach Frank Colaprete’s initial season. The Fighting Scots ended on a four-game winning streak to go 7-3 overall, and now with a year of experience in Colaprete’s offensive and defensive systems, the 17 returning starters and other veterans are hoping to make a push for the program’s first NCAC championship since 2004. Richard Barnes, a rare fifth-year starter at quarterback, thrived under the new coaching staff, throwing for a school-record 2,243 yards and adding a career-high 612 on the ground while accounting for 25 touchdowns (16 passing, 9 rushing). Barnes welcomes backfield mate Sean Hackel, a senior who led the NCAC with 1,097 rushing yards last season, as well as the team’s three starting receivers – Justin Rice, Keir Pace, and Darrian Owens. Pace played the slot, catching 48 balls for 475 yards, while Owens got his 714 yards in big chunks as he had 29 receptions, eight going for scores. Rice’s campaign was cut short due to injury. If the Scots are to contend for the 2014 NCAC championship, they’ll need to take significant strides defensively. Seven starters return, anchored by senior linebacker Mitchell Czerniak, who was in on a team-high 104 tackles last fall, and senior strong safety Brandon James, who had five interceptions to boost his career total to 10.

2013 SEASON REVIEW

Wittenberg captured its conferenceleading 12th NCAC title a year ago after finishing the season with a perfect 9-0 mark against league foes and a 10-2 record overall. The Tigers then went on to earn a 59-17 victory over Lebanon Valley in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, before falling to eventual national runner-up Mount Union, 56-21, in the second round. The Mike Gregory Award as the NCAC’s Offensive Player of the Year went to Wittenberg senior quarterback Reed Florence. Florence led the league in passing efficiency (183.7) after completing 212-of-330 pass attempts for 3,366 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also added 376 rushing yards and an additional nine rushing touchdowns. Wabash senior linebacker Nate Scola collected the Hank Critchfield Award as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Scola finished the 2013 campaign with 70 tackles (37 solo, 33 Asst.), which included 23.5 tackles-for-loss and 8.5 sacks. DePauw senior wide receiver Barry Flynn earned the Newcomer of the Year Award after leading the league with 71 receptions in his only season of collegiate competition. He also finished third among league receivers in both yards (889) and touchdowns (10).
