Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support Mason Espinosa, the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fourty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports competed in the NCAA postAli Ross, DePauw season during the 2012-13 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 32nd time in program history. In addition, the DePauw women’s basketball team raised the Walnut & Broze trophy for the second time in program history, making them the only women’s basketball team in conference history to win a women’s basketball national title. Conference members have accumulated 66 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 221 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

KENYON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 30TH NCAC MEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference men’s tennis coaches have unanimously predicted that Kenyon will hoist the championship trophy for the eighth year in a row based on preseason balloting by the league coaches. The Lords were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting all nine first-place votes and 81 total points. DePauw, last year’s runner-up at the conference tournament, finished behind Kenyon in the poll with 79 points. Denison rounded out the top three in the poll in third-place with 64 points, followed by Allegheny (50), Wittenberg (40), Oberlin (36) and Wabash (34) in places four through seven, respectively. Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster rounded out the poll in a tie for eighth-place with 15 points apiece. Kenyon enters the spring portion of the 2013-14 season ranked sixth on the Division III Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Preseason National Rankings as the Lords return four All-NCAC performers from a year ago. Junior Mike Razumovsky (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville), who earned All-American accolades last year after advancing to the quarter final round of the NCAA Div. III singles championships, is the Lords’ top returning singles player after he finished 2012-13 with an overall record of 16-5, including a mark of 11-2 at the second flight. Junior Wade Heerboth (Tucson, AZ/Foothill) was also an All-NCAC first-team selection last season with a 27-4 singles record, while the junior duo of Jacob Huber (New York, NY/Fieldstone School) and Tim Rosensteel (East Windsor, NJ/Peddie School) also collected all-conference accolades last spring on the honorable mention squad. Razumovsky and Rosensteel also earned All-NCAC first-team honors in doubles competition a year ago; however, both will be paired with new partners this spring after the graduation of C.J. Williams and Paul Burgin. Leading the KC men in his 19th season is six-time NCAC Coach of the Year selection Scott Thielke. In 18 total years at the helm of the Lords’ tennis program, Thielke owns a career record of 306-99. He has led the Lords to 13 NCAA appearances, including an active streak of 12 consecutive showings (2002-13). Kenyon leads the NCAC with 16 championships in 29 years (1989, 1991-93, ‘95, 2002-05, 2007-13), including winning 11 of the last 12 crowns. Denison is not far off in the all-time title count as it has earned 12 championships (1985-89, ‘94, 1997-01, ‘06), while Wooster has captured two outright titles (1990, ‘96) and four all-time. Denison and Wooster shared the inaugural title in 1985, while Denison, Kenyon and Wooster were declared tri-champions in 1989.

DEPAUW SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 30TH NCAC WOMEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference women’s tennis coaches have predicted that DePauw will collect its third-straight league championship based on preseason balloting by the league coaches. The Tigers, who are the two-time defending NCAC Champions, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting seven of the possible eight first-place votes cast and 63 total points. Denison, winners of 11 conference titles all-time, fielded the final first-place vote and finished second with 57 points. Kenyon finished third with 44 points, while Oberlin (43) and Allegheny (31) rounded out the top five. Wittenberg and Wooster tied for sixth in the poll with 21 points, with Ohio Wesleyan finishing eighth with eight total points. DePauw, which advanced to the third round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Tournament, returns a plethora of talent from last year’s squad that finished the season with an overall record of 19-8. The Tigers, who are ranked 13th in the Div. III Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Preseason National Rankings, will once again rely on the strengths of junior Maggie MacPhail (Indianapolis, IN/Park Tudor). MacPhail is a two-time All-NCAC first-team selection and finished 2012-13 with an overall singles record of 13-15, including a mark of 11-13 in the No. 1 position. Junior Claire Marshall (Marietta, GA/George Walton) was also an All-NCAC first-team selection for DPU a year ago and finished the season with a singles record of 22-12, which included marks of 7-4 in the No. 2 position and 9-4 in the No. 3 position. Marshall and senior Meg Crowley (Barrington, IL/Barrington) paired together a year ago to earn first-team all-conference accolades in doubles competition after the duo posted an overall record of 29-13. Individually, Crowley was also a second-team All-NCAC singles selection last spring with an overall record of 15-20, while senior Caroline Emhardt (Carmel, IN/Park Tudor) and junior Julie Wittwer (Grosse Pointe, MI/Grosse Pointe South) also earned All-NCAC laurels a year ago on the honorable mention squad. Scott Riggle once again returns to the sidelines for his 14th season at the helm of the DPU women’s tennis program. In 13 season’s with the Tigers, Riggle has compiled an overall record of 233-95. In 29 years of North Coast women’s tennis competition, four schools have claimed league championships: Allegheny took the first title in 1985, then Kenyon went on a run to claim 15 of the next 16 titles, interrupted only by Denison’s first title in 1994. The Big Red again broke the Ladies’ streak in 2002, and reeled off 10-straight titles until DePauw topped the field in each of the last two seasons. Kenyon leads the way with 15 North Coast titles, followed by Denison (11), DePauw (2) and Allegheny (1).

NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ALL-DECADE TEAM Kenyon’s Michael Greenberg and Oberlin’s Ariel Lewis head an impressive list of student-athletes named to the North Coast Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary men’s and women’s tennis all-decade teams. Ariel Lewis (2009-12) {left}, a four-time All-NCAC first-team selection, earned NCAC Player of the Year honors in 2009 and 2012 and was also named the league’s Newcomer of the Year in 2009. Lewis, a 2012 Oberlin graduate, spent a majority of her four-year career with the Yeowomen in the No. 1 singles position and compiled an impressive overall record of 93-27 during that time. Lewis competed in the NCAA Division III singles national championships in both 2011 and 2012 and also played an integral role in leading the Yeowomen to the championship match of the 2012 NCAC Women’s Tennis Tournament. Denison’s Megan Damico (2006-09), also a four-time All-NCAC first-team honoree, was the only other women’s studentathlete named to the all-decade team that earned multiple NCAC Player of the Year distinctions over the last decade. Damico collected back-to-back NCAC Player of the Year awards in 2007 and 2008. In four years with the Big Red, she compiled an overall singles record of 60-20, including a mark of 40-16 in the No. 1 spot in the lineup. In addition to Lewis and Damico, Denison’s Kristin Cobb (2008-11) and Kenyon’s Amy Schlessman (2010-13) were also four-time All-NCAC first-team selections in the previous decade. Cobb and Schlessman both earned NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors in 2008 and 2010, respectively, while Cobb was also named the NCAC Player of the Year in 2011. Michael Greenberg (2008-10) {right} was the most decorated NCAC men’s tennis player in the last 10 years as he earned three-straight NCAC Player of the Year awards from 2008-10. Greenberg, who was also the 2008 NCAC Newcomer of the Year honoree, posted an overall singles record of 81-15 (.844) in just three year’s with the Lords’ men’s tennis program. Greenberg jump started his career at Kenyon with the highest individual honor in the country as he won the NCAA Div. III singles national championship with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Middlebury’s Filip Marinkovic in the championship match. Two other former Kenyon student-athletes named to the all-decade team were back-to-back NCAC Player of the Year honorees, including Borko Tesic (2004 & 05) and Paul Burgin (2012 & 13). In addition, Denison’s Jordan Buehler (200607, 09), Allegheny’s Pat Cole (2011-13), Wabash’s Jay Horrey (2006-07, 09) and Oberlin’s Chris Pray (2006-08) joined Greenberg and Burgin as three-time All-NCAC first-team selections in the last decade. Kenyon’s Mike Herrick is the lone selection to also be named to the NCAC’s 20th Anniversary all-decade men’s tennis team, while Allegheny’s Pat Cole is the only current student-athlete to be selected to the 30th Anniversary all-decade squad. The North Coast Athletic Conference is celebrating its 30th playing season by selecting All-Decade teams in nearly every championship sport. Players from the first 10 years of play were selected in 1993-94, while players who competed from 1993-2002 were named to the 20th Anniversary All-Decade team. All current head coaches were asked to vote, as were some former coaches and administrators. The Kenyon Lords won nine of the 10 NCAC men’s championships in the last decade, with Denison interrupting that string by collecting the title in 2006. In women’s tennis, Denison opened the decade with eight-straight conference titles, but the DePauw Tigers are the two-time defending NCAC champions since joining the league in the 2011-12 academic year.
