Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support Mason Espinosa, the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fourty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports competed in the NCAA postAli Ross, DePauw season during the 2012-13 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 32nd time in program history. In addition, the DePauw women’s basketball team raised the Walnut & Broze trophy for the second time in program history, making them the only women’s basketball team in conference history to win a women’s basketball national title. Conference members have accumulated 66 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 221 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

OHIO WESLEYAN SELECTED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 30TH NORTH COAST MEN’S LACROSSE SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference coaches have tabbed Ohio Wesleyan as the favorite for the 30th men’s lacrosse season based on preseason balloting by the league coaches. The Battling Bishops, winners of the inaugural NCAC Tournament in 2013, earned five of the possible eight first-place votes cast by league coaches to total 61 points. Denison, which is the two-time defending NCAC champion, earned the final three first-place votes and finished second in the poll with 59 points. Wooster landed in the third position with 44 points, followed by Kenyon (35), Wittenberg (33), Oberlin (32), DePauw (15) and Hiram (9). OWU will have a powerful attack line in 2014, led by senior Casey Helms (Sandwich, MA/Bridgton Acad.) and junior John Umbach (Montclair, NJ/Montclair). Helms, an All-NCAC second-team selection in 2013, is the Bishops’ top returning offensive threat after totaling 51 points last spring with 16 assists and a team-high 35 goals. Umbach, a member of the 2013 All-NCAC honorable mention squad, was second on the team with 31 goals and handed out seven assists for 38 points. Senior Spencer Schnell (Dublin, OH/Jerome), an honorable mention All-American in 2013, will once again give the squad a scoring threat from the midfield position after he finished with 20 goals last season. Defensively, junior Ryan McMahon (Springfield, VA/The Bullis School) returns in the goal for OWU after collecting 134 saves and a 6.65 goals-against-average in 2013, while junior Sam Gioseffi (Harrison, NY/Harrison) led the Bishops a year ago with 116 ground balls and .587 face-off percentage (169-of-288). Head coach Mike Plantholt, who has guided the Battling Bishops to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, owns a record of 34-15 in three years at the helm of the OWU men’s lacrosse program. Ohio Wesleyan leads all North Coast teams with 18 championships in 29 years. Denison, which earned the league title a year ago, follows with 14, Wittenberg has two, while Kenyon and Wooster each can boast one championship. The NCAC has had trichampions on three separate occasions, first in 2000 when the Big Red, Bishops and Lords shared the title, then in 2004, when Denison, OWU and Wooster each had a piece of the crown, only to have it happen again in 2011 with Denison, Wittenberg and Ohio Wesleyan sharing the top spot. The conference also saw Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg share the conference crown in 2010.

NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ALL-DECADE TEAM Two former Ohio Wesleyan University standouts highlighted the list of players selected to the North Coast Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary All-Decade men’s lacrosse team. 2005 graduate John Schlegel and 2008 graduate Chris Eccles were the only two players in the last decade to be named the NCAC Player of the Year on two separate occasions. John Schlegel {left} earned back-to-back NCAC Player of the Year honors in 2004 and 2005 and guided the Battling Bishops to a pair of NCAC titles in the previous decade. OWU shared the title in 2004 with Denison and Wooster, before capturing the outright title in 2005. In 26 combined games from 2004-05, Schlegel netted 83 goals and dished out 42 assists for 125 total points from the attack position. In addition to his conference accolades, Schlegel also earned All-American citations in 2004 (HM) and 2005 (2nd Team) from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). Chris Eccles {right}, a four-time All-NCAC selection, was named the NCAC Newcomer of the Year in 2005, followed by back-to-back Player of the Year honors in 2006 and 2007. After earning All-NCAC honorable mention accolades in 2005, Eccles was a mainstay on the first team from 2006-08. Eccles is among the top midfielders in OWU’s illustrious history as he ranks second all-time at the position with 183 points after netting 99 career goals and passing out 84 assists. During his tenure at OWU, the Battling Bishops won two NCAC titles (2005, 07) and competed in four-straight NCAA Division III Tournaments. Eccles was also a three-time USILA AllAmerican selection, earning third-team laurels in 2007 and honorable mention accolades in 2006 and 2008. There were seven additional student-athletes named to the NCAC men’s lacrosse 30th Anniversary all-decade squad that earned three first-team all-conference nods in the last 10 years, including Denison attack Brady Burton (2007-08, 10), Ohio Wesleyan attack Colin Short (2011-13), Ohio Wesleyan defender Tony D’Abarno (2009-11), Denison midfielder Dan Maude (2007-09), Denison midfielder Taylor Nissi (2006-08), Kenyon midfielder Charlie Sayer (2009-11) and Denison midfielder Tanner Smith (2009-11). Maude and Short were also named NCAC Players of the Year in 2009 and 2013, respectively. The North Coast Athletic Conference is celebrating its 30th playing season by selecting All-Decade teams in nearly every championship sport. Players from the first 10 years of play were selected in 1993-94, while players who competed from 1993-2002 were named to the 20th Anniversary All-Decade team. All current head coaches were asked to vote, as were some former coaches and administrators. Four different NCAC squads earned at least a share of an NCAC Men’s Lacrosse championship in the past 10 years. The decade opened with a three-way tie between Denison, Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster in 2005, followed with outright titles from Ohio Wesleyan in 2005, Denison in 2006, Ohio Wesleyan in 2007 and Denison in both 2008 and 2009. Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg shared the 2010 crown, while there was another three-way tie in 2011 between Denison, Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg. The Big Red are currently the two-time defending league champions with titles in 2012 and 2013.
