Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Jane Hopkinson-Wood, Wittenberg

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic

quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

Sean Kiley, Oberlin

Sixty-one teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2014-15 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 34th time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 68 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2014-15 academic year, 219 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

OHIO WESLEYAN TOPS PRESEASON POLL AS NORTH COAST PREPARES FOR 32ND MEN’S SOCCER CAMPAIGN CLEVELAND -- Ohio Wesleyan has once again been selected as the preseason favorite based on balloting from league coaches heading into the 32nd North Coast men’s soccer season. The Battling Bishops, who are coming off their seventh consecutive NCAC championship and NCAA-record 37th Division III playoff appearance including the program’s 10th trip to the National Semifinals, earned eight of the first-place votes cast by league coaches to finish on top of the poll with 96 total points. Kenyon, coming off its second-straight trip to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament, earned the final two first-place votes and finished second in the poll with 91 points, while DePauw rounded out the top-three in third with 74 points. Denison checked in at fourth with 62 points, while Wabash cracked the top-five in fifth with 60 points after a school-record 13win season in 2014. Allegheny earned the sixth position with 48 points, followed by Oberlin in seventh (45), Hiram in eighth (34), Wooster in ninth (23) and Wittenberg in 10th (17). Ohio Wesleyan enters the 2015 season under the direction of head coach Jay Martin for the 39th consecutive season. In 38 seasons at the helm, Martin has compiled the most wins in college soccer history (all divisions) as he owns a career record of 657-124-61. The Bishops return three of their top four leading scorers from the 2014 squad that finished the year with a conference-high 54 goals, including an NCAC-best 22 in league play. Leading the charge offensively for OWU this fall is two-time first-team All-NCAC performer, senior Brian Schaefer (Chatham, NJ/Chatham), who accounted for 11 goals, five assists and 27 total points last fall. Senior Evan Lee (Toledo, OH/ St. Johns) and junior Kyle Baum (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty) join Schaefer in 2015 as the trio combined for 19 goals, 12 assists and 40 total points to lead the Bishops to their second-straight unbeaten mark in conference play (8-0-1). The Bishops have gone unbeaten in league play in six of the last seven seasons. In addition to his offensive lift, Lee anchors a defense that allowed just three goals in NCAC play for a 0.32 goals-against-average in league action.
