Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Jane Hopkinson-Wood, Wittenberg

2

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic

quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

Sean Kiley, Oberlin

Sixty-one teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2014-15 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 34th time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 68 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2014-15 academic year, 219 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DENISON SELECTED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE AS NORTH COAST PREPARES FOR 32ND WOMEN’S SOCCER SEASON CLEVELAND -- Coming off a second-straight season without an outright NCAC Women’s Soccer champion, Denison narrowly emerged as the preseason favorite in balloting by North Coast Athletic Conference coaches in the 2015 preseason poll. The Big Red earned four of nine possible first-place votes cast by league coaches to top the poll with 73 total points. Denison, which has only lost three league games over the past two years, is coming off a 13 win season in 2014 the most since the Big Red won 16 in 2010. Allegheny, coming off its second-straight conference title, earned three first-place votes and finished five points behind Denison in the poll with 68 points. Kenyon claimed the final two first-place votes and finished third with 65 points after returning to the top of the league for the first-time since 2006 as co-champions with the Gators. Rounding out the top-five in the preseason poll is Wittenberg (58) and DePauw (42). Oberlin checked in at sixth with 41 points, followed by Oberlin (24), Ohio Wesleyan (19) and Hiram (15). Denison will again enter competition this fall under the direction of head coach Gail Murphy. In 18 seasons at the helm of the Big Red women’s soccer program, Murphy has posted a record of 245-92-30 (.708), including seven NCAC championships and 12 appearances in the NCAA Div. III Tournament. The Big Red return a wealth of talent from the 2014 squad that finished the season with an overall record of 13-6-0 and led the NCAC in both goals (50) and assists (30). Leading the charge offensively for Denison this fall is three-time first-team All-NCAC performer, senior Andrea Witte (Utica, OH/Northridge), who accounted for seven goals, 11 assists and 25 total points. Denison returns a league-high six all-conference performers from 2014, including NCAC Newcomer of the Year, sophomore Drew Wentzel (Schaumburg, IL/James B. Conant). Wentzel will anchor a back-line that allowed just 19 goals, the fewest in the NCAC, and produced a goals-against-average of 0.99.
