Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Jane Hopkinson-Wood, Wittenberg

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic

quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

Sean Kiley, Oberlin

Sixty-one teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2014-15 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 34th time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 68 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2014-15 academic year, 219 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

WITTENBERG, which has won five NCAC titles and four NCAA Tournament games in the last six years, heads into a promising 2015 season with 40 returning letterwinners. Among the returning letterwinners are 15 starters who played key roles in Wittenberg’s 9-2 overall record a year ago. Seven of the 14 Tigers who earned All-NCAC honors in 2014 are among the returners. Leading the charge is senior quarterback Zack Jenkins, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2014 with 262.9 passing yards per game. Seven of Jenkins’ top eight receivers are back, starting with senior wide receiver Zach Culvahouse, who caught a school -record 81 passes in his first year as a starter. Senior wide receiver Corey Stump added 45 receptions, and junior wideout Luke Landis chipped in 40 catches. Senior running backs Sean Gary and Jimmy Dehnke have split the carries the last two years, combining for more than 3,000 yards from scrimmage (combining receiving and rushing yards). They will run behind an offensive line that features three returning starters, including two-time All-NCAC honoree Alec Nutting at center. The defense features three returning starters on the defensive line, led by senior tackle Josh Bannick, who has earned two straight first-team all-conference designations. Senior cornerback Ryan Myers and senior safety Winston Thomas also return after earning all-conference honors a year ago. WABASH begins the 2015 football season ranked 10th in the preseason D3football.com poll, thanks in part to a veteran group of returning starters. Senior quarterback Michael Putko rotated time in the backfield with junior Connor Rice, combining for 2,322 passing yards and 24 TDs. Their protection up front returns in tact as all five starting offensive linemen — led by All-NCAC tackles Wes Brown and Deryion Sturdivant — return in 2015. Senior running back Mason Zurek did not start any of the 12 games for Little Giants last season, but still rushed for 835 yards and 12 TDs to earn first team All-NCAC honors. Starting wideouts Drake Christen and Sammy Adams, along with Matthew Dickerson, Jr., are also back for Wabash. Two-time All-American Cody Buresh and four-time first team All-NCAC linebacker AJ Akinribade graduated, but eight other starters return for a Wabash defense that ranked first in Division III in rushing defense and team sacks. All-NCAC players Tyler McCullen (Sr., DL), Evan Rutter (Sr., DL), Austin Brown (Jr., DB), and Ethan Buresh (Jr., DL) are part of eight total returning starters on defense. Brown paced the Wabash defense with 101 tackles and three interceptions. Buresh, McCullen, and Rutter combined for 163 total tackles, 39.5 tackles-forlosses and 24 sacks.

DEPAUW returns 41 lettermen, including 19 starters from last year’s 7-3 squad that finished third in the NCAC standings. Junior quarterback Matt Hunt, a two-year starter, is back after completing 58 percent of his passes last season with 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions. His top returning targets include senior Connor Jeffers and sophomore Jake Hagan. Senior tailback Amen Galley returns after rushing for 684 yards and six TDs, while sophomore Jack Gruber totaled 363 rushing yards and reached paydirt eight times. Anchoring the Tigers’ offense are five returning linemen, including senior left tackle Hunter Logan, junior left guard Cody Campbell, senior center Taylor Shellman, junior right guard Eric Brooks and senior right tackle Kody Bontreger. Eight starters are back on a defensive unit that limited seven opponents to 15 or fewer points. Junior tackle Michael Mitsch led the Tigers with 8.0 tackles-forloss last season, while junior nose guard Peter Nelson was right behind with 7.5. Each had a team-high 2.5 sacks in 2014. Junior linebackers Will Longthorne and Thomas Gray led the 2014 squad with 86 and 62 tackles, respectively. All four starters in the secondary are back, including senior safeties Adam Folta and Paul Simon as well as senior corner Hamm Hooper and junior corner Cody Baker. Hooper and Baker each picked off a team-high three passes last year. OHIO WESLEYAN and head coach Tom Watts will look to 15 returning starters to help the Battling Bishops contend for their second North Coast Athletic Conference championship in four seasons. The Bishops’ defensive line returns four starters, led by junior end Gary Brodek, who led the squad with 8.0 sacks on the way to second-team All-NCAC honors last season. Senior Cameron Pappa is back at the other end spot, and senior nose tackle Dominic Wilson and junior tackle Beau Michel also return. Junior Keaton Leppla returns at middle linebacker after ranking in the league’s top 12 in tackles last season. In the backfield, senior Zane Kieffer, who set a school season record for interception return yards in 2014, and senior Roemello Cook are back at the safety positions, while sophomore Jerry Harper returns at one cornerback spot. Seven starters return on offense, highlighted by junior quarterback Dominick Orsini, who threw for 1,729 yards last season. Orsini will throw to three returning receivers in juniors Tim Shadoan, Adrian Bishop, and Ross Hickenbottom, and will work behind returning starters Brooks Gilmore and Alex Sigg at the guard positions and junior Chris Grissom at left tackle. DENISON and sixth year head coach Jack Hatem return 18 starters from last year’s 6-4 squad that gave the program its first back-to-back winning seasons since 1985-86. Leading the returners is 2014 NCAC Offensive Player of the Year and AP Little All-American, DuShawn Brown. He set school records in receptions (83), receiving yards (1,397), touchdown receptions (13) and all-purpose yards (1,807). His 1,397 receiving yards was also a new conference record. Brown was the first wide receiver in the 31-year history of the conference to earn its Offensive Player of the Year award. On offense, fellow seniors Hunter Winans (43 rec., 451 yards), Cam Layer (11 rec., 3 TDs) and Kyle Rose (started 10 games at left tackle) return to the fold. The coaching staff will be charged with finding a new quarterback following the graduation Brandon Sklenar who piled up 3,414 yards of total offense in 2014. Junior second-team All-NCAC pick, Drew Gray also returns at right tackle. Nine of 11 starters return on defense, led by all-conference standouts Zach Neufeld (34 tackles, 6.5 sacks), Andrew Baird (97 tackles, 2 INT) and Joel Lohoua (42 tackles, 1 INT). Senior defensive linemen Lars Soderberg and Cameron Kahl combined for 18.5 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks a season ago.

2015 PREVIEW - Cont. HIRAM looks to continue its success after posting one of the best seasons in recent history last fall. Sixth year head coach Randy Moore returns 50 letter winners from last season’s squad that went 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the NCAC. On offense, the Terriers welcome back their top two running backs and top four receivers. Junior David Perkins ran for a team-leading 395 yards last season, while sophomore Danny Robinson averaged 9.2 yards per carry before seeing his season cut short due to injury. At receiver, senior Jaylen Dinard, senior Nate Eaton and senior Britton Lewis all are back after posting 500-yard seasons. In addition, junior Josh Philander is back after leading the team with four touchdowns. On defense, the Terrier welcome back just as much talent as on offense. Junior All-NCAC honoree Zayd Mabin is back after recording 10.5 tackles for loss in 2014, which led the team. Junior Kyle Burchett is back at linebacker after making 78 tackles and defensive back Tevin Weaver returns after forcing six turnovers (3 fumbles, 3 interceptions) last season. WOOSTER will test the long-held view that success in football “starts up front” during 2015, as it returns four starters on the offensive line and three on the defensive line but just three others at the rest of the positions combined. Nick Flannery, who was an All-NCAC performer and Academic All-American® last season, is expected to make the move to center where he’ll anchor the Fighting Scots’ offense. Fellow senior Paul Kelbly, who has been the left guard most of his career, will also likely be a four-year starter, while junior Todd Ulmer and sophomore Drake Schwenke are back as well after lining up at center and right tackle, respectively. At the offensive skill positions, senior Dan Gorzynski is the top returning pass catcher from last fall (14 receptions, 118 yards), Derrick Johnson Jr. rushed the ball 34 times for 102 yards and two scores as a freshman reserve, and Gary Muntean will be part of a heated competition for the quarterback position after starting three times during his debut season. Defensively, Wooster graduated first-team All-NCAC safety Brandon James, who remains with the program as a coach, and now hopes to set the tone with the likes of senior Stephen McKinney and sophomores Ben Kumpf and Aaron Roberson on the line. McKinney has twice earned All-NCAC honors, while Kumpf and Roberson were both full-time starters as freshmen. OBERLIN looks to improve upon its 2-8 mark from a season ago under the senior leadership of quarterback Lucas Poggiali. The Sandusky, Ohio, native combined for 17 total touchdowns in 2014 with 14 coming through air. The Yeomen offense will need to be more efficient in order to succeed, especially on third down where they converted just 35% (50-of-144) last year. Oberlin welcomes back a trio of senior running backs who were injured in 2014 as they look to end their careers on a high note. Blake Buckhannon was off to a fast start before he went down in week six, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Dynamic threat Justin Williams will be another playmaker to watch, while Nick Theofilos is back as their lead blocker after he missed all of 2014 with a knee injury. On the outside, junior wideout Justin Cruz returns as Poggiali’s top target. The All-NCAC second-team selection totaled 828 receiving yards and a single-season school record of 11 touchdowns. He also set the single-game school record for receiving yards in a game with 242 yards against Allegheny (10/18/14). Defensively, the Yeomen will have to be much better as they strive to lower their 43.6 points allowed per game in 2014. An influx of defensive backs through recruiting should help fill some of the void, but with the healthy return of Adrian Kelly, the emergence of Larry Leggett and the solid play of Brad Cole and Gabe Edwards – the Yeomen secondary should be better this fall. Upfront the Yeomen will look to seniors C.J. Ihle and Spencer Conley to provide pressure, while sophomores Jonathon Smith and Luis Solorzano will be tasked with clogging up the middle to shutdown the running game.

KENYON head coach Chris Monfiletto will look to lead the 2015 Lords to a bounce-back campaign after taking some lumps during a one-win 2014 season plagued by injury and inexperience. With a bevy of starters returning (9 offense, 8 defense), the Lords are hoping the trials with last year’s young team turn into successes this coming season. Defensively, Kenyon’s secondary may be the best part of the Lords’ defense. Safety Jack Hanratty returns along with Curt Williams and corners Brandon Byrd and Marcus Townsend. Meanwhile, Williams and Byrd were among the top freshmen last season in total tackles. Nicholas LaPoint returns to lead the defensive line while Alexander McQuiston, Ryan Angelo and Cody Keenan will head up the linebacking corp. McQuiston ranked seventh in the NCAC in tackles last year and third in forced fumbles. Kenyon’s offense had a run-first mentality last season, but anticipates a more wide-open attack in 2015. Jake Bates returns at quarterback along with five returning starters on the offensive line. The passing attack should take a leap with the return of Jibri McLean who missed last season with a torn Achilles. Tight end Greg McIntosh, along with receivers Brian Hunca, Ian Bell and do-it-all fullback Blake Calcei also return. The Lords will have to replace running back Brandon January who accumulated nearly 1,900 rushing yards in his career. ALLEGHENY will feature a number of experienced players on both sides of the ball, as the Gators look to bounce back from a pair of disappointing campaigns. Offensively, the team has returnees at nearly each skill position. Junior Jon Nigro has started 19-of-20 games over the past two seasons at quarterback, throwing for 1,660 yards and six touchdowns a season ago, while slashing his interception total in half. He will be challenged by classmate Tyler McLaughlin, who saw time in eight contests in 2014. Coach Mark Matlak’s squad returns its top two rushers in senior Nick Deichler (540 yds, 6 TD) and sophomore Jake Wilson (280 yds, 2 TD), while honorable mention All-NCAC pick Tyler Smith (42 rec, 440 yds, 2 TD) looks to lead the receiving corps. Senior Zach Harvey has started 20 consecutive games at guard, and will anchor a young offensive line that must overcome the loss of three starters to graduation from a season ago. The Gator defense welcomes back three of its top four tacklers from a season ago, led by sophomore linebacker Nick Murgo, who was named the 2014 NCAC Newcomer of the Year after amassing 107 stops and 10.5 tackles-for-loss. Classmate Matt Wetzel appeared in all 10 games at outside linebacker in 2014, making 54 tackles, while the secondary looks to be led by safeties Travis Thomas (34 tackles, 2 INT) and Wyatt Boyler (44 tackles, 2 PBU).

DENISON UNIVERSITY Head Coach Jack Hatem

Buresh, McCullen, and Rutter combined for 163 total tackles, 39.5 tackles-for-losses and 24 sacks.

Defensively, Wooster graduated firstteam All-NCAC safety Brandon James, who remains with the program as a coach, and now hopes to set the tone with the likes of senior Stephen McKinney and sophomores Ben Kumpf and Aaron Roberson on the line. McKinney has twice earned All-NCAC honors, while Kumpf and Roberson were both full-time starters as freshmen.

2014 SEASON REVIEW

Wittenberg captured its conference-leading 13th NCAC title a year ago after finishing the season with a perfect 9-0 mark against league foes and a 9-2 record overall. The Tigers were upended by Washington & Jefferson, 41-25, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, while Wabash earned one of the six available Pool C at-large invitations into the national tournament. The Little Giants opened tournament play with a 33-14 home victory over Franklin, before falling in the second round against eventual national champion WisconsinWhitewater by a 38-14 margin. The Mike Gregory Award as the NCAC’s Offensive Player of the Year went to Denison junior wide receiver DuShawn Brown. Brown, who is the first receiver in league history to garner the Gregory Award, set three school records and one conference mark during the 2014 season after hauling in 83 receptions for 1,397 yards and 13 touchdowns. His totals in all three categories eclipsed DU school records, while the 1,397 receiving yards topped the NCAC’s previous single-season record of 1,386 set by Wittenberg’s Josh McKee in 2010. Brown topped the 100yard receiving mark in five games last season, which included a 13-catch, three-touchdown and 339-yard performance in the Big Red’s 38-24 win over Wooster on October 25th. Wabash senior defensive end Cody Buresh collected the Hank Critchfield Award as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Scola finished the 2014 campaign with 64 tackles (32 solo, 32 Asst.), which included 22.0 tackles-forloss and 11.0 sacks. He also reached a career milestone in the Little Giants’ 27-3 victory over DePauw in the 121st Monon Bell Classic as he finished the game with 3.0 sacks to up his career total to 32.0, which surpassed the previous school record of 30 set by Darryl Kennon ‘09. Allegheny freshman linebacker Nick Murgo was named the 2014 NCAC Newcomer of the Year after he finished second in the league this fall in tackles with 107 (60 solo, 47 asst.). In 10 games for the Gators this fall, Murgo also accumulated 10.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups.
