Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.
Cody Buresh, Wabash

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic
quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.
Molly Chapman, Denison
Fifty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2013-14 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 33rd time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 68 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2013-14 academic year, 223 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

WOOSTER SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 31ST NORTH COAST BASEBALL SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference baseball coaches have selected Wooster as the favorite for the 2015 season based on preseason balloting. The Fighting Scots, who have won 15 NCAC titles all-time, earned seven of 10 possible first-place votes cast by league coaches to total 94 points. DePauw, the defending NCAC champions, collected two first-place votes and finished second in the poll with 84 points, while Denison earned the final first-place vote and finished just behind the Tigers in third with 83 points. Allegheny checked in at fourth with 68 points, followed by Wabash (63), Ohio Wesleyan (47), Oberlin (43), Kenyon (25), Wittenberg (25) and Hiram (18). After graduating 16 seniors off its 2014 squad, Wooster will boast one of its youngest teams in recent memory this spring; however, the senior trio of shortstop John McLain (Burbank, OH/Northwestern) and third baseman Frank Vance (Coraopolis, PA/Bishop Canevin) provide the Scots with a solid veteran presence in the starting lineup. Vance, a first-team, All-NCAC selection in 2014, is the Scots’ leading returner in nearly every major offensive category, including batting average (.414), runs batted in (39), runs scored (39) and Hits (65), while McLain is the team’s returning leader from a year ago in home runs (5), walks (22) and stolen bases (4). The pitching rotation will be one of the biggest question marks for the Scots this season as junior Zach Woullard (Canton, OH/Jackson) is the most experienced returner with 32.1 career innings. After going 1-1 with 22 strikeouts in 24.0 innings last year, he’ll have an opportunity to become the ace of the staff this year. The Fighting Scots will against be led by skipper Tim Pettorini for the 34th year in a row. Pettorini, a 10-time NCAC Coach of the Year recipient, enters the 2015 season with an overall record of 1,064-403-6, which is good for the eighth-highest win total in Division III history and is also second among active Div. III coaches, behind only Ithaca’s George Valesente (1,067-476-8). Wooster leads all NCAC teams with 15 championships in 30 years, including winning eight of the last 13 league titles. Ohio Wesleyan (10), Allegheny (4), DePauw (1) and Wabash (1) are the only other teams to capture a title in conference history. Allegheny and Wooster shared the inaugural crown in the 1985 season.
