Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.
Cody Buresh, Wabash

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic
quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.
Molly Chapman, Denison
Fifty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2013-14 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 33rd time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 67 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2013-14 academic year, 223 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DEPAUW SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 18TH NORTH COAST SOFTBALL SEASON CLEVELAND -- North Coast Athletic Conference softball coaches have selected DePauw as the preseason favorite based on balloting in the annual preseason coaches’ poll.
The Tigers, who claimed their second-straight conference championship and first-ever NCAC Tournament title after defeating Wittenberg in the championship game a year ago, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting eight first-place votes and 79 total points. Wittenberg, which has advanced to two-straight NCAC Tournament finals, garnered the final first-place vote and finished behind DePauw in the poll with 67 points. Denison, eight-time conference champions, finished third with 61 points followed by Ohio Wesleyan (55) in fourth and Allegheny (51) rounding out the top five. Kenyon was predicted to finish sixth with 36 points and Oberlin checked in at seventh with 21 points. Hiram totaled 18 points to finish eighth in the poll, followed by Wooster in ninth with 17 total points. DePauw returns five batters that recorded 30 or more hits, including four with 40 plus hits from a lineup that led the league with 347 hits in 2014. Seniors Jennifer Ridge (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington North) and Taylor Golden (Chicago, IL/Trinity), along with juniors Sammi Bell (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge Senior) and Lindsey Button (Ballwin, MO/Lafayette), and sophomore Gabby Smart (Chicago, IL/ Trinity) combined for 207 hits (.322 BA), 114 of the Tigers’ 144 RBI, 110-of-199 runs scored, 17-of-19 home runs, 43-of-63 doubles and 309 total bases. In the circle, senior Kahla Nolan (West Chicago IL/Wheaton North) returns after leading the NCAC in wins (23), strikeouts (176), innings pitched (261.1) and appearances (43) in 2014. Leading DePauw in 2015 will be Erica Hanrahan, who enters her third year as head coach with a 49-37 record, two NCAC titles, a league tournament title and an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. Since the NCAC began sponsoring softball as a championship sport in 1998, five different teams have claimed conference championships. Denison leads the way in that grouping with eight titles (2001-03, ‘06, ‘07, 2009-11), while Allegheny has captured five (1998, ‘99, 2004, ’08, ’12), Ohio Wesleyan three (‘04, ‘05, ‘10), DePauw two (‘13, ‘14) and Wittenberg one (‘00). The NCAC instituted the conference tournament in 2001 to determine the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red have earned six tournament titles (‘01, ‘02, ‘06, ‘08, ’09, ’12), followed by Allegheny with four (‘04, ‘05, ’07, ‘13), Hiram with two (‘09, ‘11) and Wittenberg (’03) and DePauw (’14) each with one.
