Thinking about a change of scenery? With the Sun shining and the festival season well and truly underway now is a great time to take advantage of the myriad of work and lifestyle opportunities available to you throughout the UK. With 15 years of proven experience in international Nursing and Allied Health professional recruitment and as a leading healthcare recruitment agency PULSE are in the best position to facilitate your relocation and registration in the UK. At PULSE we always aim to provide you with the highest level of professional and personalised service but don’t just take our word for it though I invite you to read a letter from one of our nurses who has recently returned to Australia from London. PULSE was first recommended to me by a colleague in Sydney before I left for the UK in May 2009. She had worked for PULSE previously and spoke highly of her experience so they seemed like an obvious choice for me. I hadn’t contacted PULSE before I arrived in London, but in hindsight I wish I had, it would have helped me a lot! I wasn’t prepared at all for the UK NMC registration process and I had some initial problems with gaining my registration but throughout this whole process PULSE was extremely supportive and provided me with assistance and advice at every stage. Once I had received my decision letter from the NMC I was able to complete my ONP through PULSE in London which was really convenient. Whilst I was waiting on my UK registration PULSE were also able to provide me with work as a Health Care Assistant and they also helped me to get settled in the UK providing me with accommodation references and assistance with setting up a bank account. As a Health Care Assistant for PULSE, I had opportunities to work in different areas of nursing that I had not previously tried. I ended up working a lot as a Community Nurse and I found this work extremely interesting. It also gave me the opportunity to develop new skills and to explore London further. I continued to work in the community through PULSE once I had gained my nursing registration and ultimately this led to an opportunity to gain a sponsorship visa through one of the primary care trusts that PULSE work with. This means that I can continue my overseas experience and return to the UK for another few years. In the meantime as my working holiday visa has now expired I have returned to Sydney to obtain my sponsorship visa and while here I need to work. I knew that PULSE also had an office in Sydney so I called to find out about work opportunities here. The team at PULSE Sydney have been great and were able to have my file transferred from London so I didn’t have to do much paperwork from this end. I was able to start work almost immediately and I am now working through PULSE Australia in various hospitals throughout Sydney this has made the interim period so much easier. Working for PULSE has given me the opportunity not only to develop my nursing career but it also gave me the funds and flexibility to explore Europe and achieve many of my travel ambitions. If it had not been for PULSE I also would not have the opportunity to be returning to continue my overseas adventure and I am very grateful for this opportunity. I would highly recommend PULSE to anyone thinking about relocating to the UK. Amy, Community Nurse working with PULSE for two years To find out more about working overseas, Please contact Neralie directly at; +61 (0)2 9965 9459 or neralie@pulsestaffing.com.au or find us on the web at www.pulsejobs.com

Medicare locals to Nurse the System Back to Health Australian nursing groups have welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of the first 15 Medicare Locals. The Australian Nursing Federation and the Australian Practice Nurses Association have thrown their support behind the primary health reform initiative, which is expected to provide new opportunities for nurses.

“Some of the things we will continue to work with the Federal Government on are about governance structures, where nurses are included and also consumers. “The Federation has been particularly very supportive of many of the Federal Government’s initiatives in health and certainly Medicare Locals is one of those.”

ANF federal secretary Lee Thomas said the Medicare Locals would not only provide increased access for the community to a whole range of health professionals but also more opportunities for nurses.

APNA president Julianne Badenoch said nurses will be natural lead clinicians under the initiative.

“There is some scope there for a broader employment, more opportunities. What really Medicare Locals does is to broaden their horizons in access to the community,” she said.

Mental Health Nurse Program Needs Government Support The Federal Government needs to act to ensure the Mental Health Nurse Incentive Program remains a success, according to the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses.

that every day they are able to avert suicide attempts and admissions in hospital, and return people to work and education as a result of the MHNIP.

The ACMHN has outlined a raft of recommendations in a review publication on the program, in a bid to shift the focus from acute and hospital mental health care to care at a primary health level.

“Unless the government acknowledges the work of these nurses by ensuring an urgent review of the incentive payment, we will see a great opportunity lost.”

The Medicare-funded program, first launched in 2007, enables mental health nurses to collaborate with GPs and psychiatrists to deliver mental health services.

“Unless the government acknowledges the work of these nurses by ensuring an urgent review of the incentive payment, we will see a great opportunity lost.” More than 64,000 Australians have accessed the service, receiving assessment, physical health monitoring, counselling and recovery support. ACMHN CEO Kim Ryan said the government announced $334 million in the recent federal budget for new similar services for people with severe mental illness rather than investing in the existing program. “The government has to explain why it is establishing new services that will duplicate the work already being done under the MHNIP rather than invest in this existing program,” she said. “Mental health nurses continue to report www.ncah.com.au

MHNIP provides mental health nurses who are credentialed under the ACMHN’s Credential for Practice Program an opportunity to embark on a new career path into primary practice. In the publication, ACMHN president Peter Santangelo said the program offered new hope for people experiencing mental illness or disorder while showcasing mental health nursing professional practice “at its best”. “The ACMHN is invested in ensuring this innovative model of care continues to be delivered, developed and funded appropriately,” he said Copyright NCAH

New standards for mental health care by Nina Hendy Those working in Australia’s mental health sector have been implementing significant changes in recent months. These changes come after a leading Queensland mental health researcher led a national team to develop new standards for mental health care best practice to bridge the gap between conflicting standards and legislation in Australia. The University of Queensland’s program coordinator for the Master of Mental Health Nursing Association Professor Christine Neville worked with her team for two and a half years to develop the new Standards of Practice for Mental Health Nurses in Australia 2010 after extensive consultation with mental health nurses and other key stakeholders.

“Mental health nurses also need to bear in mind the importance of ethically based care...”

The new document details the increasingly important role that mental health nurses play in a person’s overall condition and any possibly recovery plan. According to Associate Professor Neville, the old standards created additional barriers to achieving mental health care best practice for patients. Since the development of the old standards in 1995, the context of mental health care has changed, and Associated Professor Neville says there have been extensive policy updates and further developments to the guiding principles for the delivery of mental health care in Australia. But these new standards reflect these changes and work to modernise mental health nursing practice, she says. “They will provide guidance for the type and level of care consumers and carers can expect from mental health nurses and help ensure optimal health outcomes are achieved for people with a mental health problem,” Professor Neville says. The new standards document the importance of mental health nurses ensuring that they are non-discriminatory, promote dignity and self-determination. The document also states the need for nurses to develop a therapeutic relationship, building on individual capacity and resilience to promote recovery. The importance of integrating local, state, national and international policies and guidelines along with the nursing profession’s careers@ncah.com.au

own code of conduct has also been listed among the standards that need to be considered by those working in the sector. Mental health nurses also need to bear in mind the importance of ethically based care that is consistent with the mental, physical, spiritual, emotional and cultural needs of people. Another key consideration is the professional contributions of other agencies and stakeholders in the delivery of holistic and evidence-based care and services for people affected by mental health problems. This means that nurses need to justify and accept responsibility for their own judgements and actions and will willingly seek and utilise outside assistance, the document says. And the importance of lifelong education, research and professional development www.ncah.com.au

was also documented. The new standard states that understanding the value of and utilising evidence based practice in care delivery is essential to promote best practice outcomes. A snapshot of Queensland’s mental health data reveals: • 12.2 per cent of Queenslanders reported experiencing a mental illness versus 10.6 per cent of Australians as a whole in 2006. This figure for Queensland increases by 4.6 per cent in 2002. • Queensland has the lowest number of mental health nurses per 100,000 people.
