Are you one of those people that has often thought about working in the UK and then said to themselves ‘sounds great but I wouldn’t know where to start’, then why not start with us. There are a few things that you do need to sort out before you make that leap of faith and getting them right makes your eventual trip here that much easier. I often hear candidates at interview say “but I registered with an agency in Australia and they never told me that I needed this or wouldn’t be able to do that”. It’s the little details that make a big difference and that’s where we come in. PJ Locums are based in London. We have been around for 10 years now and are pretty much the same team now as when we started so we all know what the business of finding people the right job is about. We are very thorough on our compliance and would ask that you collate all your information whilst still in Australia as it makes life so much easier and less expensive for you, such things as your immunisation history, many come to the UK thinking ‘Hep B yeah I have that’ but you don’t check and when you get here and your levels aren’t high enough to work in UK hospitals that’s what’s known in the trade as a ‘show stopper.’ Its been reported that there are not many jobs to be had here in the UK, not so for those candidates that fulfil the NMC/HPC criteria there is always work. Our best advice is ‘Keep an open mind and be flexible’ you can’t all work in London its just not big enough, but there are some great cities outside London that are just as big, just as near and just as great! At PJ Locums our view is that our nurses/locums work with us, not for us. Yes, you are the frontline ambassadors of our company which is why it is so important to us that we get it right. Want to join a friendly team that listens to you - then call or email today and make that leap. 0011 4 208 874 6111 julieanne@pjlocums.co.uk

NIB Allied Health Website Delayed The launch of a controversial website enabling NIB customers to score the performance of Australian allied health practitioners has been delayed. The health fund planned to launch its online service, Whitecoat.com.au, in late June but this week confirmed the site has been shelved while concerns are allayed. “NIB has delayed the launch of Whitecoat so any issues raised concerning the website can be fully addressed,” a spokesman said. The move comes after the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency said it would monitor the site amid concerns it could breach the HealthPractitioner Regulation National Law Act. The act prohibits the use of testimonial advertising while breaches carry a maximum penalty of $10,000. The site has also come under fire for its initial plan to use Medicare Australia information to create its list of 165,000 allied health practitioners. The NIB spokesman would not reveal when the site would go live but said the company remained committed to its launch. “It (NIB) strongly believes that Whitecoat will empower consumers by allowing them to make informed decisions about their health care,” he said.

Occupational Therapy Gets Smart More occupational therapists could soon be turning to iPads, iPhones and other smart technology to help patients recover from brain injury. New Australian research has found smart technology and applications can help counteract memory loss, helping patients remember day to day tasks such as taking medication and attending appointments. Researchers at Sydney’s Royal Rehabilitation Centre studied 42 people with brain injuries, mostly men with an average age of 35 years, over a three year period. One group was given diaries while others were given personal digital assistants (PDAs) to record information along with an hour of one-on-one PDA training each week across an eight week period. www.ncah.com.au

Occupational therapy professor leader Belinda Carr said the study found while diaries were useful in helping people improve their functional memory, smart technology was even better. “When patients experience a brain injury, some have a memory span of as little as five minutes,” she said. “This means they can have difficulty remembering to do everyday things… they face reduced levels of independence because many can’t remember names and faces or directions. “That’s why we’ve found equipment like iPads, iPhones and PDA’s make such a difference, because they help patients remember.” For the full article visit NCAH.com.au Copyright NCAH

Maternity Reforms Failing: ACM

Obstetricians are holding the Federal Government’s maternity reforms to ransom, according to the Australian College of Midwives.

Since Health Minister Nicola Roxon introduced the changes last November, only an estimated 40 midwives have become eligible to provide Medicare rebates to patients.

ACM spokesperson and University of Western Sydney associate professor of midwifery Hannah Dahlen said many obstetricians were refusing to enter into collaborative arrangements with midwives, as required under the reforms.

Ms Dahlen said it was time the government reviewed the need for a collaborative arrangement.

“Many of us have approached obstetricians and the answer has been no and sometimes the response has been ruder than no, along with - don’t contact us again, I will never collaborate with an independent midwife.

“The Minister was very clear that if these reforms do not work because there was a problem with not collaborating, she would re-look at the legislation,” she said. “It’s time now to re-look at this – it’s not working. There’s no evidence that this is going to lead to better care for women.”

“We knew that was going to happen.

Ms Dahlen said the “very low number” of eligible midwives was not surprising given a

similar agreement-based system in the United States had also failed.

“We want more choice not less. Obstetricians obviously find that incredibly threatening.”

“In the United States, midwives have successfully lobbied to overturn the legislation in about 10 states, based on the fact it was restricting women’s choice,” she said. Copyright NCAH

Agency insight: Caring for You by Belinda Smart Set up by a registered nurse and midwife with the objective of putting its nursing staff first, Caring for You has gained some unique insights into what makes for a rewarding agency experience. Once upon a time, agency nursing had something of the ring of a ‘fall back option’ about it, but according to Caring for You CEO Louise Thomson, agency nursing is increasingly seen as a preferred option, particularly among nurses new to the workplace or returning to it after a period away. Founded by Thomson, herself a nurse who had spent many years working for agencies and wanted to set up an agency “not operated by a corporation”, Caring for You

operates in both Queensland and Victoria, where, according to Thomson, opportunities for agency nurses are booming. “In both of these states the demand for agency nurses is constantly rising due to: RNs leaving full time employment due to work load stress; RNs seeking non handson nursing roles due to litigation stress and RNs leaving full time employment due to age – with the average age of an Australian RN approaching 50.” Other factors contributing to demand for agency nurses include Australia’s rapidly expanding aged care sector and the growth of the theatre surgery market, particularly in cosmetic surgery and specialised areas such as knee reconstructions. careers@ncah.com.au

“For ourselves we have our own in-house trainers for regular courses. Plus we use external trainers for specialist courses, often in conjunction with and at clients’ facilities, which are very popular. We also provide a wide range of online competences for free. In addition we also subsidise our members with additional training such as Certificate IVs so they can also be trainers.” Another upside of agency work is nurses’ freedom to choose when and where they work. “You can care for your patients and are not involved in the day to day politics that tend to permeate most work places.” Louise Thomson And of course, as always opportunities for agency nurses are also abundant in rural, remote and specialist nursing. “The lack of nurses is particularly felt in the rural/remote areas of Australia. In addition there is a real lack of specialist nurses such as theatre and critical care nurses, as well as midwives.” While agency work is often seen as failing to provide the security of full time work, Thomson says this perception is increasingly outdated. These days, the leading agencies’ pay is typically “substantially better” than full time pay. “It needs to be, in order to subsidise the nurse for the additional commitment that nursing agency work requires. Unlike a full time nurse who goes to the same place, an agency nurse needs to attend and work at various facilities, which is obviously more demanding.” And while one of the major benefits of permanent work is that in-house training is generally well regulated, Thomson says those agencies committed to nursing do invest in comprehensive training programs to ensure their nurses keep abreast of new developments. www.ncah.com.au

In assessing work opportunities, nurses should always keep an eye on professional development opportunities at their potential work place, says Thomson. “Ongoing training and professional development are extremely important for nurses and in fact are now regulated as a requirement for their ongoing registration. When looking at all nursing positions, whether agency or permanent, nurses need to look past the claims on websites that ‘we train’, to really investigate at the interview what is being provided. If of course the agency only wishes to employ over the phone or internet, then alarm bells should start to ring that they are not really committed to the quality or development of their personnel.” Agencies are increasingly dealing with the specific demands of agency nursing with a certain level of creativity, Thomson says. Over the years Caring for You itself has piloted a unique service for nurses, whereby it offers a ‘buddy shift’ program to assist nurses who are either new to a role or have been absent from it for some time and need to regain confidence. Sky’s The Limit For Nursing Careers Nurses and midwives can take their careers to the next level during the health workforce shortage, according to one of Australia’s leading recruitment agency experts.

options,” he said.

Healthcare Australia national and key accounts head Dr Greg Rickard said the agency, the country’s largest supplier of temporary and permanent nursing staff, is unable to meet workforce demand.

“When you think of the future over the next five to 10 years with all of the Baby Boomers retiring, particularly for new nurses, they will have the opportunity to really call the shots.”

“The ball is in their court. I would encourage them to be really going for it.

“We can’t meet demand. Our hospitals are coming to us because of their workforce requirements. We can supply but we certainly can’t meet all demand,” he said.

Dr Rickard said nurses were in demand particularly on the country’s east coast while mental health nurses, midwives, operating theatre and intensive care nurses were also in “significant demand”. And he said the time was right for nurses and midwives to take control of their careers. “There are so many opportunities for them, whether it is in the public or private sector, or working for an agency, there are so many

Dr Rickard, who previously worked as the Northern Territory State Government’s principal nursing and midwifery adviser, was awarded an Order of the Medal of Australia in the Queen’s Honours Birthday List earlier this month for his services to nursing. Dr Rickard said the agency, which supplies about 7000 nurses annually across Australia, had opportunities for nurses with the Defence Department and had also submitted a tender for customs and border patrol nursing opportunities. “There are a whole range of clients who are wanting nurses in particular - they are a very valued commodity,” he said. Push for Extended Care Paramedics in Victoria

Why do al the hard work yourself?

Recruiters in Australia, New Zealand and abroad wil start contacting you for op ortunit es that may be suitable.

The introduction of extended care paramedics in Victoria would relieve the strain on the over-stretched ambulance service and overburdened hospital emergency departments, according to the state’s paramedics union. Ambulance Employees Association Victoria general secretary Steve McGhie said the relatively new ambulance concept, similar to paramedic practitioners in some overseas countries, could result in low-risk patients being treated safely at home rather than being transported to hospital. Extended-care paramedics in New South Wales and South Australia can prescribe antibiotics, stitch wounds and unblock catheters. “We have got to reduce the demands on hospitals and start treating people in their own environment,” Mr McGhie said.

Mr McGhie said the measure would require a new level of training for paramedics. In New South Wales, a three–year trial of extended-care paramedics has kept 10,000 patients out of the state’s hospitals. Figures show four in 10 patients treated by extended care paramedics did not end up in hospital compared with two in 10 seen by other paramedics, while each patient treated at home saved the state’s health department $255. The South Australian Ambulance Service has also introduced extended care paramedics after a successful six-month trial. Under the SA system, an extended care paramedic assesses the patient’s requirements through phone consultation before dispatching an ECP single responder in an ambulance response vehicle as opposed to a traditional stretcher-carrying ambulance.

“We need more paramedics but we also need to look into different levels of ambulance service. www.ncah.com.au

“They could prescribe certain drugs and insert catheters…a lot of things could be dealt with at home.”

First Flying Breast Care Nurse

The first breast care nurse will soon take flight with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The 67th McGrath Foundation breast care nurse will be based at the RFDS base in Broken Hill and will fly across rural and remote areas from far west New South Wales to south west Queensland and north eastern South Australia to support breast cancer affected families. The full-time position is the first of its kind for the not-for-profit RFDS, which has been flying health care services to the furthest corners of Australia since 1928. The breast care nurse position will be advertised and is expected to be filled within two to three months. “The position will be an invaluable and muchneeded addition to our primary health care team, providing support and empowering families through accurate and timely information and referral services during what www.ncah.com.au

is naturally a very stressful time,” RFDS south eastern chief medical officer Dr Anne Wakatama said. Last year the RFDS performed more than 38,000 aerial evacuations and is at the frontline of delivering essential health care through its ‘fly around’ clinics, staffed with doctors, nurses and specialists. There are now 62 McGrath breast care nurses working in communities right across Australia and an additional five locations have been identified for recruitment this year. McGrath Foundation’s Tracy Bevan said it was a proud day for the foundation and one that came three years since Jane McGrath lost her battle with breast cancer. The RFDS breast care nurse position was funded through Elders, which has raised more than $330,000 in the past three years for the McGrath Foundation. Copyright NCAH
