Nursing & Midwifery Education in 2010 By Bridget Willett 2010 has seen major changes for the health professions. Nursing and midwifery education accreditation has followed registration and gone national. What will this mean for nurses and midwives? Until very recently, all nursing and midwifery courses have been assessed and accredited in each state and territory, which has created variations in course requirements and levels of education. This in turn has caused some confusion when nurses and midwives have applied to register in other states and territories with different requirements. That is all set to change as nursing and midwifery education accreditation has been taken over by
a national body. This move will ensure that the standards set for nursing and midwifery courses in Australia are of a consistent and high quality, which will turn out nurses and midwives with the skills and competency levels to produce the best possible care, no matter where they work. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council took on the role of accreditation of nursing and midwifery education in July this year to coincide with national registration. It recognises that in order to have safe and competent nurses and midwives, their qualifications, and the education facility that provided them, must meet professional practice standards. Vivien Biggs, Real QUT Graduate When Vivien Biggs completed her university nursing training in Sydney almost 20 years ago, she vowed never to return to uni. “University was very different then and lots of subjects didn’t seem relevant,” she said. But a passion for the care of neurosurgery patients led her to change her mind. During July Vivien graduated with a Masters in Nursing Science (Nurse Practitioner) from Queensland University of Technology. “I spent the last 20 years at the bedside working in neurosurgery as a clinical nurse specialist,” she explained. She worked in this role in public and private hospitals, caring for neurosurgery patients many with brain tumours - until a Queensland Cancer Council support meeting triggered her desire to go back to university to become a nurse practitioner. “I realised that for patients in this area there were lots of gaps in the service,” she said. Vivien said nurse practitioners worked collaboratively with other health professionals to help fill gaps by coordinating services.

Neurosurgery passion fulfilled by masters
“Patients often go from surgery to oncology and don’t understand the full implications of their diagnosis and the goals of their treatment,” she said. “Their symptoms can be managed poorly because each specialist is only looking after one aspect of the patient. “I’m right there at the very beginning when they are diagnosed and I follow them right throughout this journey.” To qualify for this role, Vivien enrolled parttime in 2008 in a QUT masters degree, encouraged by her employer, BrizBrain and Spine, a group of private neurosurgeons who supported her financially, with time off and with mentoring. “The QUT course was a delight,” she said. “The lecturers not only help you in the classroom but in your workplace. “My attitude has changed 360 degrees. Never say ‘never go back to university’ because it’s been really worthwhile.” Find out more about your study options at our online information evening on Wednesday 6 October. The Graduate Certificate offered a program that was perfect for me. The part-time course structure allowed me to easily balance part-time study with full-time work, and gave me a renewed confidence in my clinical knowledge and abilities. It really reignited my passion for paediatric nursing.
