Can IT lead to a radical redesign of health care? This is a very interesting question, since computers, the Internet, telehealth and other powerful technologies are making increasing inroads into the practice of health professionals. A number of trends are occurring. First, with the Internet, patients now have access to the same information, knowledge and guidelines as the health professional. Second, health professionals themselves are increasingly using the Internet for information and support. A third trend is the increasing use of information management technology by health professionals. Most health practices use a computer to some degree, even if they do not have a full electronic health record. These developments are shaping the behaviour of both patients and health professionals, regardless of how we feel about them. ‘Health professionals who understand information technologies and the impact they are having will be more able to more effectively incorporate them into their practice,’ said University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) academic Sue Whetton. Sue coordinates the E-Health (Health Informatics) program at the UDRH and argues that the study of health informatics is very relevant both for those faced with adopting IT into their practice and the health professional thinking of moving into the health informatics field. The program adopts a social focus, emphasising the people aspects of health information management. Sue finds that students thoroughly enjoy this approach as they learn the skills and knowledge of health informatics.

These e-health courses are appropriate for both health professionals involved in adopting information management tools into their daily work flow and for those interested in moving into the emerging field of health informatics. H5E Graduate Certificate in E-Health (Health Informatics) This is a part-time course comprising four compulsory units. All units are one semester in length.

H6E Graduate Diploma of E-Health (Health Informatics) This part-time course builds on the certificate course, and consists of one additional compulsory unit and three extra electives. All units are one semester in length.

Courses are external, self-paced learning packages using electronic and/or printbased materials. They can be completed with a minimum of disruption to home and work life as there is no compulsory residential component. Fees: Commonwealth Supported Applications for 2011 are open. To become a registered nurse, it is necessary to complete a Bachelor of Nursing program that can be completed in three years of full time study (or equivalent part time attendance) Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Nursing degree, the graduate will have attained the competency level set by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) and be eligible to apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board (of) Australia (NMBA) for entry into the register. Following registration, the nurse can then enter a professional practice program (Graduate Nurse Program) in Nephrology Nursing. Nephrology nurses must hold a registered nurse registration and graduate from an advanced (graduate) training program that will include study in clinical as well as theoretical aspects of CKD treatments.

There is a severe shortage of nephrology nurses throughout Australia. In New South Wales alone, it is estimated that the number of CKD patients will increase each year at a rate of about 3.6 percent. However, this rate of increase varies from 3.2 percent to 6.8 percent according to specific state and territory risk factors. This situation translates into a high demand for nephrology nurses through the year 2020. Job Outlook The post-registration/professional entry degree is studied on a full-time basis over an 18 month period (or equivalent part time study). To gain admittance to a postregistration/professional degree program, candidates must be a registered midwife and hold a current practicing certificate.

Education and Training Requirements Concepts of renal transplant Circulatory process for haemodialysis Principles of dialysis treatment Psychosocial aspects of CKD Nutrition Pharmacology Nephrology nursing practice Anatomy and physiology The nephrology nurse must possess knowledge in each of the following areas: Qualifications • Coordinating care with multidisciplinary health care team • Acute dialysis, with the goal being to reduce morbidity and extend life

A resume that shows a lot of jobs need to reflect those changes in a positive light so you don’t look like a job-hopper, says Linda Enever, general manager of general recruitment firm www.ncah.com.au

How to nail the interview

you

So if you’d like to throw your hat in the ring and get a new job this year, here’s what you need to know.

not make it

Alex Burns, CEO of recruitment firm Health Staff Australia says the new year will be a good one for jobseekers, because employer offerings increase in value during periods of low unemployment. There are also massive shortages for nurses across the country. Health is now Australia’s largest and fastestgrowing industry, having overtaken retail earlier this year. And given the huge number of vacancies in the market right now, nurses can cherry pick the best jobs on offer.

The Bloomfield Mental Health facility is regarded across NSW as one of the most specialised facilities in the state and has achieved state and national recognition for many of its innovative programs. n

you

We invite health professionals to join our award winning service and work together in our state of the art facility.

Recruitment firm Your World Medical says the hunt for quality nursing staff is ongoing. “Specialist nurses working in key areas such as maternity, intensive care and theatre are in very high demand, and we’ll be looking to boost our database with candidates in these areas in the new year,” Australian manager, Kristofer Bunker says. Dr Mary Casey, CEO of NSW’s Casey Centre, which employs more than 200 nurses and trains more than 500 assistant nurses and carers each year, says it’s an employee’s market in the nursing industry, which makes it very easy for nurses to change jobs.

For all enquiries contact Tracy on (02) 6360 7760 or 0419 391 078 or e: loveyourlife@gwahs.health.nsw.gov.au Or apply online at http://nswhealth.erecruit.com.au The facility boasts a range of services including adult acute beds, mental health intensive care unit, mental health high dependency unit, child and adolescent inpatient beds, older persons mental it ake health units, rehabilitation and forensic services. ot m

“In addition to these specialist areas, we’ll also be searching for candidates who have skills and an interest in working within aged care facilities. There is a huge shortage within the aged care nursing sector across Australia at the moment.”

With the recent expansion of services, the Bloomfield campus will be the largest regional facility in Australia for the provision of inpatient mental health services.

The Bloomfield Campus in Orange is “the place to be” for mental health professionals.

Join us in 2011 - Exciting Mental Health Career Opportunities! And while experience is certainly important, good communication skills, passion and dedication are also being judged during the interview process, according to Bunker. Enever says when going to an interview, candidates should allow enough time to find where the interview is being held so they arrive relaxed. “Be prepared with some examples of how you have handled similar situations before and draw on your past experience to show how you can transfer skills from your current role into your new one,” Enever says. To stand out during the interview process, candidates need to be confident, composed and know the sector and organisation they’re interviewing for. FC Recruitment. “Your role changes should be a step up, relocation or show you have been head-hunted. Your previous roles should also be listed to show longevity and stability within an organisation.”

The start of a new year signals a migration period for many nurses, with job-swapping commonplace during this time. It’s certainly worth considering. A career in nursing continues to be in high demand, with the health system crying out for quality staff with varying skills and competencies. Here’s what you need to know to land your dream job.

“We pay attention to the way someone talks about previous positions and organisations they’ve worked in, because it offers real insight into their attitude to work.

you applied for; and even smarter to let them know the skills the employer is looking for so they can sell those for you when called,” she says.

“And while often an after-thought, we also look for people who take pride in their appearance, as this can communicate a lot to prospective employers and patients,” Bunker says.

But references aren’t as important in some interview situations. Dr Casey says: “A reference from a work colleague who has worked closely with the candidate and is more of a friend is not worth the paper they are written on.”

Dr Casey agrees that presentation is vital. “If a candidate turns up to an interview in a T-shirt and jeans (which has happened to us before), it’s clear they aren’t interested in a professional look. I’ve seen that lack of professionalism filter all the way through their work and their relationship with colleagues. Dr Casey says she wants to find her candidates strengths and weaknesses in an interview and evaluate their coping mechanisms. “I find out how they respond to change and emergencies by giving them scenarios and asking them leftfield questions.” Basic attributes like clean nails, a genuine smile, good manners, appropriate attire, industry knowledge and interactivity are also important to prospective employers, according to Ken Blaikie, executive director, clinical services at Brisbane’s Jacaranda Healthcare. “A skilled, motivated and adaptable individual can change roles within their stream and also transpose those skills across disciplines. In sought after roles, candidates must be able to demonstrate the skills required for the role, be it a high level position, in-depth knowledge or the ability to think on one’s feet,” Blaikie says.

How important are referees?

For more information, talk to Donna Gould or Sarah Quinn in the Medacs Healthcare nursing team .

Enever says it’s important to be sure your referees knew you and how you tackled your previous role, but that they also still know you today. “Someone who can’t tell the interviewer what you did and your value to the team is of no value to you. And remember, It’s good manners to call your referees and let them know the role

Contact Us Email: nurses@medacs.com.au Telephone: 1800 059 790 For a full list of our opportunities around the world go to: www.medacs.com.au

In a tight-knit sector of professionals such as health, your referees reflect who you know as well and what you know.

She says when seeking a referee, it’s always best to speak to the candidate’s current supervisor. “If that’s not possible, we will speak to their previous supervisor, but if they worked with the candidate more than two years ago, the reference can’t be relied on. It’s important that we call the referee at their work number – not mobile phones or home – and during work hours. We do this to ensure we are definite about who we are talking to.” But more often than not, referees will provide a good reference. “We find that the biggest question is if they would re-employ that person. “In addition to these specialist areas, we’ll also be searching for candidates who have skills and an interest in working within aged care facilities. There is a huge shortage within the aged care nursing sector across Australia at the moment.” Recruitment firm Your World Medical says the hunt for quality nursing staff is ongoing. The start of a new year signals a migration period for many nurses, with job-swapping commonplace during this time. It’s certainly worth considering. A career in nursing continues to be in high demand, with the health system crying out for quality staff with varying skills and competencies. Here’s what you need to know to land your dream job.

We invite health professionals to join our award winning service and work together in our state of the art facility. With the recent expansion of services, the Bloomfield campus will be the largest regional facility in Australia for the provision of inpatient mental health services.

How to land your dream job “We pay attention to the way someone talks about previous positions and organisations they’ve worked in, because it offers real insight into their attitude to work. “And while often an after-thought, we also look for people who take pride in their appearance, as this can communicate a lot to prospective employers and patients,” Bunker says.

In a tight-knit sector of professionals such as health, your referees reflect who you know as well and what you know. Enever says it’s important to be sure your referees knew you and how you tackled your previous role, but that they also still know you today. “Someone who can’t tell the interviewer what you did and your value to the team is of no value to you. And remember, It’s good manners to call your referees and let them know the role

you applied for; and even smarter to let them know the skills the employer is looking for so they can sell those for you when called,” she says. But references aren’t as important in some interview situations. Dr Casey says: “A reference from a work colleague who has worked closely with the candidate and is more of a friend is not worth the paper they are written on.” She says when seeking a referee, it’s always best to speak to the candidate’s current supervisor. If there are hesitations or half-hearted answers, it sounds a warning bell for us.” Dr Casey doesn’t rely on references on referees to make a decision about a candidate, saying the reference should simply confirm what the employer is thinking or feeling about the candidate. Blaikie agrees that good interviewers look beyond referees. “Another important consideration is the industry network of the interviewer. This is where the off the record discussions regarding a candidate are made.” And while the interview process might be a challenge, Dr Casey admits it’s an employee’s market, which makes it very easy for nurses to change jobs. “Most facilities are always looking for new staff in all areas of nursing, such as general, aged care, disability care and palliative care.”

Depar tment of Rural Health

Flight Nurse

H6E Graduate Diploma of E-Health (Health Informatics) This part-time course builds on the certificate course, and consists of one additional compulsory unit and three extra electives. All units are one semester in length.

Courses are external, self-paced learning packages using electronic and/or printbased materials. They can be completed with a minimum of disruption to home and work life as there is no compulsory residential component. Fees: Commonwealth Supported Applications for 2011 are open.
