WEEK 1 KICKING IT OFF WITH LIVE WORKSHOPS
Your PLT training will begin with five days of live workshops (online or on campus).
These workshops will give you the opportunity to start building your new real-world skills – such as client interviewing, negotiation and advocacy.
You’ll also gain insights and tips from highly qualified instructors to prepare you for the day-today demands (and rewards) of working in a legal practice.
Workshops include:
• Advocacy
• Interviewing clients
• Writing and drafting
• Negotiation and dispute resolution
• Wellbeing in practice
• Ethical decision making
Whether you participate online or on campus, these workshops are highly interactive with many opportunities to engage with your Facilitator and classmates.
WEEK 2 – 15 COMPLETING YOUR ONLINE COURSEWORK
After the workshops, your learning will take place on the Learning Portal - the home for your learning materials, announcements, deadlines etc.
You’re in charge of your time during your coursework. We’ll hold you to a set end date and interim milestones; the rest is up to you.
Each subject consits of:
• Virtual Practice
• Weekly Huddle Sessions
• A Progress Quiz
• A File Review
You will complete one subject at a time, completing the tasks before moving on to the next subject.
STUDYING ONLINE DOESN’T MEAN STUDYING ALONE.
Learn the skills to transition from classroom to courtroom, with a lawyer by your side. Your Facilitator will guide you through each subject and provide constructive feedback — so you will be ready for the day-to-day realities of legal practice.
1. VIRTUAL PRACTICE
Unlike university, instead of just sitting in lectures, studying, and taking exams, you will complete and submit real-world tasks that simulate legal practice. It’s learning by doing.
During each week, you can expect to submit 2-3 tasks. Your Facilitator will provide individual feedback on your tasks so you can feel confident you’re ready to bring your new skills to work. You don’t need fear making mistakes as these tasks aren’t graded.
SUBJECT
Lawyer’s Skills
VIRTUAL PRACTICE EXAMPLE
Prepare and perform an examination-in-chief of a witness or perform the cross-examination.
Ethics and Professional Responsibility Act as a lawyer who has to consider whether certain information you have received should be disclosed.
Civil Litigation Practice
Make an ex parte interlocutory application on behalf of your client:
• Draft the affidavits and orders
• Prepare a summary of your submissions
• Present your application
Property Practice
Act for a seller of residential property to prepare a draft sale contract, including special conditions meeting the particular circumstances of the client.
Commercial and Corporate Practice
Prepare a presentation on appropriate business structures for a client's proposed enterprise.
2. WEEKLY HUDDLE SESSION (OPTIONAL)
You have the option to join a weekly online group session to help you stay on track, and work through anything that comes up. These 30-minute sessions are your time to ask any questions and get support from your Facilitator and classmates.
3. PROGRESS QUIZ
At the end of each subject, you’ll sit a Progress Quiz. The Progress Quiz helps you better gauge where you are in your understanding of key concepts.
To successfully complete the quiz, you need to score at least 50%. If you don’t score 50% on your first try— don’t fret! You can retake the quiz, improving your score with each run.
The Progress Quiz is not about giving you a grade but boosting your confidence in your new skills.
4. FILE REVIEW
There are no exams in the workplace, and there won’t be any in the Practical Legal Training program.
To complete your subject, you will sit a File Review. Our File Reviews reflect real-life, so you are prepared to deliver what’s asked of you in the workplace.
Your File Review mimics a constructive conversation a junior law has with their senior supervising lawyer.
You will be given a case file and your Facilitator will step into the shoes of a supervisor. Over 40-minutes, you’ll discuss with your supervisor how and why you’ve settled on the conclusions you’ve reached. During your conversation you also have the chance to seek guidance and advice from your supervisor. They will ask questions, encouraging you to articulate your reasoning.
And most importantly, yes, they are open book!
After completing your File Review, you will move on to your next subject.
