The North Carolina Museum of Art, Valerie Hillings, director, is the art museum of the State of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, governor, and an agency of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Susi H. Hamilton, secretary. on the cover:

FROM THE DIRECTOR

JUNE 2019 Welcome, Johnny Burleson! Director of Development

Johnny Burleson, who joined the NCMA staff on March 25, is charged with setting the strategy for the Museum’s fundraising efforts to support special exhibitions, acquisitions, the Museum Park, and the care of the permanent collection. He manages the Museum’s development team, including the membership program. Burleson brings 18 years of experience in philanthropy, most recently leading the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation’s development of local, state, and national relationships to bring philanthropic and federal resources to the state. He previously worked at Appalachian State University and UNC–Chapel Hill’s School of Government.

Friends, There’s always a new reason to visit your North Carolina Museum of Art. This summer, there are many! The Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park is alive with exciting installations with connections to North Carolina. Heather Hart’s Southern Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off, a submerged, rainbow-striped rooftop sculpture, was inspired by North Carolina native George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic album Mothership Connection. Near the new Meadow Trail, Seagrovebased artist Daniel Johnston is placing 183 hand-formed, wood-fired ceramic pillars into the landscape. They’re made from Piedmont clay and vary in height from several inches to over 6 feet.

A native of North Carolina, Burleson attended North Carolina State University. He has a National Historic Register farm in Ashe County, where he manages 4,000 blueberry bushes and six beehives.

Inside East Building, Wim Botha: Still Life with Discontent brings together site-specific sculptures, busts made of books, and a series of paintings on the myth of Leda and the Swan. This internationally acclaimed South African artist’s first North American solo exhibition is on view through August 4, with a complementary installation at 21c Museum Hotel in Durham. Getting to our campus is also easier than ever. We now have two bus stops connected to GoRaleigh’s bus route 27, located at District Drive and the main entrance near Reedy Creek Road, and we’ll soon be part of Raleigh’s new Citrix Cycle bike-share program. Finally, I am thrilled to welcome Johnny Burleson, our new director of development, to the Museum. You can learn more about him in the sidebar. I hope to see you at a summer concert or movie, or any of the many special programs on the calendar this season, and thank you for your support. With appreciation and my best, Seagrove-based artist Daniel Johnston looks over the foundation for his Museum Park installation. This addition to our permanent collection consists of 183 hand-formed, wood-fired ceramic pillars made from Piedmont clay. The project is generously supported by Pat and Tom Gipson.

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A GRAIN MUMMY? July 20, 2019–January 8, 2020 West Building, Mesoamerican Gallery f r e e ; no ticket required

While researching the ancient Egyptian collection, NCMA Egyptologist Caroline Rocheleau discovered that an object in the Museum’s collection once thought to be a falcon mummy is, in fact, a grain mummy. Rocheleau is curating What in the World Is a Grain Mummy? to present this humble bundle and its falcon-shaped coffin for the first time and to unravel the mysteries of the NCMA’s only Egyptian mummy. Organized by the North Carolina Museum of Art. Additional support for Caroline Rocheleau’s curatorial research on the Egyptian collection was made possible by GSK.

Egyptian, Falcon Coffin and Grain Mummy, 332 B.C.E.–330 C.E., wood, gesso, gilding, paint, linen, Nile mud, grains, and wax, Coffin case: H. 193⁄8 × W. 61⁄4 × D. 21⁄2 in., Gift of the James G. Hanes Memorial Fund

WIM BOTHA: STILL LIFE WITH DISCONTENT Through August 4, 2019 East Building, Joyce W. Pope Gallery and Atrium free; no ticket required

Organized by the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, and 21c Museum Hotels, Durham. All exhibitions are made possible, in part, by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources; the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, Inc.; and the William R. Kenan Jr. Endowment for Educational Exhibitions. Research is made possible by Ann and Jim Goodnight/The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fund for Curatorial and Conservation Research and Travel.
