FROM THE DIRECTOR
DECEMBER 2018
Dear Members and Friends, Greetings from the North Carolina Museum of Art! It is an honor to write to you as the new director of the museum that I visited time and again during my college years. I am so proud to have returned to lead the NCMA at this exciting moment in its history. Through its remarkable collection, inspiring exhibitions and programs, and stunning Museum Park, the NCMA offers compelling encounters with art and community. This winter’s offerings are no exception, and I hope we will have the chance to welcome all of you, as well as your friends and members of your families, to the Museum in the months ahead. One of my favorite aspects of my work in museums has been having the chance to meet members and hear what they love about art and what draws them to keep coming back to and supporting the institution. Though I’m in my first days as director of the NCMA, I am already certain that friends like you are behind every success and milestone in our history. I am looking forward to meeting you and getting your feedback so that together we can ensure that the NCMA continues to be a place where one can have fun while exploring the stories and ideas that have preoccupied humankind from antiquity to today. I want to thank you for being treasured members of the NCMA community, and I invite you to join us as we imagine and realize an exciting future for the North Carolina Museum of Art. With appreciation and my best,
What’s our new director’s favorite work in the NCMA collection? Read a Q&A with Valerie Hillings on Circa at ncartmuseum.org/blog.

Director Armando Iannucci (In the Loop, Veep) brings his barbed humor to this black-as-pitch political satire. Joseph Stalin is dead, and his cutthroat lieutenants engage in a high-stakes struggle to succeed him as supreme leader. In their craven pursuit of power, it’s every comrade for himself, and missteps can prove fatal. “Orwell on helium” (Time Out). I NT RO DU CED BY J O HN MU NSO N. JA NUA RY 1 1
BEING THERE (1979) Directed by Hal Ashby. Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, Melvyn Douglas (130 min.) PG: DCP. A childlike man’s pithy observations are mistaken for political wisdom, and he is lionized by Washington insiders. Chance the gardener speaks in educated tones and wears his late employer’s tailored suits, bestowing instant credibility on his pronouncements. Biltmore Estate stands in for the D.C. home of an ailing millionaire. “A rare and subtle bird that finds its tone and stays with it” (Roger Ebert). I NT RO DU CED BY L AU RA B OY ES. JA NUA RY 1 8
THE KING OF COMEDY (1982) Directed by Martin Scorsese. Robert De Niro, Jerry Lewis, Sandra Bergman. (109 min.) PG. DCP. An aspiring comic living in his mother’s New Jersey basement is convinced he deserves a shot with the king of late night. An everyday schlub, hungry for fame, he stalks his idol, a career plan that takes increasingly desperate turns. “It's very funny, and it ends on a high note that was, for me, both a total surprise and completely satisfying” (New York Times). GIRLS ABOUT TOWN (1931) Directed by George Cukor. Kay Francis, Lilyan Tashman, Joel McCrea. (80 min.) 35mm print from Universal Archive. Two good-hearted, gold-digging “party girls” exploit their rich escorts with a clear conscience. Teaming up with a wronged wife for some sweet revenge proves sisterhood is powerful. This risqué pre-Code comedy was a favorite at the last TCM Film Festival. “Under George Cukor’s direction (this was only the second film he directed on his own) their adventures are more elegant than lewd” (tcm.com). THE BIRDS OF AMERICA BACK ON VIEW
FEBRUARY 16, 2019–DECEMBER 31, 2020 | EAST BUILDING, LEVEL B
The NCMA presents its beautifully restored edition of Audubon’s masterpiece in special cases designed for each of the enormous “double elephant” volumes, with hydraulic lifts that allow staff access so that the pages can be turned periodically to display a new selection of gorgeous birds. John James Audubon | Fast Facts BORN: “Illegitimate” in 1785, on his father’s sugar plantation in Saint Domingue (now Haiti); he came from France to America at age 18. DIED: 1851, New York, N.Y. PERSONAL SEAL: Featured in miniature his famous Wild Turkey with the words “America My Country.” BIRDS AS PLAYMATES: Audubon reminisced that from a young age, “None but aerial companions suited my fancy.” LIFE’S AMBITION: To create a collection of life-size bird drawings “not only valuable to the scientific class but pleasing to every person.” PRECISION BEFORE PHOTOGRAPHY: Audubon complained that ornithologists drew “stiff, unmeaning profiles” from stuffed specimens; he did his own hunting and used a mounting board and wires to set birds in dramatic, lifelike positions, often in the act of catching their favorite prey. RARE: Today only about 200 complete sets of The Birds of America are known to exist.
