SESSION DESCRIPTIONS 8:15 AM – 9:15 AM FINDING THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOUR CAREER OR BUSINESS Tim Hammerich, Founder, Ag Grad Come discover the new methods of hiring or being hired in agriculture, as well as those strategies that have withstood the test of time.

PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT TO REDUCE DISEASE CHALLENGES

Robin Falkner, DVM, Cattle/Equine Technical Services, Zoetis Although pathogens responsible for causing diseases are circulating daily within a herd, producers and veterinarians may not notice a problem until a management practice changes these dynamics. Building a solid management foundation on sound biosecurity and biocontainment principles, not sole reliance on testing and vaccination, is critical to protect herds from both nagging and catastrophic losses.

THEY WANT WHAT?

Nathan Pike, MS, Strategic Marketing and Technology Leader, Cargill; Bill Thoni, Vice President Cattle Procurement, Cargill; Heather Tansey, MS, Sustainability Director, Cargill Consumer demands for sustainability are changing, but it’s not always feasible for producers to justify some of the demanded change.

FACT OR FICTION

Darrh Bullock, PhD, eBeef Team, Extension Professor, Beef Cattle Genetics, University of Kentucky Join this session to discuss what is fact, what is fiction and why. Most importantly, learn how you can use genetic prediction tools to improve cattle selection strategies on your operation.

GRAZING SYSTEMS FOR THE SOUTH

John Jennings, PhD, Professor and Extension Forage Specialist, Department of Animal Sciences, University of Arkansas; Kim Mullenix, PhD, Assistant Professor and Beef Cattle Extension Specialist, Department of Animal Sciences, Auburn University This session will provide an overview of bermudagrass and bahiagrass-based forage systems used in the Southeastern U.S., including a review of the recommended varieties, expected yields, potential stocking rate and animal performance expectations during the summer months, potential improvements with the addition of legume species, and animal

performance expectations of winter annual forages that have been overseeded into bahiagrass/bermudagrass for winter grazing.

MANAGING THROUGH A NATURAL DISASTER Christine Navarre, DVM, Extension Veterinarian, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center; John Locke, J.D. Huggins, Inc. – Locke Division In this session join John Coleman Locke, a rancher from south Texas who along-with his family and livestock weathered catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Harvey. He will give a personal account of his experiences dealing with this crisis and its immediate threats, as well as navigating the emotions and the aftermath of a natural disaster. Joining John Locke will be Christine Navarre, DVM, Louisiana extension veterinarian, who will provide expert advice on managing through a natural disaster.

PROGRAMMING YOUR COW HERD FOR SUCCESS

Amanda Blair, PhD, Professor & Extension Meat Science Specialist, South Dakota State University; Janna Kincheloe, PhD, Extension Livestock Specialist, North Dakota State University This session will explore the concept of fetal programming, provide an overview of research in beef cattle and address the influence of nutrient restriction on offspring growth performance, carcass composition and meat quality.

UTILIZING REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGIES

Sandy Johnson, PhD, Professor & Extension Specialists, Kansas State University; David Patterson, PhD, Professor of Animal Science, University of Missouri This session will discuss reproductive technologies being developed or used in beef females and the most recent data for successful synchronization and AI in both Bos Taurus and Bos Indicus-influenced cattle.

9:30 AM – 10:30 AM MARKETING YOUR OPERATION

Rachel Cutrer, Ranch House Designs, Founder & CEO/ V8 Ranch; Ashley Grant, Ranch House Designs, Chief Marketing Officer Have you ever been in your pasture and thought “My cattle look great... but how do I get more people to know about them?” This session will cover marketing and promoting your cattle operation through web, social, email, photography and print.

ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE: IS IT EVERYWHERE?

Terry Arthur, PhD, Research Microbiologist, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center The increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human disease is a global health crisis. Speculation has been growing that antimicrobial use in food animal production is having a large effect on the increase in AMR observed in human clinical cases. Currently, associations are made between antimicrobial use in livestock populations and AMR in the associated environments without accounting for the ecological dynamics of AMR in native bacterial populations. This session will cover the impacts of nutrient enrichment and antimicrobial selection on the occurrence of AMR in livestock environments.

THE LATEST ON MEAT SUBSTITUTES

Danielle Beck, Director of Government Affairs, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association; Mandy Carr - Johnson, PhD, Senior Executive Director, Science & Product Solutions, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Join us for the latest look at how the beef industry is actively maintaining our place as the number one protein and an overview of the regulatory environment surrounding this topic.

CROSSBREEDING – A CATTLEMEN’S FREE RIDE

Bob Weaber, PhD, eBeef Team, Professor/ Extension Specialist, Kansas State University We often hear in business that, there are no free lunches. But, in genetics there can be! Come learn how you can make simple, structured, sustainable, and successful decisions to use crossbreeding in your herd. Managed heterosis, simple breeding systems and breed complementarity are the key value drivers we will discuss

MANAGING A DYNAMIC SYSTEM FROM YOUR SOIL TO THE FEEDYARD

Hugh Aljoe, Director, Producer Relations, Noble Research Institute, LLC Our farms/ranches are dynamic, biological systems requiring countless decisions each day. These decisions affect our soil, pasture and water resources, our equipment, our animals and their health, and ultimately, our bottom line. Designing and following a management plan is where it starts. Management plans reflect our values, our resources, and our goals, but they also help us manage individual issues--not in isolation--but relative to competing interests and the “system” of our operations.

INTERNATIONAL BEEF TRADE – WHAT NEXT?

Sara Place, PhD, Senior Director of Sustainable Beef Production Research, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Cattle are acting as “upcyclers” in our food system: rather than simply recycling, cattle are upgrading humaninedible plants and food waste into a high-quality and delicious protein, and essential micronutrients. In fact, cattle are more efficient at converting plants to high-quality protein than pigs and chickens. With the popularity of “plant-based” proteins, it’s time to take stock of beef’s contribution to the food system. Cattle are a mobile, self-replicating, fertilizing, solarpowered technology producing the original plantbased protein – beef.

UNRAVELING SECRETS OF THE RUMEN

Tim McCallister, PhD, Principal Research Scientist, Ruminant Nutrition & Microbiology, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Think you live in a complicated world? Well, be glad you are not a rumen bug. This session will highlight the efforts to “Unravel the Secrets of the Rumen” for improved beef cattle health and production efficiency. Attend this session to gain new insight on how to make this fascinating microbial ecosystem work in your favor.

KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL BREEDING PROGRAM

George Perry, PhD, Professor, South Dakota State University; Adam Summers, PhD, Assistant Professor, New Mexico State University Successfully implementing reproductive technologies in your herd involves more than just a few activities at the start of the breeding season. Implementing a successful breeding program requires attention to details and begins with the selection and proper development of heifers. Furthermore, the success of the breeding season is impacted by how cows are managed throughout the year. In this section learn how your overall herd management can impact the success of your breeding season.

10:45 AM – 11:45 AM FARMING WITHOUT THE BANK

Mary Jo Irmen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, FiscalBridge, LLC. In this session Mary Jo Irmen will share the farm finance strategy allowing farmers to take back control, save family farms for generations and create a retirement that does not involve selling the farm. Learn how this 100-year-old strategy works by seeing real numbers and real strategies at any age. You’ll walk away with a new thought process around money you might not have considered before.

Christine Navarre, DVM, Extension Veterinarian, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center Having a solid herd health program is more than just a vaccination program. Join this session to discuss how nutrition, genetics, cattle handling, and other factors combine to impact herd health. Learn how a more complete herd health plan can set your cattle up for increased productivity and your operation up for increased profitability.

THE VALUE AND COST OF QUALITY

Mark McCully, Vice President, Certified Angus Beef LLC Many cow-calf producers and feeders have modified the management at their operation to market cattle with more marbling, and the beef industry has increased production of Choice and Prime grading beef at an incredible rate. Explore how the marketplace has responded, what current trends suggest about future demand, and what production factors cattlemen need to consider to maintain profitability in their pursuit of high quality beef.

BEEF BREEDERS TOOLBOX – SHOW ME THE MONEY!

Jared Decker, PhD, eBeef Team, Associate Professor & State Beef Extension Specialist, University of Missouri Information is great, but to have the full impact, it needs to affect your profitability. So many of us are dealing with information overload, but selection Indexes offer an alternative. Used properly, they enable multiple performance traits to be emphasized simultaneously with profitability as the ultimate driver. Come learn how selection indexes can simplify your decisions and improve your bottom line.

CONSERVATION PLANNING PARTNERSHIPS & PROGRAMS

Astor Boozer, Western Regional Conservationist and NCPP Co-Lead, NRCS; Jimmy Bramblett, Deputy Chief for Programs, NRCS The National Conservation Planning Partnership (NCPP) was formed in 2015 to reinvigorate conservation planning by implementing goals, offering new tools and expanding training to enhance the capacities of those providing conservation planning assistance to grazing-land owners and managers. This session will highlight emerging opportunities between conservation planning, grazing management plans, and conservation programs and will be especially relevant with the evolution of a new Farm Bill over the coming months. Real world examples of innovative on-the-ground practices will be shared.

Kent Bacus, Director, International Trade & Market Access, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association; Dan Halstrom, President & CEO, US Meat Export Federation Trade has been a hot topic in the media and in political discussions the past few years. This session features two leading authorities on beef trade who will go beyond the rhetoric to examine the current state of beef exports and the potential impact of U.S. trade policies on U.S. beef export markets. Which countries continue to import quality U.S. beef products and where can the industry look for future export expansion? Bring your questions for an interactive discussion on an often-misunderstood topic.

CHANGING TRADITIONAL PRACTICES TO PRESERVE TRADITIONAL VALUES

Dusty Abney, PhD, Cow/Calf Nutritionist, Cargill “What you’ve always done” might not always be in the best interest of your cattle. This session will explore the latest research, newest tools, and hottest topics in cow/calf nutrition while debunking the myths that could be holding your herd back from optimum performance. In the end, you’ll feel empowered and equipped to modernize your nutrition program while preserving the values that have helped your operation succeed thus far.

MANAGING FOR REPRODUCTIVE SUCCESS

Reinaldo Cooke, PhD, Associate Professor, Beef Cattle Production, Texas A&M University; Ky Pohler, PhD, Associate Professor, Beef Cattle Production, Texas A&M University A successful breeding program does not end when the last cow is AI’ed or even when the bull is removed. Pregnancy status needs to be determined! Knowing pregnancy status not only lets you know the success of the breeding season but allows you to properly manage pregnant cows to ensure optimal productivity of the offspring. In this session you will learn the current and future of pregnancy determination and how post breeding management can impact offspring performance. DEMONSTRATION ARENA Sponsored by

Panels provided by

This area will feature NCBA’s Stockmanship and Stewardship program, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health and the checkoff-funded Beef Quality Assurance program. These sessions will teach handling methods that improve gathering, penning, chute work and hauling on horseback and on foot. Much emphasis is placed on ways to increase cattle performance by reducing handling stress. Interactive discussions show how cattlemen can shape consumer’s perception of beef. Other topics include how the principles presented have a significant economic - as well as “quality of life” - benefit when applied in a cattle enterprise. Cattle handling experts Curt Pate, Ron Gill, and special guests will teach each of these informative sessions.

DEMONSTRATION ARENA SESSIONS:

MODERATORS

Todd McCartney

GATHERING THE HERD

Curt Pate & Dr. Ron Gill Proper handling strategies outside the corral determines how they’ll handle inside the corral. It’s true what they say – “How goes the gather, so goes the day!”

THE ROLE OF BASIC STOCKMANSHIP IN BQA

Curt Pate & Dr. Ron Gill Effective cattle handling lays the foundation for a quality BQA program. How we interact with our stock plays a bigger role in beef quality than most realize.

BUD BOX, TUB OR OLD V DESIGN – WHAT’S YOUR CORRAL SYSTEM?

Curt Pate & Dr. Ron Gill A closer look at different chute set-ups and how to adjust our approach to make the best of what we have. Reducing stress while loading the chute will increase success of what we do to cattle in it.

HORSEMANSHIP FOR STOCKMANSHIP

Curt Pate The better you handle your horse, the better you can handle your cattle!

BQA SPOTLIGHT: TRANSPORTATION

Dr. Ron Gill How they load is how they’ll travel. And how they haul determines how they will be received. Learn simple ways to avoid mistakes in loading that create problems down the road.
