The Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show provides education, information, fellowship and decision-making opportunities for the cattle industry’s leading members every year. The Convention is held either the last week of January or the first week of February in a city selected for its convenience to attendees and its capacity to adequately house and accommodate an anticipated 7,000 participants.

The first Convention was held in 1898 in Denver. Since then, the event has evolved into one of agriculture’s premier annual conventions, enthusiastically anticipated by cattle industry members and those who interact with them.

  The Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board (CBB) administers the national Beef Checkoff Program, subject to USDA approval and in coordination with the Federation of State Beef Councils and Qualified State Beef Councils nationwide. During the 2015 winter meeting, Beef Board members will review and evaluate the progress of current checkoff-funded promotion, education, research and information programs aimed at maintaining strong consumer acceptance of, and preference for beef and beef products. Checkoff committees also will begin setting goals for checkoff programs in FY 2016, which begins October 1, 2015. Beef Board members will elect 2015 officers, including chairman, vice chairman and secretary/treasurer, as well as members of the Beef Board Executive Committee and the Beef Promotion Operating Committee for the coming year. The Beef Board welcomes all producers and importers who pay the checkoff to attend CBB and joint checkoff committee meetings at no cost, to observe and participate in the decision-making process for their beef checkoff.

This area will feature NCBA’s Beef Quality Assurance program Stockmanship & Stewardship. These sessions will teach handling methods that improve gathering, penning, chute work and hauling on horseback. Much emphasis is placed on ways to increase cattle performance by reducing handling stress. Interactive discussions show how cattlemen can actually shape consumers perception of beef. Other topics include how the principles presented have a significant economic — as well as "quality of life" — benefit when applied in a cattle enterprise. NCBA is promoting youth in agriculture and the National FFA Organization (FFA) with the second annual FFA Day at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Trade Show on Friday, February 6, during the Cattle Industry Convention.







For more than 20 years, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Associations (NCBA) Political Action Committee (PAC) has been the political arm of the largest national trade association representing U.S. cattlemen and women. NCBA-PAC raises funds from personal voluntary contributions from NCBA members and pools those contributions together to support political candidates who support the U.S. beef cattle industry. The PAC gives cattle producers the access and visibility the industry needs to have its voice heard on Capitol Hill.

 

Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University This course will describe the multiple reasons the nation’s cowherd has dropped to levels not seen in 60 years. It will provide a comparison of the profitability of calves vs. crops, changes in the use of pasture land, comparison of demand and consumption, how government programs influence herd rebuilding, where cowherd expansion will be located, and who will be retaining heifers to rebuild the cowherd.

Outlook for the Newer Reproductive Strategies

George Seidel, Colorado State University If you have an interest in improving the reproductive efficiency of your cowherd, this is a class for you. One of the nations most respected beef cattle reproductive physiologists will discuss cloning, transgenics, in vitro fertilization, genotyping embryos and checking cattle for euploidy, and sexing sperm.

Genetics to Fit Differing Environments

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced last month that eligible farmers and ranchers can sign up for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) disaster assistance programs restored by passage of the 2014 Farm Bill. “We implemented these programs in record time and kept our commitment to begin signup today,” said Agriculture Secretary Vilsack. “To ensure enrollment goes as smoothly as possible, dedicated staff in over 2,000 Farm Service Agency offices across the country are doing everything necessary to help producers that have suffered through two and IN THIS ISSUE Leadership Comments Management

a half difficult years with no assistance because these programs were awaiting Congressional action.” Depending on the size and type of farm or ranch operation, eligible producers can enroll in one of four programs administered by the Farm Service Agency. The Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) and the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) will provide payments to eligible producers for livestock deaths and grazing losses that have occurred since the expiration of the livestock disaster assistance programs in 2011, and including calendar years 2012, 2013, and 2014. The

Emergency Assistance for Livestock Program (ELAP) provides emergency assistance to eligible producers of livestock that have suffered losses because of disease, severe weather, blizzards and wildfires. Enrollment also opened for the Tree Assistance Program (TAP), which provides financial assistance to qualifying orchardists and nursery tree growers to replant or rehabilitate trees, bushes and vines damaged by natural disasters. Now in its seventh year, the National BQA Award recognizes outstanding cattle producers, from across the country who incorporate BQA principles as part of their dayto-day activities. The awards are sponsored by Cargill, Boehringer Ingelheim and funded in part by the Beef Checkoff Program. A common trait among previous winners has been a strong desire to continually improve BQA on their operations while successfully encouraging others around them to implement BQA on their operations. The National BQA award winners are selected annually by a committee of representatives from universities, state beef councils and affiliated groups. For guidance, judges will consider adherence to “on-site” BQA principles, leadership activities and the sustainability of the business as a whole. Beef Quality Assurance Award: recognizes outstanding cattle producers from across the country who incorporate this BQA principles as part of the day-to-day activities on their operations. Refunds will be issued only for registrations cancelled on/before January 9, 2015. A $50.00 service charge will be assessed on all cancelled registrations. Substitutions for registrations are allowed. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after this date or for failure to attend. NO refunds will be issued on-site. Under special circumstances, and only when requested in writing, a credit (excluding the service charge, ticketed and/or meal events), may be issued to be applied toward pre-registration for the 2016 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show.  Room Blocks

Blocks of ten or more rooms (on peak night of Wednesday and/or Thursday) may be reserved initially under one company name. A complete and final list of names must be submitted to the NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau on or before November 14, 2014, or the room block will be released (no reminders will be sent). Any company/organization reserving a block of ten or more rooms will also be required to sign an attrition agreement with NCBA. This agreement makes the company financially responsible to NCBA in case of cancellation of these rooms after the January 9, 2015 cut-off date.

Hospitality Suites

All requests for hospitality suites must be approved in advance by NCBA. Please call the NCBA Convention & Meetings Team (Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm (Mountain Time) at (303) 694-0305 for suite types and rates.

Housing Assistance

If you have questions, please call the NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau at (800) 974-3084, 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Special Requests

If ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) special assistance is required, please indicate this on the hotel reservation form or directly notify the hotel holding your reservation. If you have other special requests (i.e. floor location, or close to elevators) please use the “Special Needs or Other Requests” area on the reservation form, or include a note to the housing bureau, stating your needs. Special requests cannot be guaranteed; however, hotels will do their best to honor all requests. Hotels will assign specific room types upon check-in, based on availability.

Confirmations

The NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau will send an acknowledgement of your reservation by email. Please check it for accuracy. If you do not receive an acknowledgement within 14 days, please contact the NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau immediately at (800) 974-3084.

Changes

If you made your original hotel reservation using the online housing system, you may revisit the online system to make any necessary changes or contact the NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau by mail at the address below, by phone at (800) 974-3084, or by fax at (301) 694-5124 to change your reservation until January 14, 2015 at 5:00pm, Mountain Time. Cancellations

Your cancellation frees up a room for another attendee, so please cancel your reservation early if you will not be using it! There is no penalty for cancellations received by the NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau on, or prior to, January 9, 2015. All cancellations received by the NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau after January 9, 2015 will be assessed a one night room and tax charge as a cancellation penalty regardless of when the reservation was received. Cancellation notifications must be received by the NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau on/before January 9, 2015. The NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau will continue to process all cancellations up to January 14 at 5:00pm Mountain Time. In addition, the hotel will charge an early departure fee for guests departing earlier than their stated departure date. To avoid this fee, be sure you give your correct departure date when you check-in at your confirmed hotel.

After the Cut-Off Date

The NCBA/San Antonio Housing Bureau will continue to accept hotel reservations through January 14, 2015 at 5:00pm Mountain Time based upon availability. After January 14, NCBA encourages you to call the official Convention hotels directly, as the hotels will honor our discounted rates and may have rooms available. To receive the list of hotels and telephone numbers, contact NCBA at (303) 694-0305 Monday through Friday between 8:00am – 5:00pm Mountain Time, or check our website at www.BeefUSA.org.

Housing Problems

Please call the NCBA Convention & Meetings staff at (303) 694-0305 if you have any problems with the housing process. If you encounter any problems once you arrive in San Antonio, see the Convention staff in the Cattle Industry Headquarters Office at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in room 006AB. We will be happy to assist in the resolution of your problem with one of our official convention hotels.

Special Notes:

• All room rates are plus applicable room taxes, currently 16.75% (subject to change). • Convention room rates are in effect for attendees arriving up to 3 days prior (February 1) and remaining up to 3 days after (February 10). • Rooms will be available at the hotel’s check-in time.
