HERD HEALTH What is the real health status of your herd ?

If you are experiencing less than optimum fertility or milk solids production, get your bulk milk analysed now.

■ You will receive your results automatically by post and can either make a

phone call or arrange an appointment to get the results interpreted. Join today to get a result to help you with 2014 breeding season. Call Patrick Kelly 022 43228. Energy balance report › Know the performance after each milk recording › Are 1st & 4th calvers getting enough feed? › Identify if there are problems coming from the dry cow diet

JOHNES ■ Each herdowner in 2014 should individually test all their cows for Johnes

WHY TEST? › Protect young replacement heifers › There is no treatment or vaccination for Johnes › Spreads by faeces, colostrum or milk from infected cows being fed to your future replacement heifers

› Unknown infected cows are culled out of the herd for being empty or poor production-especially in spring calving herds Firstly you need to be milk recording to allow individual cow samples to be taken. The cost is €5.00 per cow including vat, for two samples tested.

MILK recording › SCC- achieve the milk bonus and avoid profit lost through milk loss and penalties › Identify the most Profitable cows and the best cows to breed replacements from › Increase production from the same number of cows › Select highest protein and fat kg producing cows › Get the energy balance of cows › Insurance-TB breakdown › Bulls for AI › Johne’s Testing

In all Johnes testing you need to avoid testing for Johnes for the three months following a TB test.

2014 BREEDING SEASON cows In a 80 cow herd

1st 3 weeks

3-4 cows on heat/day

50 mounts each

2nd 3 weeks

1-2 cows on heat/day

25 mounts each

3rd 3 weeks

1 cow on heat/day

15 mounts

Plan 1st 3 weeks of breeding season 21st to 28th April you need to have bred 30% of your cows end of week 1 . › 80 cow herd 3-4 cows a day on heat- 24 cows bred end of week 1 If you have not achieved this either the cows are not cycling or you are not detecting them. › Act immediately as early intervention is the key. Tail paint twice a week in normal weather Monday and Thursday. In wetter weather in crease the frequency. 28th April- 5th May you need to have bred 60% of your cows by end week 2 › 80 cow herd 3-4 cows a day on heat- 48 bred end of week 2 Act immediately if not achieving these targets as early intervention is the key. 5th May-12th May you need to have bred 90% of your cows by end week 3

Plan for the end of 1st 3 weeks › 12th of May end of 1st 3 weeks-Crucial date in the breeding calendar › Make appointment with your vet, for any cows now calved 35 days & not seen in heat and get them cycling › Calculate your submission rate, number of cows bred/number of cows calved 35 days Plan 2nd 3 weeks of Breeding Season

Entering the 2nd 3 weeks of the breeding season

Activity is halved-need to increase the intensity of the heat detection now

› 8 0 cow herd 3-4 a day on heat- 72 bred end of week 3 Act immediately if not achieving these targets as early intervention is the key. Increase intensity by having a vasectomised bull available to let with the cows, a male will increase the level of activity and will identify heats. Tail paint a minimum of twice a week and do a check last thing at night especially in herds less than 100 cows as activity is reduced

End of 6 weeks 2nd June end of 2nd 3 weeks-Crucial date in the breeding calendar, › Make appointment with your vet › Select out all cows now calved 35 days not seen in heat and get them cycling › Calculate your submission rate, number of cows bred/number of cows calved 35 days

4

End of 9 weeks 23rd June end of 3rd 3 weeks-Crucial date in the breeding calendar, › Make the final appointment with your vet to get all cows not calved over 35 days checked › Select out all cows now calved 35 days not seen in heat and get them cycling › Even if you are letting the bull off now, work on these non-cyclers first

issue 3 MAY 2014

2014 BREEDING SEASON MAIDEN HEIFERS Decide date of start of breeding season – let’s take 21st April Heifers under target need to receive increased feed to increase daily gain 21st April Breeding season begins. 21st April Week 1 › Apply scratch cards to all heifers and if you have a vasectomised bull he works superbly in conjunction with the scratch cards. › It also gets a young vasectomised bull familiar with mating › Get the heifers into the yard each day for heat detection and drafting for AI. Feeding them 1Kg of concentrate each day in yard is a great encouragement to get them in easily. › Each day check for scratch cards gone red and AI. › In week 1 you should have 1/3 of them bred-if you are not achieving this heifers are either not cycling or are not being picked up in heat. Action immediately 28th April at the end of week 1 if you have achieved close to 1/3 bred you should inject with PG (either 2ml Estrumate or 5ml Lutalyse) the 2/3 not bred. › The majority will be on heat 48-72 hours later- ensure you are available them. › If you inject on Mon 28th the majority will be on heat Wed 30th and Thur 1st May. If you will not be available on Wed 30th or Thur 1st May delay the injection. At this stage we now have all the heifers bred and now we either watch for the repeats or leave off a bull. › End of 1st 3 weeks-Continue with AI or let off stock bull › Continue with AI › Watching the repeats is crucial to achieving compact calving › Either have a vasectomised bull fitted with a chinball or keep renewing the scratch cards. › Watch carefully for repeats, especially the few days where the repeats from the injection of PG will be falling. › If you have a bull with the heifers at this stage - if the number of repeats is more than 2 a day, AI for this 3 to 4 day period

Heat Detection

In applying scratch cards and tail paint the following is helpful

1

3

5

2

4

6

5 Wait until the glue gets tacky it may take a few minutes in colder weather, then apply the scratch card Immediate application of the scratch card prior to the glue getting tacky results in the cards not staying on. 6 When reapplying the cards after insemination wait for 24 hours and if the card is well adhered place the new card on top of it- as otherwise you will just remove the hair with the used card.

Apply scratch cards on a dry day 1 Do not clip the rump hair; however clip the tail ends where there is dry hardened dung 2 Brush any loose hair or dust from the rump

tail paint

3/4 If 5 heifers in crush, spray 5 scratch cards with scotch weld 77 and spray the 5 heifers

AVAILABLE FROM YOUR LOCAL TECHNICIAN

› Clip the rumps prior to tail painting, this will reduce the level of caking of the paint that occurs after 4-5 weeks. › Tail paint twice a week for the first three weeks and more often in wet weather, close observation at milking times is sufficient. › In the second and third 3 week period close observation at milking times is not sufficient, either run a vasectomised bull with the cows or else last thing every evening walk down and check the cows for activity.

avoid the lull in calving get a vasectomised bull

If you have not got a vasectomised bull this year organise one for next year ■ As the chinball in made of leather it stretches, therefore it is important to fit it properly and adjust it as it stretches. In young bulls it may cut into the back of the head, especially behing the ears, therefore padding at this point is important.

■ Top up with custom chin ball paint only - red and blue excellent in wet weather.

■ Mating Marks of Chinball

› MIN 8 weeks before use (post operation) › 1 week with no paint in chin ball › Put with heifers for 3-4 weeks to learn mating routine › When activity is reduced in cows let in vasectomised bull to pick up cows. › He will save you having to heat detect the cows in the evening

■ This bull is a 2 year bull - he will mate more cows and have a reduced chance of getting hurt. Can leave him with cows after 3 weeks breeding. ■ When the level of activity is reduced in cows and it is getting more difficult to detect them - he is invauable.

Get the ratio correct calving or else get them fetility tested by your vet. stock bull

■ Ensure the bull is fertile, check last years compactness of

= young BULL

= 15 x females

MATURE BULL

20-25 x females

The number of empty females can be reduced down for the bull by continuing the ai season for longer or alternatively leave the bull with cows and continue to AI as well until the number in heat has reduced to 3 a week.
