Preparations for Upcoming Delegations Center for International Understanding staff have been working with North Carolinians who will travel to China soon. In November, the Center will lead two separate delegations to China, each of which will be involved with Confucius Classrooms. The first is a group of approximately 40 North Carolina educators who are affiliated with Confucius Classrooms. They will travel with Hanban’s Chinese Bridge Delegation, November 3‐11. As we have done in past years, we will help to coordinate this group as they are hosted in Beijing, and will then facilitate meetings with partner schools in Jiangsu Province. The Center is conducting three orientation meetings around the state to let delegates know what to expect and share information about Chinese culture, history, and education systems. To view an ebook associated with this group, please click here. The second group that will travel to China November 7‐19 are legislative and business leaders who are enthusiastic about learning about Chinese education, history, and economic systems. The Center’s Executive Director, Cindy DeFoor, will lead this delegation. A highlight of the program will be a meeting between North Carolina delegates and representatives of Hanban. In a preparatory meeting in North Carolina October 6‐7, these North Carolina delegates will have the opportunity to hear from Matt Friedrick about Confucius Classrooms and to talk with Hanban Guest Teacher Dr. Liu Xiuming (Buncombe County Schools).

Guest Teacher Site Visits Center for International Understanding staff has been visiting Confucius Classrooms around the state to check on progress and to meet with Guest Teachers and principals. In September, Center staff visited Guest Teachers in Guilford, Cabarrus, Rowan, Randolph, and Gaston Counties. The Center will have visited all Guest Teachers within the coming month.

During these site visits, staff has discussed successes and challenges of individual teachers’ classrooms. In all cases, principals are very happy with the Guest Teachers assigned to their schools. Center staff has worked with Guest Teachers on ensuring strong housing and transportation situations, assigning individual classrooms to Guest Teachers, and suggesting classroom management techniques. The Center looks forward to initiating this year’s professional development program for Guest Teachers and to proceeding with the state’s international teacher licensure process for Guest Teachers.
