MoneyMatters Creating the Wedding Budget
Couples engaged to be married have a lot on their plates as they begin planning their weddings. Next to buying a home and having a child, weddings are one of the largest expenses a couple will incur. While tradition once called parents of the bride to for a couple’s wedding, nowadays more and more engaged couples are at least partially financing their own nuptials. That means prospective brides and grooms must develop wedding budgets that won’t ensure their first act as Mr. and Mrs. is paying down debt. In its 2015 Real Weddings Study, online bridal resource The Knot found that many couples still receive substantial financial support from their parents to pay for their weddings. The survey found that, on average, the bride’s parents contributed 44 percent of the overall wedding budget in 2015, while couples financed 43 percent (the remaining 13 percent was financed by the groom’s parents and additional sources). Some budget work is necessary before wedding planning begins for couples to make sure they keep their finances in check. Examine your collective finances. Few couples know the details of each other’s finances before getting engaged. While some may still hesitate to share their personal financial information upon getting engaged, an open and honest discussion and examination of each person’s finances is the only way to develop a realistic wedding budget that both partners can live with. Once couples know what they can contribute, they can then consult their parents to determine if their mothers and fathers are intending to contribute. Develop a preliminary guest list. A preliminary guest list can give couples an idea of how large and expensive their weddings will be. According to the Real Weddings Study, the average cost per wedding guest in 2015 was $237. While that cost can vary greatly depending on geography and other factors, couples should keep that figure in mind when drafting their guest lists. If need be, keep costs down by trimming the guest list so it includes only close family members and friends. Don’t count on gifts. Many couples justify runaway wedding

budgets by telling themselves that they will ultimately get the money back via wedding gifts. While many guests will give financial gifts, counting on such windfalls is a recipe for accruing debt. Do not build potential wedding gifts into your wedding budget. If you do so and your expectations fall short, you could be facing considerable debt upon returning home from your honeymoon. Gather quotes before choosing vendors and venues. Where couples get married and what vendors they choose will have a great impact on how much money they will spend on their weddings. For example, the Real Weddings Study found that in 2015 the average wedding in Manhattan cost couples slightly more than $82,000, while the average Alaskan wedding cost just over $17,000. Venues within the same city can vary greatly with regard to pricing and offerings as well, so couples should give themselves ample time to gather quotes and find an affordable venue they like. Build extra costs into your budget. When determining a budget you can live with, remember to include a little extra for unforeseen costs. Weddings are large undertakings, and it’s reasonable to expect some unforeseen costs to arise. Building such costs into your initial budget will make these unforeseen circumstances that much easier to handle. Trimming the Costs These figures don’t mean a fabulous wedding is out of reach for those on a tight budget. What it does mean is that some difficult decisions may have to be made. What is most important to you on your big day? And where can corners be cut to trim much-needed dollars off the final bill. Is a formal rehearsal dinner a must? Or can your bridesmaids pitch in and pull together a great home-cooked spaghetti dinner that everyone will appreciate? If having your dream wedding includes a high dollar venue, money can be saved in other areas to bring your dream to life. Be ever watchful of the small figures. Large expenditures, like paying a flat $2,000 for a location, are easy to track. It’s often in the
smaller costs that couples lose track of. Sure, linen tablecloths may only be $3 a piece to rent for the day, but if you’re renting 100 for two days, the cost can rise quickly without anyone realizing where the money is going. Here are some additional suggestions for trimming the costs along the way: Limit the guest list. Inviting all friends and family members might be a nice gesture, but it’s also an expensive one. Costconscious couples can save a good deal of money by only inviting those friends and family members who are closest to them. Sit down as a couple and write out a list of people that you would both like to invite. Ask your parents to do the same – it’s only fair since parents generally have a financial stake in the wedding as well. Take into consideration who will bring a date or children with them or consider limiting the ‘plus one’ to those are married. Look at available assets. Does your aunt have a great waterfront home? Perhaps your friend’s brother drives a limo on the weekends or has a garden of lovely lilies. Or maybe your friend makes a mean lasagna. Look at what is available to you at no or limited cost and don’t be embarrassed about asking. Odds are among your friends and family members there are a variety of ways that you can chip away at the overall budget. When reaching out, be sure that you’re not sacrificing something is important to you, such as photography. Instead, find help in those areas that are low on your priority list. Switch days. Saturday weddings are not only the most popular, but also the most expensive, according to a Visa report. Couples with some flexibility can save money by moving their wedding to a Friday or Sunday. Couples in a tourist-driven economy like Eastern North Carolina can also stand to shave a little bit off the top by having their wedding during off-peak months. November through April are slower months for weddings, so many halls, caterers and other service have lower rates. Limit rehearsal dinner attendance. Tradition dictates that this special night before event is attended by the parents and the wedding party, however, through the years it has expanded to include close friends and all family members. Keep it small or consider going Dutch at a local restaurant. Trim back the floral arrangements. Flowers for a wedding can prove very expensive, but couples can trim those costs by using more greenery in the floral displays and ordering less expensive, seasonal flowers. When discussing arrangements with the florist, explain your budget limitations clearly to make sure they are understood. Couples may also look at candles, shells and other decorative items that are abundant in the area to help fill the space left by absent centerpieces. For those who are really creative – loose flowers in a tall slender vase can go a long way. Eat, drink and be merry, but let them do it on someone else’s dime. In the Visa survey, respondents felt they overspent more on food, drink and cake than any other aspect of their wedding. Save serious money by planning the reception for a time when guests will not need a full, seated meal. If your ceremony is between 1-3 in the afternoon, you can safely serve finger sandwiches and passed hors’d oeuvres. For a reception starting at 4 or 5pm, have a cocktail reception. Make it clear on your invitation. Limiting the bar to beer and wine as opposed to mixed drinks can also provide a savings. Couples may also choose to limit beverage availability by having one or two drinks for those looking to have a much smaller bar tab at the end of the night. If you are having a wedding at a private location, the couple can provide their own alcohol, which can provide a great savings after a big night. Location, location, location plays a huge role in how much your wedding is going to cost. If you know anyone with a beautiful home or a large garden, consider the option of having your event there. Private venues may require hiring staff, paying for insurance and a variety of other incendiary costs that leave you wondering if maybe you should have just hit up the justice of the peace in his chambers. During those off-season weddings, don’t be ashamed to bargain a little bit. Venues that are booked every weekend all summer long are often sitting vacant come November – making it a
According to The Knot 2015 Real Weddings Study, the average wedding cost in the US, excluding honeymoon costs, was $32,641 in 2015, an increase of more than $1,400 from the year prior. The study found that couples looking to tie the knot in New York City’s Manhattan borough can expect to pay well above the national average. Manhattan weddings cost couples an average of $82,299 in 2015. That’s over $20,000 more than in Chicago, the next most expensive city to tie the knot. Couples who want a more affordable place to get married than the Big Apple may want to look into saying ‘I do’ in central Illinois, where the average wedding cost was $21,818, more than $10,000 below the national average. great opportunity to get a little discount. Forgo a traditional honeymoon. Seventeen percent of male respondents to the Visa survey felt they overspent on their honeymoon. While it’s certainly nice to fly off to the Caribbean and spend your first week as a married couple soaking up some sun, a more local getaway for a couple of days can be just as relaxing and save substantial amounts of money. Better yet, create an account at a website like Honeyfund, which allows friends and family members to help pay for part of the excursion. Wedding costs can be eye-opening for couples preparing to walk down the aisle. Fortunately, there are many ways to cut costs without cutting quality.

Building a Registry Registries are a wedding tradition, not unlike a couple’s first dance or the best man/maid of honor toast. But as practical as wedding registries are, many couples approach their registries with a degree of hesitation, fearful that they might appear presumptuous or simply uncertain about what to include on their lists. The following tips can help engaged couples build a registry to relish and utilize for years to come. Establish an online registry. Whereas guests once had to visit a couple’s favorite retailer(s) and ask what remained on their registry, online registries now allow well-meaning family members and friends to peruse potential gifts from the comforts of home and ship gifts directly to the couple. Online registries even indicate which items have already been purchased, saving couples the trouble of returning duplicates while reassuring buyers that their gifts are fulfilling a need or want. Share your registry information. Include it on your wedding website if you make one as well as on your wedding invitations. Guests need to know where you are registered, so share that information on your wedding website and include it on your save-the-date cards and invitations. Register with multiple retailers. By registering with more than one retailer, couples can give their guests more options to choose from. Try to include one brick-and-mortar store, ideally one with a national presence, so guests who prefer to shop inperson won’t be forced to buy online. Don’t be afraid to list expensive items. While few guests will break the bank to buy wedding gifts, that does not mean couples should avoid including expensive items on their registries. Some couples might feel it’s inappropriate, but it can actually prove practical. Many stores offer couples steep discounts on items they listed on their registries that ultimately were not purchased. If you have your eye on an especially expensive item, include it on your list without worrying about how it may look to your guests, as they will understand when you explain the post-wedding discount you’re eligible for. Don’t limit your registry to expensive items. While it’s perfectly acceptable to include expensive items on your registry, remember that variety is the spice of life when adding items to your registry. Include items at a range of price points for guests working with various budgets. Don’t hesitate to include lowcost items, as some guests may enjoy building a wedding gift basket with various affordable items from your registry. Remember that no gift is too obscure. Thanks to the internet, just about any item can now be tracked down by ambitious gift givers. If you want to include items that might not be available at run-of-the-mill retailers, choose an online retailer such as Amazon to host one of your registries. Such sites are great places to find specialty items or more obscure offerings that might be out of stock at more traditional retailers. Encourage donations. If you are truly hesitant to ask for gifts or you’re tying the knot later in life and already have everything you need, encourage guests to donate to a favorite charity in lieu of making a donation. Sites like honeyfund.com help guests contribute to the honeymoon, and there are a variety of other sites available. A wedding registry provides a practical way for well-meaning wedding guests to show their love for brides- and grooms-tobe.

On Location Choosing a Venue for the Big Day
Cynthia Rose Photography With an abundance of historical locales and natural beauty, the Crystal Coast is chock full of options when it comes to choosing a wedding location for those who opt to say their vows in a more nontraditional spot. From the wilds of the Outer Banks to the historic setting of the Beaufort Historic Site, the variety of outdoor venues in Carteret County can provide for just about every taste. If you choose an outdoor venue, professionals suggest having a back-up plan with a secondary inside location just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. Some of the area’s venues already have contingency plans in place, with room to move the festivities indoors in a pinch, while others do not. It’s certainly a good idea to check and see what is available at each location and browse for the ideal space. The size of the location needs to be reasonable for the number of guests you are expecting. Typically about half to two-thirds of the invited guests will attend, so the location should be large enough to accommodate this number of people, but small enough so that the atmosphere remains intimate. While planning, families will want to ask what ABC licenses a site has in place and which may need to be obtained for the event at an additional cost. There are many places, however, that take care of the all the planning for you. Many resorts, attractions and rental agencies have event planners on staff that can walk you through the process both before and on the day of the wedding. Whether you plan on getting married in the middle of tourist season, or during the quieter off-season months, most of the area’s favorite attractions are open and ready to greet your family. Here are some of our favorites:

How it All Began The wedding cake dates back the Roman Empire, when guests would throw large rolls made of barley and wheat at the happy couple. The rolls, which represented fertility and prosperity, slowly evolved into a single cake. They didn’t necessarily eat the cake, though. Historically, the groom would take a bite before breaking the rest of the cake over the head of his beloved. This apparently symbolized the man breaking the woman’s purity, as well as his dominance over her. Things progressed. Thank goodness. Roman bakers would prepare a massive batch of small, sweet cakes, similar to today’s cupcakes, which they would stack in a pyramid shape. Good luck and great fertility would fall upon the couple who were able to kiss over this pyramid without knocking any to the floor. During the reign of Charles II of England, frosting was spread over the cake pyramid. As the couple kissed over the creation, they would often end up with a face full of frosting.
Sweet Tooth
Whether it’s a four-tiered skyscraper or 200 cupcakes, odds are your guests will be looking forward to a bit of cake before your special day is over. But what kind of cake? How tall should it be? And what flavor should the filling and icing be? These are all important questions, but the most important question of all is … what kind of cake do you want. Today’s wedding cakes are as varied as the people ordering them, and trends continue to evolve. While the three-layer stacked cake is still the most popular, gone are the pillars and separated layers, as well as the loops, drapes and figurine toppers that adorned cakes 20 years ago. Unlike cakes of yore, brides want their deserts to be dazzling and delicious. No longer is white cake and round tiers the steadfast rule. Now you can expect chocolate, strawberry and butter pecan in all shapes and sizes. One of the easiest places to set your cake apart from the rest is in the frosting. White frosting is still incorporated in many a wedding cake, however, more brides are letting their fancy run wild. For beach themed weddings along the coast, cakes often incorporate blues of the ocean and sky, or sand colored shells. Like anything, the more detailed and work-oriented your cake becomes, the more it’s going to cost. Prices are usually based on a per slice basis and can range from $1 to $10 or more per serving depending on where you go to purchase it. Local grocery stores, bakeries and private cake makers all have a variety of offerings and varying prices. In general, it’s safe to say that a simple three-tiered cake
22
Bride and Groom 2017-2018
for 100 people can cost between $200 to $400. Those looking for something comparable to the works of art found on TLC’s Cake Boss should set aside a considerable chunk of the wedding budget – extras don’t come cheap. Keep in mind that the cake topping isn’t included in the cost and can add another $100, as can other additions like ribbons, seashells or real flowers. As with any vendor, it’s a good idea to check for your baker’s references before committing. They should all have pictures they can share as well, giving you a solid idea of what you can expect. In addition, a taste test is generally offered to help you make a decision on flavors. Bridal fairs, where local bakers will have samples on hand, are a great opportunity to taste a variety of wares in one place. If your wedding is during the peak season along the coast, between May and October, make sure you place your cake order at least six months in advance of the big day. That way you can make sure you get to have your dream cake, and eat it, too.
Personalize It
Gone are the days of topping your cake with a tiny plastic bride and groom. Instead, why not try a sterling silver or less expensive acrylic topper with names of the bride and groom, or maybe a tiny picture frame of the happy couple. Of course, you can personalize a tiny bride and groom, too, matching them to your clothing, hairstyle and more.

Venue Spotlight:
The Watson House Casey Futrell Photography

Bride and Groom 2017-2018
Carolina Home and Garden on Highway 24 has been a go-to for gardeners for more than 20 years, but few realize that the site may also be the perfect place to go when searching for your perfect wedding venue. No, the garden center isn’t for hire – but the owners’ private home is. When the market took a turn several years ago, Stephanie Watson, who owns the business with her husband Brian, brainstormed ways of keeping herself busy. The one unused asset she had at her fingertips was their beautiful soundfront home in Emerald Isle. “The kids were growing up, the economy had slowed a bit and I was really interested in doing something different. It just made sense – it was very natural,” she said recently. With such a beautiful setting and a large amount of available space, the homesite is ideal for weddings. The seven acre property is loaded with charm. Manicured and landscaped throughout, the site includes a covered patio and outdoor fireplace, a terrace, an indoor lounge area with built in bar, a groom’s lounge and three accessible restrooms, one of which is handicapped accessible. It was perfect for sharing – so that’s exactly what she did, she began opening her doors to wedding parties. Sure, there are many waterfront venues to choose for your big day. What sets the Watson House apart is Stephanie’s sense of style and her impeccable eye for details. And really, when it comes to your wedding day, it’s all about the details. From antique chandeliers and dressers to table settings and lanterns, each piece is placed with a level of care and attention that other venues strive to match. The garden center has a wide variety of décor, Stephanie said, and her and Brian have always enjoyed antiquing – finding unique items for both their home and the business. There are even pews that can be placed on the lawn overlooking the water, creating an
ideal outside wedding venue. “From local antique shops to market – I go to market in Atlanta and High Point – we find a lot of candelabra, candlesticks, furniture, lots of small things that come together to create this really romantic scene.” Through the years, the couple has had so much fun gathering items that they are now offering a rental warehouse for wedding planners and other sites. Then, of course, there are the floral arrangements and greenery. With the flexibility that comes from the immense resources at their fingertips, no area is left uncovered. Romance, as they say, is in full bloom, from the shaded expanse of lawn to the table centerpieces. The Watson House is an exclusive venue – the couple only rents the site 14 times a year, seven in the fall and seven in the spring. But it’s also an inclusive venue. Brides and grooms can dress on site, hair and makeup can be arranged on site and Stephanie and her Dream Makers team prepare brunch for the bridal party and are on hand through the entire event. Then there is the waterfront, the dock, the beautiful sunset – it’s hard to imagine a more beautiful setting for a wedding. Stephanie has enjoyed the work so much that the couple went on to buy a second location – Palo Alto Plantation in Maysville, the oldest plantation house in Onslow County. They bought the site and renovated it as an additional wedding venue. “It’s really added so much to my life,” said Stephanie. “Seeing the families so happy and the connection we make with the people along the way, it’s such an honor to be a part of their day. We really love what we do. We are so blessed.” To learn more about The Watson House, visit dreamweddingestates. com or call 252-422-1841.

Engagement photos vary depending on the couple. Traditionally used for newspaper announcements and now frequently included on save-the-date cards and wedding websites, engagement photos can range from formal shoots in which couples are dressed to the nines to more laid back shots featuring couples in more everyday attire. When planning an engagement shoot, couples should give themselves carte blanche in regard to style, as the photo shoot need not follow many of the more accepted rules that the wedding itself will ultimately adhere to. Once couples have settled on a style for their photos, there are additional ways to ensure the session is a success. Find a photographer who shares your sensibilities. Photographers can vary greatly in style, and an engagement photo shoot will be most successful when couples find a photographer whose style matches the theme they are looking for with their photos. You likely would not hire a nature photographer to photograph a basketball game, so don’t hire someone who specializes in posed studio-style shots if you want your photos to be more lively and spontaneous. Before you hire anyone, ask for samples of each photographer’s work to be certain you’re getting someone who has experience shooting the type of photos you want to take. Once you’ve found the ideal photographer for you – trust them. This isn’t their first rodeo. So while a position or location might sound awkward to you, odds are the photographer can visualize exactly the result they will net from the process. Have faith in their experience and feel confident that their goal is to present you in the best way possible. Not sure exactly what you’re looking for? Browse the web to find samples of engagement photos that you love and share those with your photographer before the shoot. Seasoned photographers appreciate hearing from their clients and like being able to make the session everything the happy couple is anticipating. Solicit ideas from the photographer. Some couples already know exactly where they want their engagement photos to be shot and which poses they want to be arranged, however, many couples have little or no experience with professional photo shoots. No worries,
your photographer will have a great idea of spots that are perfect for the look and style you’re going for. Be wary of photographers who offer little input, as you may ultimately be dissatisfied with their work once the shoot has come and gone. Get outside. Many couples prefer their engagement photos be taken somewhere they have a personal connection to, such as the sight of their first date or a park they frequently visit. Studio photos might provide the best lighting, but couples have no connection to such spaces, and down the road they may regret not taking the photos in someplace that’s a little more meaningful. In addition, a shoot outside the studio affords couples and their photographer more opportunities to experiment and improvise, which can produce a wider array of shots. Don’t forget candid shots. Candid shots make the shoot more fun and help couples relax a little bit. Many engagement photos will never be seen by anyone other than the photographer and the couple he or she is shooting, so don’t be bashful during candid shots for fear of being embarrassed down the road. Have fun, and your other photos are likely to come out better as a result. Most photographers are fine with the couple changing during the shoot. Perhaps you’ll want to take some more formal shots then change clothes for more relaxed, candid ones. Have fun. Incorporate your hobbies or other loves. Maybe your fiancé loves to surf, or perhaps you have a family pet that is just as much a part of the family as his human counterparts – tastefully bring that into the fun and make the most of your engagement session. Remember this is a great time to get to know your photographer – consider it a dry run for the wedding day. As stressful as the big day can be, it is important that you feel comfortable and at ease with your photographer lurking in the wings through it all. Take time during your engagement shoot to get to know them a little bit better and build a rapport that will make the big day even more relaxing. Keep in mind, this is a person who has been through hundreds of weddings – they are full of great ideas and be a great ally on your special day. www.nccoast.com

WATERFRONT NUPTIALS Planning an Outside Wedding
Casey Futrell Photography Outdoor weddings are incredibly romantic and a growing number of couples are exchanging vows amid an expansive garden or with the splendor of the pounding surf providing a picturesque backdrop. Imagine the breeze catching the bride’s hair, barefoot bridesmaids and a beautiful sunset for those important photos. With breathtaking landscape from just about every vantage point, the Crystal Coast is a wedding venue just waiting to happen. Keep in mind, however, that there is much more involved in an outdoor wedding than a traditional church setting. Tables, chairs, decorative awnings, lighting, sound – just about everything has to be carried to the location. And everything comes with a price tag attached making it easy for costs to rise. The weather is arguably the most important consideration. Flexibility is a must, as is a back-up plan. Whether it be transitioning indoors to the reception area or ordering a tent just in case, be prepared for inclement weather situations. Aside from the threat of rain, the temperature outside should be taken into consideration. For a summer wedding, make programs in the shape of fans or provide umbrellas for older guests while they sit in the sun. Have bottled water on hand and have an area in the shade where guests can wait before the ceremony begins. If seated too early, guests can get hot and uncomfortable. For the colder months, rent portable heaters to keep guests warm. Stock up on blankets and wraps to hand out and ask the caterer about setting up a hot chocolate and coffee stand before the ceremony. Accessibility is vital if you are expecting elderly guests and children. Getting down to a beach can be difficult, especially if there isn’t a handicap accessible access. This can prove difficult for those with walkers, wheelchairs or strollers. The same applies to weddings in wooded areas. Uneven trails can trip up guests and prove to be a problem for anything with wheels. For a ceremony away from the ocean breeze, be aware that ticks,
34
Bride and Groom 2017-2018
spiders and mosquitoes may decide to join the fun. Have bug spray available for guests and comb the area beforehand for any spider webs or reptiles. Intersperse citronella candles in table settings to help keep critters at bay and be sure food remains covered. While seclusion makes for a romantic setting, there are some things that you can’t go without. Access to electricity may be problematic if the outdoor wedding isn’t near an existing structure. Electricity is needed for music equipment and lights. If the wedding takes place away from an indoor location, portable bathrooms may also be needed, along with tables, chairs, tents, utensils and linens. Sound equipment may also be necessary so guests can hear the service over the sounds of the surf. Keep in mind that cut flowers tend to wilt prematurely in hot weather. Rather than waste money and beautiful flowers, choose potted plants that will thrive if well tended. Guests can then take the plants home and continue to cherish the wedding long after it is over. While sunset pictures are nice, it can be difficult to capture that moment. Schedule the ceremony to begin an hour or two before sunset so you can get the photos you want. Let the photographer know that the wedding will be outside so he or she can be prepared. Make sure to let guests know in the invitation that it is an outdoor wedding so they can dress appropriately. When having a beach wedding, if shoes are optional, include that as well. But be careful – in the summer months, sand can get quite toasty. Perhaps you can offer a basket of affordable flip flops for folks to use to access the beach. While there is a lot to take into consideration when planning an outside event, with some careful planning an outdoor wedding can be worth the extra time – especially when you take our region’s stunning scenery into consideration.

Creating the Playlist Few things set the tone for a wedding ceremony and reception better than music. Music establishes ambience and serves to transition guests through the various components of the day. While the wedding itself is usually accompanied by music, it’s the reception when guests and the wedding party can let their hair down and celebrate. Music plays a vital role. While a single musician may provide music for the service, tunes at the reception usually come from a band or DJ and features a variety of genres. Not only does this person provide the beat for a night of dancing, but they’re also responsible for the playing the music for those special moments, including the father/daughter dance and first dance. The decision to hire a band or DJ often comes down to personal preference, space and the budget. The following are some things couples can consider as they decide which is right for them.
Band
Live musicians spend years honing their crafts, and watching a band play at a wedding reception can be akin to attending a concert. A live band can bring with it a sense of sophistication. Performers can tone the music to the crowd and improvise if necessary to meet the needs of the room. A good bandleader also will serve as a master of ceremonies at the reception. Many wedding bands can competently play songs from various genres of music, while some are especially skilled at recreating the sound of a particular group. Bands do tend to be more expensive than DJs, and that’s something couples must factor into their budgets if they prefer a band to a DJ. If taking this route, be careful not to be swayed by amateurs who offer up a live show at a reduced rate. Everyone has a friend or a family member that knows someone with a garage band. That might be great for a backyard barbecue, but on your wedding you want to make sure you are hiring a professional who is well

Making a List
Songs need to be chosen for a variety of special moments during the ceremony. When making your list, don’t forget songs for: •
When the guests arrive and leave the ceremony.
•
The bride’s walk down the aisle.
•
When the wedding party leaves the ceremony.
•
The first dance.
•
Father/daughter dance.
•
Mother/son dance.
•
Cutting of the cake.
•
Bouquet and garter tosses.
•
Background music for speeches.
Band or DJ for Your Big Day?
versed in the numerous needs during a reception. Be sure to listen to a sample of the band’s work before committing. It is also a good idea to make sure the band is open to learning the songs you would like to use for any special dances.
DJ
The DJ is one of the first vendors people think of when they envision a wedding reception. Perhaps because they are less expensive, DJs tend to be more popular than bands among today’s couples. DJs are advantageous for various reasons. Thanks to the accessibility of digital music, DJs can often procure just about any song a couple desires for the reception. That’s a significant benefit for couples who want to hear the original versions of their favorite songs, and not a band’s take on those songs. DJs can also read the crowd and make adjustments to the music at any time. If a particular genre is not working, DJs can easily transition to another type of music to get guests back on their feet. That’s not always possible for bands whose repertoire is exclusive to a particular genre. In addition, many DJs can blend songs seamlessly and may incorporate lights and other effects into their performances, which can encourage guests to loosen up and hit the dance floor. No matter which road a couple chooses to travel, it’s a good idea to listen to a DJ or band perform in a live situation if time allows. Couples also should confirm that the performers they meet or audition will be the ones who will perform at their weddings. Make sure this is written into your contract. Couples will be expected to provide a list of songs they want to hear well in advance of their wedding day. This affords a DJ ample time to find each song and gives bands the necessary time to learn the songs before the big day arrives.
Laying the Best Foundation As guests’ eyes are trained on couples come their wedding days, it is no surprise that both the bride and groom want to look flawless on their big days. Men and women will spend thousands of dollars on clothing, hairstyles, makeup, teeth whitening, fitness classes, and more to ensure they look their best. While couples may be particularly concerned with their wedding day appearance, what they wear under their clothing – particularly for women – can impact how clothes fit and look. Choosing the right bra and foundation garments can play a crucial role in how a gown fits and whether or not brides achieve that picture-perfect look. While looking great is paramount, it is also important that bride be comfortable. Nobody wants to spend their wedding day tugging and clothing that keeps riding up or falling down. According to a study done by Swiss lingerie company Triumph, a large number of women are choosing their bras incorrectly. The international survey of 10,000 women found that 64 percent of them are wearing the wrong size bras. If women are wearing the wrong undergarments for everyday looks, it stands to reason that their wedding choices may not be spot on, either. Resist the urge to purchase undergarments until you have chosen the dress, even if you find the perfect corset. All dresses are not created equal and each will require specific foundations to make them lay properly. Undergarments should be purchased and brought to all fittings as soon as a gown is selected. In fact, it often is a good idea to ask the bridal store employees to suggest a bra or corset that will complement the gown and remain invisible beneath the dress. Some shops will make bras available when trying on gowns. Brides are not obligated to purchase undergarments where they purchase
their gowns, but take note of the brand and style and find a similar one elsewhere that fits with your budget if you don’t want to buy at the store. Pay attention to the gown’s fabric and how dense it is. Certain shapewear, including bras, that have a lot of boning in them to shape and support the body can show under bridal dresses without a lot of layers. Always try on the bra with the gown to gauge the finished look. You may opt for simpler lingerie styles so that you will be guaranteed a seamless appearance. In turn, some dresses may provide enough support that a bra isn’t necessary at all. Nude-colored bras tend to be less noticeable than white. You can always purchase something with more pizzazz to change into for the wedding night. Some dresses with plunging necklines or backless designs may necessitate other options. Sewn-in bra cups are another option that can lend invisible support. Be sure to ask your seamstress who sizes your dress if it is possible to sew in a little extra support. Women with more ample busts may want to select gowns that will allow for bras with supportive straps to be worn. This way there is no worry about strapless bras slipping down. In addition to bras, other types of shapewear can enhance certain areas of the body or downplay perceived flaws. Shapewear can smooth and pull in stomachs and help create more accented waistline. Choose boy shorts or thong-style underwear for a seamless finish. Shapers can smooth out bulges on the back, legs and hips, too. There are even special shorts that have some padding in the rear to create a more curvy look. Bras and other shapewear can make a world of difference in how wedding attire looks and feels. Invest in some quality pieces that will highlight wardrobes to their fullest. www.nccoast.com

Bride and Groom 2017-2018
Q. How early did you start planning? A few weeks after we got engaged we decided we wanted to get married in spring, but we had gotten engaged in early fall so time was of the essence. Q. What factors did you take into consideration when choosing a venue? Sean and I had our first date at the Island Grille and it has always been a favorite of ours! I had worked with Aimee (Dykeman – Island Grille and Celebration Cottage) and her team a few times before on the catering side of things and knew what a friendly and fun loving yet detail oriented team they are, these factors made the Celebration Cottage an easy choice. Q. How did you add little touches of yourselves into your big day? When we sat down and planned our big day we knew we wanted a great band, a memorial first dance and to have my oldest dog and Sean’s grandfather play a role in our ceremony. We were able to have a laid back nontraditional beach wedding. I was able to buy lots of personalized yet affordable items on Etsy and had nothing but positive experiences Q. What were the biggest challenges in planning your wedding? Sean and I made an agreement to make the wedding planning as stress free as possible. We tended to not over think things but go with our gut! Laying out our initial budget was a challenge but once we were able to figure out something that worked with us we just tried our best to keep to it. Q. Are there things that you wish you knew ahead of time and didn’t? Wish we had known how very little time I would have on our wedding day between hair and makeup. I had spent a lot of time working out where to put each and every detail and the placement of decor, Zena ended up setting up all of our decorations and it was beyond perfect without either of us lifting a finger! Q. What advice would you give to brides and grooms in the process of planning their special day? Having a planner was our biggest blessing! Zena and the whole team at the Celebration Cottage made our day so enjoyable and relaxing I cannot imagine how lost we would have been without them. We also decided to take dance lessons for a several weeks and we were excited to be able to share it with our friends and family, and we still love to dance!

Our Favorite Wedding Tips There is a lot of wedding advice that will be doled out as you start planning for your big day, but sometimes the basics are overlooked. Here are a few simple tricks and tips to get the most out of your dream wedding.
1. Start early – The better the planning, the more you will be able to relax when the day arrives. A full 12 months is recommended to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch. That doesn’t mean weddings haven’t been pulled together in a fraction of the time. But it also means that taking your time and slowly getting everything in order is far less stressful in the long run. 2. Remember that you can’t please everyone – Someone is inevitably going to be unhappy with the menu or the seating chart or how warm the sun feels. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. Sure, you want your guests to be happy and comfortable, but first and foremost the day is for the couple and should be designed based on their dreams and desires. 3. Work together and enjoy each other through the process – For some couples, this may be first time they’ve tackled a large-scale task as a team. Be open to each other’s opinions and enjoy each other’s company as the planning process evolves.
4. Don’t sweat the small stuff – And it’s all small stuff, right? Prioritize what is most important to you and spend the mental energy where it counts. Perhaps the location and getting all your sisters together is more important than anything else. Make sure that happens and don’t sweat it if the roses you ordered are a lighter pink than anticipated. 5. You can’t do it alone – So don’t think you can. It takes a small army of dedicated folks to put together a wonderful wedding. Recruit your mom, your bridesmaids as well as your fiancé to get everything in place. From choosing the dress to addressing invitations, pull together help when you can to help alleviate stress. 6. Take advantage of technology – From providing directions to the wedding and reception location to listing local hotels for out of town guests, a wedding website is ideal for getting information out to both guests and members of the bridal party instead of repeating the information over and over to each person who asks. In turn, Google Docs and dropboxes are great for planning purposes. Want to share a couple of menu options with your parents or your maid of honor – simply create a document that is shared among the bridal party and they can check it regularly for updates.
7. Prepare for unforeseen emergencies – A wedding is just an upset waiting to happen. From spills and wardrobe malfunctions to hang nails, keeping an emergency wedding kit on hand can help take the worry out of any problems just waiting to arise. Tampons, a mini-sewing kit, bleach pens, socks, deodorant, bug spray, hairspray and bobby pins, eye drops and bandages are just a few of the items you may want to consider. 8. Break in your shoes ahead of time – And pack some flats just in case. We’ve all had those hellish shoe days where you find yourself wandering around work in your bare feet. Avoid that on your wedding day by spending plenty of time around the house stretching those new shoes to perfection. Keep flats or even some sleek slippers on hand as a just in case so blisters don’t put a damper on your mad dancing skills. 9. If you forgo the wedding planner, hire a day-of coordinator – If planning a large wedding, a planner is really a
must. They have the ability to bargain with vendors and have great tips and tricks that can save you a world of stress on the big day. If you’re determined to go at it alone, a day-of coordinator is great at managing the wedding day flow. From making sure everyone is exactly is where they need to be when they should be to prompting the band for the father-daughter dance, having a traffic cop on hand ensures that everything flows exactly as it should.
10. Eat – It seems so simple, but you would be amazed how many brides and grooms spend the entire day without eating a real meal. Start the day with a high protein breakfast to boost your energy and make sure you take time during the ceremony to sit down and enjoy the great catering. You’ll be glad you did. 11. Relax – Once the business of the day is behind you, take time at the reception to put your feet up and take it all in. Odds are, in retrospect, the day will be a whirlwind of activity. Take the time to step back and look around you – smell the roses, enjoy the guests and revel in the magical day you have created. 12. Have boxes on hand to take everything home – You inevitably leave the wedding with a lot more than you came with. Having some boxes on hand makes it easy to load up the gifts, flowers, centerpieces and any other items you have collected along the way – a task that usually falls to the best man and groomsmen. If you are leaving on your honeymoon immediately following the ceremony, make sure that someone has access to your home to deliver everything.

ID, a passport or military ID). All applicants under 18 should contact the register of deeds before applying. Applicants divorced or widowed within six months preceding the application date must present a filed copy of their final divorce decree or a copy of the death certificate. Prior to completing the marriage license application, parties will need to know their parents’ full names including mother’s maiden name, state of birth and current address (if possible). Marriage licenses are good for 60 days and there is no waiting period after issuance. After the ceremony, the license must be signed by the officiant and returned to the register of deeds office to be filed with the state. Certified copies of the document can be purchased for around $10, and will be needed for the bride to officially change her name. For additional information:
Making it Legal While we’d like to think it’s all romance and lace that brings a couple together in matrimony – the long arm of the law actually calls them husband and wife. That means every couple must be armed with a license before saying their vows, and must register that license after the big day has occurred. In North Carolina, marriage licenses are obtained at the register of deeds in each county. Current fees are $60, and payment is required in cash or credit only. No blood tests are necessary in North Carolina, however, both parties must be present and all applicants must provide their Social Security card (or documentary proof, i.e. W-2 form, payroll stub) along with proper identification (certified copy of birth certificate accompanied by a driver’s license or picture

The place to start is with the Social Security Administration. Our local office is located at 1420 McCarthy Blvd., New Bern and is open from 9am-4pm Monday through Friday. Since it can take several days for the agency to enter your new information, it may be best to wait a day or two before visiting the driver’s license and automobile registration offices. From there, with a new driver’s license in hand, brides should have no trouble changing their name on their passport or with their employer. It’s also a good idea to get in touch with your insurance provider, financial institutions, creditors, utility companies, physicians, post office, professional licensing boards, voter registration board, alumni associations and other professional organizations.

Cheers!
Toasting the New Couple While it’s definitely a great honor there is a certain amount of pressure that comes with taking the role of best man or maid of honor – and the all-important toast is certainly one of the most nerve wracking. From picking formal wear to planning the menu, supporting those we are close to as they plan their wedding can be a joy. But as tradition dictates, these members of the wedding party are generally the first to toast the happy couple as they begin their life together. And while there are a few in our midst who welcome the chance to address a crowd, most of us are
48
Bride and Groom 2017-2018
more than a little squeamish at the notion of public speaking. A little forethought and planning can take a lot of the anxiety out of the process. Many best men and maids of honor are in the dark when it comes time to actually sit down and pen their toasts. After all, giving a wedding toast to commemorate your best friend’s marriage is not an everyday event, and for many it will be a one-time experience, if even at all. Note that traditionally, the best man is the first to toast the couple, followed by the maid of honor. The two can elect to
give a joint toast, can present them one right after the other or separately at different times. Once these toasts are out of the way, the floor is open for the parents to toast the union or for the couple to give a toast thanking their guests and family members. Be sure to speak with the bride and groom beforehand to see if they have a preference about how the toast is presented and if they have anything specific they would like mentioned. Once the rules are set, the speech writing can begin. But don’t think of this as a return to college – whether your write the speech out long hand or simply provide some notes for yourself to follow, having an idea of what you’re going to say before the big day arrives ensures that it will go off without a hitch.
Do: Stand up! Sitting down won’t command the guests’ attention,
and your voice likely won’t carry as well if you’re sitting down. Introduce yourself. Although the lucky couple knows who you are, chances are a good portion of the guests do not. When making your introduction be sure to explain your relationship to the bride or groom (older/younger sibling, college roommate, etc.). Thank the guests. It’s a great way to break the ice. Be sure to include thanks to the hosts. While this is traditionally the bride’s parents, today this often includes the parents of the groom as well, so thanking both sets of parents can help avoid stepping on any toes. Keep things light. While jokes should remain appropriate, as every wedding has kids in attendance, keeping the toast jovial is a good way to keep the festive mood of the day moving. Add an anecdote. Add a light-hearted anecdote that illustrates your relationship and how much they mean to you. Toasters probably have a vault full of funny anecdotes to share about the bride or groom, just be sure the story is appropriate for all members of the audience.

Practice. Very few people can survive “winging” a wedding toast. Practice the toast beforehand so you’re comfortable with what you’re going to say before the moment arrives. Remember – you only get one attempt. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Weddings are typically laid-back and fun affairs, so don’t stress about giving the perfect toast. If the toast comes off as genuine and remains appropriate, it’s a good one.
Don’t: Drink too much. While everyone knows to raise a glass at the
end of the toast, the best man or maid of honor sometimes raise too many glasses themselves before it’s time to give their toast. Don’t drink in excess before it’s time for your big moment or you’ll risk being the talk of the reception for all the wrong reasons. Be too long winded. Everyone loves your childhood tales and stories about that college ski trip, but this isn’t the time to break it down from beginning to end. Be short, sweet and to the point. Talk about yourself. When gushing about your best bud it’s easy to talk about your own successes, but this isn’t the right time for it. Focus on the couple and the many years of happiness you hope they have together. Put anybody down. Just because you have a beef with someone in attendance doesn’t mean it’s fair to take a jab at them during the reception. Share anything too personal. Keep the varied age of the wedding guests in mind when choosing your words. This isn’t the best time to discuss former exploits that are better suited to the bachelor/bachelorette gathering. Give a toast unless you were asked to. Don’t let the tinkling of the forks against the glasses let you feel like this is the best time to share just how excited you are about this union. As a general rule, toasts are pre-planned by the bride and groom. Instead, take a moment with them privately to share your well wishes.

Pack an Emergency Wedding Day Kit Brides- and grooms-to-be hope and pray their wedding day will go off without a hitch. After a year or more of planning and writing checks for so many things, couples hope that it all comes together in the end. For most it does. Others may need a little help keeping things on track. Although the idea is to hope for the best, being prepared for a few obstacles along the way can ensure the day goes smoothly. Many couples find it wise to pack an emergency kit, stocked with items to make repairs or handle tie ups with ease. Don’t forget: •

Trend While strapless ball gowns have been a mainstay in the bridal market, this year sees a swing towards something we’ve seen little of in the last decade – sleeves. From small spaghetti straps to delicate lace, straps are making a comeback as a design element and the results are delightful. Teamed with the daring plunging necklines from last fall’s bridal shows and lots of romantic, intricate lace work, beautiful layers of texture and slight hints of colors, we may be seeing a bridal gown revolution under way. And we’re excited by what we’re seeing. We’ll let you decide if the new looks are right for your big day.
