THE Beach From Atlantic Beach, the oldest of the five beach towns that dot Bogue Banks, to Emerald Isle, the largest, visitors find mile after mile of sun, sand and surf. The collection of communities feature a variety of accommodations, restaurants and shopping. The area, while limited in full-time population, swells each summer as second home owners and vacationers make the trek to the shore. BEHIND THE SCENES: Get up close with the wildlife at the NC Aquarium each Saturday with Behind the Scenes – Aquarium Close Encounters. The program runs from 2 to 3:30pm and is appropriate for age 8 and up. The cost is $20, but the opportunity to watch the staff at work behind the magic curtain is well worth the price of admission. Learn more, or make reservations by calling 252-247-4003. RUNNING ON THE ISLAND: Find your running shoes and whip that training into high gear. The Emerald Isle Marathon returns Saturday, March 10, for a picturesque run along the island beginning from the town’s Western Ocean Regional Access. The event includes a half-marathon and 5K runs for those less industrious. Learn more and sign up at www. emeraldislerun.com.

BIRD WATCHING: Hike along the trails at Fort Macon State Park with rangers at 9am on Monday, Feb. 12, to spot and identify some of the amazing birds that call this slice of paradise home. From shore birds to song birds, there is a lot to see in the maritime forest. Registration is free. Meet at the visitor center.

Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come

10

to the National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

Going Green in Emerald Isle

It’s normally a friendly, quiet beach town with visitors filtering in throughout the year for a week or a weekend at the shore. With a population of about 4,000, it keeps a pretty low profile. But one weekend a year, anywhere from 20,000 to 30,000 visitors converge on the Emerald Plantation Shopping Center for one of the east’s largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. On Friday and Saturday, March 16-17, the party returns with over 80 arts and crafts vendors, amusement rides for the little ones, live music, a beer garden and more. While the festival is great for the local economy during the off-season, it also comes at the perfect time for a pre-season bash, a chance to chase away any cobwebs that may have grown up around our feet as we await the warmth of summer. So what can you expect? Lots of green, from outlandish hats to polka dot socks, nothing is too silly for the St. Patrick’s Festival. Green tuxedos, flashy glasses, leprechaun costumes, we’ve seen them all through the years. “With the festival taking place on St. Patrick’s Day this year, there is a little extra excite-

16

www.nccoast.com

ment amongst the festival organizers,” shared Sarah Cutillo with the Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation Dept. “We are wrapping up vendor assignments and almost everything has been confirmed for a successful day. The rides will once again be open on Friday evening which is when we see a lot of the local children come out. We are excited for another fun-filled event!” If green is the fashion color for the day, then festive is certainly the theme. There is plenty to keep everyone busy throughout the day-long party. One of the rules from the early days is still followed today – everything sold at the festival is handmade or hand authenticated. The Friday preview allows folks to purchase an armband for $15 and take unlimited rides from 5 to 10pm. It’s not until Saturday, however, that things kick in to high gear with all vendors present from 9am to 6pm and a full slate of live music throughout the day. Be sure to be on the lookout for the Port City Pipes & Drums parading through the festival. Need a spot to rest? Swing by the Shamrock Stop for a place to sit and eat or simply rest your feet for a spell.

WHOLE HOG: Barbecue is important in Eastern North Carolina and the town of Newport pays homage to one of our favorite foods each spring with the Newport Pig Cookin’ competition. Planned for April 6-7, the contest comes alive with an opening parade, craft vendors, kiddie rides, live entertainment and plenty of food. Barbecue plates and sandwiches are available beginning around noon on Saturday. A drive-thru line is available for those who just need a quick fix!

CHOCOLATE LOVERS PARADISE: Everything is all about chocolate Feb. 3-4 at the Crystal Coast Civic Center at the annual Carolina Chocolate Festival. Chocolate vendors, chocolate dipped fruit, chocolate baking contests, chocolate pudding eating competitions – chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. Oh, and a run. Things get started Saturday morning with a 5K run, so you can easily burn off some calories ahead of the fun! BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate. IN THE SPIRIT: The rural Cajun Mardi Gras celebration comes to Down East Carteret County on Saturday, Feb. 10, thanks to popular local band The Unknown Tongues. Held annually at the Gloucester Community Center, the event includes a Fool’s Procession, live music, children’s king and queen coronation, a bead toss and plenty of gumbo! Free to participate. Costumes and masks are encouraged! If you play an instrument, bring it along. Things get started at 11am. Directions can be found at www.unknowntongues.com/gmg.

TRAFFIC CHANGES: Be alert to changing traffic patterns in Beaufort during February and March. As of press time, the new high rise bridge connecting Beaufort to Morehead City is slated to open at the end of January, creating new routes to both downtown Beaufort’s beautiful waterfront and the picturesque Down East region. Watch for detour signs and please be safe!

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: Ever wonder what all those volunteers and members do at the Beaufort Historic Site? Here’s your chance to learn more about it. The Historical Association will hold its annual Membership Drive from 2-4pm on Sunday, Feb. 11, allowing potential members the opportunity to learn more about the organization and its preservation efforts. Learn more by calling 252-728-5225.

ECHO THE WHALE: Spend Valentine’s Day with the NC Maritime Museum, Beaufort, and learn about Echo, it’s 33.5-foot sperm whale skeleton and the effort to prepare it for exhibit. The free Heart of the Sea program begins at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 14. 28

Music

While it’s sometimes challenging to get us outside much during the cooler temperatures, there is always plenty of bright spots on the winter calendar. Thanks, in part, go to the active arts organizations along the Crystal Coast, including the Down East Folk Arts Society. Formed in 1993, the organization fosters and promotes the enjoyment of traditional, multicultural and contemporary folk music, dance and storytelling in Carteret and Craven counties. And each year, the organization plays host to a diverse calendar of musicians, with featured performances in both New Bern and Beaufort. New Bern programs are held on Friday at the Trent River Coffee Co. and Beaufort concerts

are at Joslyn Hall on the campus of Carteret Community College on Saturday night. To purchase tickets, or learn more, call 252-646-4657 or visit www.downeastfolkarts.org. Upcoming performances include Kerry Grombacher on Feb. 17; Johnsmith on March 24; Si Kahn & Joe Jencks on April 21; and Chirstie Lenee on May 12. In the western end of the county, the Seaside Arts Council is providing something to tap your toes to this winter at Swansboro Town Hall complete with a cash bar. Heartbreaker, a Heart tribute band, visits on Saturday, Feb. 10 and KZ & the Cruisers stops in on Saturday, March 10. To purchase tickets, visit www.seasideartscouncil.com.

Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

The trials and tribulations of North Carolina’s third oldest town are preserved and remembered through the nearly 60-year-old Beaufort Historical Association and its accompanying site. With restored buildings and a variety of annual programs, the BHA transports visitors back to the first days of “Fish Towne.” Learn more at www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE

The 56-mile of Cape Lookout National Seashore is home to some of the most natural undeveloped stretches of beach to be found in the United States today. The three barrier islands that make up the park are only accessible by private boat or water ferry, so getting there may require a little planning as well as reservations during the busy summer months. But it’s well worth the journey. Find info at www.nps.gov/calo.

CORE SOUND WATERFOWL MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTER Located on Harkers Is-

land, this clearinghouse of Down East heritage is a must stop for anyone curious about this culturally-rich rural region. Once dependent on the water that surrounds it, Down East families entwined with boat building, decoy carving, hunting and fishing – a story that is told through community exhibits, artifacts and special programs. Details: 252728-1500, www.coresound.com.

HISTORY MUSEUM OF CARTERET COUNTY

Morehead City’s only museum focuses on the rich, abundant history of this waterfront area. Visit an early school room, peek in to Carteret County’s fishing industry and touch the wheels of spy Emeline Pigott’s carriage. The Jack Spencer Goodwin Library, lauded for its genealogy materials, is available for public research. Details: 252-247-7533, www.thehistoryplace. org.

NC AQUARIUM AT PINE KNOLL SHORES

From the Mountains to the Sea, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores explores the wildlife of North Carolina’s waterways with a focus on preservation of the state’s delicate ecosystems. One of the highlights, the 306,000-gallon Living Shipwreck, features sand tiger sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of fish gliding around a three-quarter-scale replica of a German U-boat found off the coast. Details: 252-247-4003, www.ncaquariums.com.

NC MARITIME MUSEUM

One of three maritime museums in the state system, the flagship in Beaufort tells the tale of Eastern North Carolina’s long-standing relationship with the ocean. Museum staff members have been involved with the preservation of artifacts excavated from the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard the Pirate’s vessel that was lost just outside Beaufort inlet. For more info, visit www. ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com.

CROATAN NATIONAL FOREST

Ready for a hike? Get back to nature with the Croatan National Forest, with its collection of hiking trails, boat launches, campgrounds and day-use areas. The Croatan is home to a large number of carnivorous plants native to the area, including the Venus flytrap. Headquarters is located at 141 East Fisher Ave., just outside of New Bern. Visit www.fs.usda. gov.

NEW BERN FIREMEN’S MUSEUM

FORT MACON STATE PARK

TRYON PALACE This regal centerpiece to New Bern’s historic districts is a reproduction of the mansion constructed in 1770 for Colonial Governor William Tryon, who, after spending just a year in the home, fled North Carolina to become governor of New York. The original home was destroyed by fire in 1798. Site includes the NC History Center, a state-of-the-art museum, theater and meeting space. Learn more at www.tryonpalace.org.

With a new visitor’s center and a schedule of daily programs, the state’s second most visited park continues to draw visitors to the northern peak of Bogue Banks with its 385 acres of beach, dunes and maritime forest. The well-preserved pentagonal brick fortress garrisoned for the Spanish-American War is always a favorite. Visit www.ncparks.gov. 30

Trace the steps of the first chartered fire brigade, the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company, and its competitors, the New Bern Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1. Established in 1955, the museum is currently raising funds to restore the Central Fire Station on Broad Street to its 1928 appearance, with hopes of relocating into the space. There’s no dining room, just a small easy-to-miss brick building. At the window, you place your order (trust us, make it a shrimpburger). The server writes the order on a paper sack, which soon will be handed out with your meal inside: fried shrimp, tartar sauce, coleslaw, and ketchup, all piled on a steamed bun. Messy and totally yummy.” - Coastal Living Magazine
