“Near the center of Bogue Banks, a barrier island off Morehead City, you pull into the parking lot of what looks like a 1960’s burger stand. There’s no dining room, just a small easy-to-miss brick building. At the window, you place your order (trust us, make it a shrimpburger). The server writes the order on a paper sack, which soon will be handed out with your meal inside: fried shrimp, tartar sauce, coleslaw, and ketchup, all piled on a steamed bun. Messy and totally yummy.” - Coastal Living Magazine

THE Beach From Atlantic Beach, the oldest of the five beach towns that dot Bogue Banks, to Emerald Isle, the largest, visitors find mile after mile of sun, sand and surf. The collection of communities feature a variety of accommodations, restaurants and shopping. The area, while limited in full-time population, swells each summer as second home owners and vacationers make the trek to the shore. BEACH-SIDE DINING: Searching for a great seafood dinner? Hop over to the Crab’s Claw, one of the area’s only true ocean-front restaurants, for a good old-fashioned steamer pot of delights from the sea.
START OF THE SEASON: Welcome the official start of summer on Atlantic Beach on Saturday, May 27. The town marks the Memorial Day weekend each year with a rousing fireworks display at 9pm at the Circle. Chairs and blankets are welcome, however, guests are asked to leave dogs and glass containers at home. BIKING THE BANKS: Like to think of yourself as quite a cyclist? Boy, have we got the event for you. Be sure to check out the annual Bike the Banks bike ride, featuring a 10-mile Fun Run, a Fort Macon 50-mile ride and a 100-mile journey to Cape Lookout and back. This non-race, planned for Saturday, May 6, helps support the Emerald Isle bicycle and pedestrian path. To learn more, or to register, visit www.active.com. BEACH RUNS BEGIN: Carteret County Parks and Recreation’s popular Beach Run Series hits the beach for the first two races of the season May 16 and 30. Each run includes a 1-mile, 5K and 10K route. Walkers are welcome in the 1-mile and 5K. Cumulative points are tallied throughout the season, however, visitors are always welcome. Additional races will be held June 15 & 29, July 13 & 27 and Aug. 15. Learn more at ccpr.recdesk.com/recdeskportal. 8

LIVING HISTORY: People often remember their history classes as boring and dry. Fort Macon State Park will change some of that Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23 during its popular Living History Weekend. The First NC Volunteers/11th NC Regiment and other reenactment groups will bring the Civil War era to life from 10am4pm each day, offering visitors a glimpse back in time. Here, history is more than a lesson in a textbook – it’s a weekend long visual example that one can question and touch and explore first hand.

Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come

to the National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

THE MAINLAND From Cape Carteret on the shores of the White Oak River to the downtown Morehead City waterfront, the small communities that dot the Carteret County mainland are as eclectic as their residents. As the retail hub of the region, centrallylocated Morehead City is a haven for shoppers with its small boutiques and major chain stores. But don’t overlook the smaller communities as each has a flavor all its own and plenty of treasures to explore. CAROLINA BARBECUE: Newport Town Park becomes the hub of activity April 7-8 for the town’s annual Pig Cooking competition. Dubbed as the largest whole hog competition in the country, chefs come from far and wide to participate. Opening ceremonies and a parade are held on Friday and the grill masters get to work. The fruits of their labors go on sale midday on Saturday. Live music is scheduled both days, with rides for the kiddies and lots of fun carnival vendors.
FRUITS, VEGGIES & MORE: The state’s longest running Curb Market opens this spring for its 86th year featuring handmade and homegrown goodies, from art to fruits and veggies. Located on the corner of Evans and 13th streets in Morehead City, the market is open from 7:30 to SHAPING UP FOR SUMMER: Dust off your running shoes and get ready 11:30am. for summer with the Lookout Rotary’s annual Spring Road Race on Saturday, April 22, at the Morehead City Train Depot with a Port to the Fort course. Family friendly, the event includes a 1-mile run, 5K run and fitness walk, a 5K wheelchair event and a half-marathon, with prizes in a variety of categories. Those who don’t win a medal will have a chance to console themselves with massage therapy, on-site, after the race. We like their way of thinking. Learn more at www.lookoutrotaryroadrace.com..
WHET YOUR WHISTLE: Looking for a perfect martini? Stop by the Arendell Room in downtown Morehead City for an array of creative blends to tempt your palate.

TIGHT HARMONIES: The Honey Dewdrops come to Morehead City to perform their own brand of folksy Americana surrounded by the clawhammer, banjo, mandolin, guitars and maybe a fiddle or two. The duo takes the stage at Joslyn Hall on the campus of Carteret Community College, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Down East Folk Arts Society. General admission is $16. Find Your Next Boat at the Crystal Coast Boat Show
Celebrating a milestone this year, the Crystal Coast Boat Show returns to downtown Morehead City May 19-21. With additional dock space this year near Jaycee Park, the show has the ability to stretch out and accommodate a growing number of vessels, both on land and in the water. Which is great news for this 10-year-old celebration of all things nautical. “We have become one of the largest boat shows in the eastern part of the state,” said Capt. Steve Miller, chairman of the Boat Show committee. “Before the end of last year’s show, dealers and vendors were signing up for the 2017 show. Each year this boat show continues to attract people in the market for buying the boat of their dreams.” The Crystal Coast Boat Show features both new and used boats and showcases a variety of marine products and services, outdoor gear, fishing tackle, brokers and resource conservation groups. The boat show is free and open to the public from 9am-5pm on Saturday, May 20 and 9am-4pm on Sunday, May 21. This year, it kicks off with a new event from 9am-4pm on Friday, May 19. Whether you’re looking for your first boat, or you’re ready to trade up, new and used boat dealers will be on hand all weekend to help you explore the options. In partnership with the Carteret Community 22
www.nccoast.com
College, the Boat Show offers an expanded education program, “Boating DIY.” Individuals interested in learning more about boating and maintenance are encouraged to attend morning and afternoon classes hosted by the college’s MARTEC Boat Program and the Marine Propulsion System while a working lunch will be hosted by the college’s culinary program. Classes are $40 each or $100 for all three. All proceeds go toward a scholarship fund benefitting students from Carteret Community College pursuing a culinary, marine propulsion or boatbuilding degree. The Morehead City chapter of the Antique Automobile Club will be on hand as well, showcasing vehicles from 9am-3pm on Saturday, May 20, at Katherine Davis Park. Also on tap, the Sunshine Band will perform at 10:30am in Jaycee Park. On Sunday, May 21, the Morehead City After Hours Rotary Club takes over the park for its annual Cornhole Tournament starting at 12:30pm. Burgers, hot dogs and beverages will be available for sale. To register, or for more information, email afterhoursrotary@gmail.com. In addition, the nonprofit Sail Carteret will offer free sailboat rides and sailing races at the 10th Street beach on both Saturday and Sunday. For additional information on the show, visit www.crystalcoastboatshow.com or www.downtownmoreheadcity.com or call 252-808-0440.

BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate. COLONIAL DAYS: Step back in time at the Beaufort Historical Site on Turner Street during Publick Day, planned from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, April 22. The old fashioned flea market is reminiscent of colonial days. When the general court was in session, folks from far and wide would come to town to see and be seen while they conducted their court business. Vendors sold their wares along the roadside while people mingled, gossiped, dined and shopped. At Beaufort’s equivalent, visitors can find vendors selling antiques, vintage items, collectibles, arts and crafts, wood crafts, furniture, hand-made jewelry, baskets and pottery among other things. Best of all? It benefits the historical association’s ongoing preservation and education efforts. For more, call 252-728-5225.
BIRDS-EYE VIEW: Climb the 207 steps and take in a panoramic look at the Crystal Coast from atop the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. The iconic structure opens for climbing the third week in May and welcomes climbers Tuesday through Saturday during the summer months. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for youth 12 and under. Whether you’re a boating enthusiast or prefer to keep your feet on dry land, the 43rd annual Wooden Boat Show has activities for you. The show, organized by the NC Maritime Museum, takes over Front Street in downtown Beaufort from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, May 6 and is the longest ongoing wooden boat show in the Southeast. This free event celebrates the art of wooden boat building, the sport of boat racing and the culture and history that surrounds these works of arts. Dozens of handcrafted wooden boats, full size and model, will be on display, polished and shined, for all to see. Paul Fontenoy, museum curator and Wooden Boat Show coordinator, said the show has something to offer everyone, even if you’re not a wooden boat enthusiast. “We pay a lot of attention to making sure the show is not just interesting for wooden boat enthusiasts,” Fontenoy explained. “We have activities for children and opportunities for families to do things together, such as taking a boat ride.” Highlights of the show include: Wooden Boat Kids – Starting at 10am, children will be invited to sand, design and assemble their own wooden boats. Free Sailboat Rides –On Thursday and Friday, May 4-5, boat rides will be offered from 1-4pm and on Saturday, May 6, free boat rides in a traditional wooden boat will be offered from 1-3pm. Donations are accepted.

Wine & Dine in Beaufort
Tempt your palate this spring as Beaufort Wine & Food launches a near-week full of culinary adventures along the Crystal Coast. Rub elbows with visiting wine makers, learn a few secrets from guest chefs and get to know your favorite local chefs a little bit better as they come together for a variety of events. The nonprofit event – which has donated more than $525,000 to area organizations to date – brings chefs and winemakers to the shores of Carteret County to team up with local chefs. From small, intimate gatherings of 30 or less, to large tented festivals celebrating everything food and wine, the always-anticipated annual undertaking crams a lot of action into a small amount of time, and prides itself on developing offerings that suit just about everyone’s tastes. “Beaufort Wine and Food offers something for everyone – whether it’s an intimate wine dinner in area restaurants or the grand scale of the Vin de Mer Epicurean Village – it’s the perfect venue for a food festival to celebrate the chefs and cuisines of the Crystal Coast and beyond,” said Executive Director Lindsay Parker. Watch for a variety of small venue options this year, including popular wine dinners in private homes on Wednesday, April 26, as well as local restaurants on Thursday, April 27. Here, a trio of personalities – one local chef, a guest chef and a winemaker – come together to create a perfectly-paired menu in 4-6 courses. Participating restaurants include Aqua, Beaufort Grocery, Co., The Boathouse at Front Street Village, Caribsea, Island Grille, La Perla, Pescara and Soundside Steak & Seafood. Those who prefer something a little more laid back will find their sweet spot at the relaxed Vin de Mer Culinary Village from 1-4pm on Saturday, April 29. These tented event at Front Street Village brings together more than 300 wine labels and dozens of local and regional restaurants for what the organization describes as a little bit of “controlled chaos.” It is the see and be seen event of the festival, bringing together the best that Wine & Food has to offer for a 3 hour whirlwind taste test. The Saturday Night Roundup, 7:30-10:30pm on Saturday, provides another relaxed event, this one combining beer and specialty spirits with the wine sampling. Live music will be provided by country music artist Farewell Angelina and a variety of less formal fare is on the menu. Visiting chefs for 2017 include: Baptist Knaven 38

Music, Music, Music
Music Festivals Rule the Spring
We’re always excited that the first round of big events along the Crystal Coast each year bring the opportunity to take in great some live music. From much loved traditional beach music to something little more funky, it’s time to dust off those dancing shoes in preparation for the upcoming music festivals and performances. April 28-29, White Oak Shores Camping and RV Resort, off of Highway 58 in Stella, hosts its 11th annual White Oak Shores Bluegrass Festival. Performers scheduled to appear include: Ted Jones & the Tarheel Boys, Steady Drive, Highway 58, Sideline, Boys from Carolina, Telluride, Three Rivers Band, Damascus Ridge and Constant Change. Want to camp and make a weekend of it? Special packages are available for the weekend. Camping, however, is not required for a day pass. Tickets are $25 per day or $40 for both days. Guests are welcome to bring chairs, blankets and comfort items to enjoy the shows at the site’s amphitheater. Food will be available on site. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit whiteoakshores.com. Always a favorite, the Beaufort Music Festival returns May 19-20 for its 29th event in this picturesque seafront town. The festival, now held at the 42

Beaufort Historic Site on Turner Street and cozy Middle Lane, provides a great opportunity to enjoy rousing sets of free music over the course of two days. Things kick off around 4pm on Friday, May 19, and run from 11am to 10pm on Saturday, May 20. This year’s lineup includes Big Sam’s Funky Nation, The Low Counts, Muddy Magnolias, Polyrhythmics, Elise Davis, Kristin Diable, Quiet Hollers, L-Shape Lot, Dark Water Rising, Frederick the Younger, Blue Cactus, Carolina Dare, 4EverAll and Sarah Shook & the Disarmers. From funk to blues to country and bluegrass, the acts span the spectrum of musical genres, and some break down those barriers. Ones to watch include Louisville, Kentucky-based Quiet Hollers. Tagged alternative country, the deeply thoughtful melodic narratives are anything but mainstream, making it hard to pigeonhole the band into a genre. Our favorite of their released tracks is “Mont Blanc” which is described by the band as a post-apocalyptic love song – certainly a leap from traditional country playlists. Also be on the lookout for Frederick the Younger, with lead singer Jenni Cochran’s smooth 1960s

vibe; The Low Counts, an impressive duo returning for their fourth BMF appearance; and L-Shape Lot, a local favorite from Wilmington who always draws a crowd. No outside alcohol will be allowed, however, beer and wine will be available on site along with food options. A children’s area will set up during the day on Saturday. For a full schedule, visit beaufortmusicfestival.com. On Saturday, May 20, music lovers with have a second option for great free music. The Atlantic Beach Beach Music Festival brings classic shagging music to the shoreline. From 11am to 6pm, the beach will fill with beach music enthusiasts to watch Jim Quick & Coastline, Fantastic Shakers, Band of Oz and the Mighty Saints of Soul perform. “The Circle location is an important part of our past, but it is also a critical part of our future. Holding events like this at the Circle ensures that it will remain the heart of Atlantic Beach while we wait for the commercial redevelopment in area to take hold and, once again, make the Circle our downtown,” said Atlantic Beach Mayor Trace Cooper. Parking is available at the Causeway Shopping Center, Doubletree by Hilton and Carteret Com-
munity College with a free shuttle running every 30 minutes. Coolers are welcome, however, guests are advised to leave glass containers at home along with their pets. Food and beer vendors will also be available on-site. On Saturday, June 3, Atlantic Beach is back in the spotlight as the site of the Crystal Coast Music Festival headlined by Christian rock band from South Carolina Needtobreathe. Supporting acts include Dr. Dog, Shovels & Rope, Bombadil, Los Colognes and Rebekah Todd & the Odyssey. “On the heels of an exceedingly successful and energetic inaugural music festival, we’re delighted to welcome avid sun-seekers and music lovers alike for a spirited new concert tradition,” said Karen Gould, director of digital and event marketing for the Crystal Coast Tourism Development Authority. She noted that more than 2,500 fans attended the first event in 2016. Tickets are $30, plus fees, for general admission and a limited number of VIP tickets are available with preferred entry, a dedicated viewing area, lounge, restrooms and other amenities. Cohorts Don Dixon, Bland Simpson and Jim Wann will perform their popular show, featuring songs and stories of the Carolina coast, on April 8-9 in Joslyn Hall at Carteret Community College. Doors will open at 7pm for the Saturday show, with a 7:30pm start time. Sunday’s show begins at 3pm The music celebrates life on the Carolina coast with upbeat tunes and ballads, along with stories
of pier fishing, shag dancing, ghosts and shifting sands. The late Clive Barnes, former theater critic for the New York Post, called the show “a pure salt-watered delight.” It has had a sold out run in New York in the 1980s and 1990s, played for a month at the Kennedy Center and was filmed by PBS for broadcast. Despite its success, the partners agree that their biggest reward is being able to stage “King Mackerel” for environmentally-focused nonprofits. Tickets are $75-85 for the evening performance, which includes a cast party after the show. Tickets for the Sunday matinee are $30-$40. Both are available online at www.nccoast.org.

The area is home to one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world for blue marlin; other fish caught along the Crystal Coast include bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, red drum, false albacore, sea trout, striped bass, cobia, sailfish, dolphin and wahoo depending on seasons.
