Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come

to the National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

AT THE AQUARIUM Sea Turtle Summer Turtle traffic is picking up on the nighttime beach. Sea turtles usually emerge from their sandy nests after dark and scurry toward the surf for, it’s hoped, a long and prolific life at sea. You can help make this perilous trek easier: • Turn off or shield oceanside lights and flashlights • Fill in holes and level mounds • Take your tents, beach chairs, toys and trash away with you • Leave nests and hatchlings undisturbed While visiting the aquarium, be sure to check out our five sea turtles including: 7-year-old Nimbus the white loggerhead sea turtle, a large green sea turtle, and two sea turtle yearlings. For an adventure outside of the aquarium, the Sea Turtle Trek program is offered twice a week on Sundays and Thursdays. Participants stroll the nighttime beach to discover fasci-
nating facts about the life of sea turtles and look for loggerhead nests. Visit the aquarium’s website for details and registration. Learn how you can Turn the Tide on trash and be part of the conservation effort! That’s the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores’ theme for summer 2017 – inspired by the need to reduce single-use plastics, and the aquarium’s in-house conservation efforts. To emphasize the need for more conservation projects and to show how your help makes a difference, there is a art display open to the public throughout the summer. The art exhibit, provided by Plastic Ocean Project, features a large sculpture and wall art crafted out of plastic pieces collected by the artist from the five major ocean gyres. Different conservation messages are scattered throughout the aquarium as helpful conservation tips – from ways to reduce plastic use, to how individuals can help endangered animals. To show their commitment to conservation, you’ll see how the aquarium is turning the tide on single-use plastics with new water bottle refilling stations that will allow both staff and visitors to refill their reusable water bottles instead of using several single-use plastic water bottles. The NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is 5 miles west of Atlantic Beach at 1 Roosevelt Blvd., Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512. The aquarium is open 9am-5pm daily. For more information, see www. ncaquariums.com/pine-knoll-shores or call 252-247-4003.
“Near the center of Bogue Banks, a barrier island off Morehead City, you pull into the parking lot of what looks like a 1960’s burger stand. There’s no dining room, just a small easy-to-miss brick building. At the window, you place your order (trust us, make it a shrimpburger). The server writes the order on a paper sack, which soon will be handed out with your meal inside: fried shrimp, tartar sauce, coleslaw, and ketchup, all piled on a steamed bun. Messy and totally yummy.” - Coastal Living Magazine

THE MAINLAND From Cape Carteret on the shores of the White Oak River to the downtown Morehead City waterfront, the small communities that dot the Carteret County mainland are as eclectic as their residents. As the retail hub of the region, centrallylocated Morehead City is a haven for shoppers with its small boutiques and major chain stores. But don’t overlook the smaller communities as each has a flavor all its own and plenty of treasures to explore.
PAYING ‘RENT’: The first week of August brings the last chance to catch Carteret Community Theatre’s performance of the award-winning “Rent,” which follows struggling artists living in Manhattan’s East Village. Shows are at 8pm on Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 3-5, and cost $21 for adults and $15 for students. Visit www.carteretcommunitytheatre.com for more info.
LAST CHANCE FOR SUMMER MUSIC: Watch the calendar for your last opportunities to catch some great music along the Crystal Coast. From Emerald Isle and Swansboro to Morehead City, our various summer concert series wrap up in September for the year. If you haven’t had a chance this summer to sit by the water and listen to popular local bands, September, with its cooler evening temps, is a great time to do just that.
FAMILY CAMP OUT: Come out and join the biggest slumber party to ever hit Swansboro. The town parks and recreation departments brings families together under the stars during the Perseid Meteor shower on Friday, Aug. 11, for a camp out at Municipal Park. The evening will include a hotdog roast, s’mores, a free movie, pancake breakfast and sunrise yoga. Learn more at 910-326-2600.

Let the Invasion Begin Get ready for cannons, wenches, sword fighting and grog as Beaufort prepares the town for its annual influx of pirates – the Beaufort Pirate Invasion. Townsfolk will battle the pirates for control of Beaufort on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 11-12. Amid the many contradictory stories surrounding famed and not so famed pirates there is a certain amount of mystery and fantasy. Pirates were caught up in the lure of the sea, living a life with the promise of untold freedoms along with perils to chill the 22
www.nccoast.com
soul. There were many dangerous men and women who would ply the waterways, taking the strongest dare to cross their swords in a deadly spiral of vengeance. Eager souls from all over the world, dishonored lords, court-martialed soldiers, mercenaries, fishermen, outcasts or other unruly folks gathered as thieves as one class of free men – pirates. In 1747, so lore tells us, the scourge of the sea found its way to the sleepy hamlet of Beaufort, overtaking the town and pillaging as they went, running
residents out of town. After three days, Maj. Enoch Ward and Col. Thomas Lovick and their troops along with a band of townsfolk took Beaufort back by force. From the actual 1747 Spanish Attack, many stories (fact and fiction) have been the scuttlebutt around Beaufort. In the day, it was a frightening event for the townsfolk and farmers, but year after year the reenactments have evolved into a slightly different more modern version of that harrowing day. On Aug. 11-12, the story will again be told through music, dance, reenactments, special events and fun for the entire family. The invasion encampment will be set up on the Beaufort waterfront, where guests can watch the ship’s surgeon at work, make baggy wrinkles, tie knots, watch tools forged over a flaming fire and watch as pirates go about their daily routines preparing meals, making ropes and cleaning weapons. Along the waterfront there will be a multitude of activities for all ages to enjoy, from music and magic to children’s costume contests and storytelling. Aspiring young pirates can enjoy spontaneous shenanigans as nefarious characters roam the streets and shops, engaging in mock battles, bursting into song,
and posing for pictures. Oh, and don’t think for one minute that there will be no pirates around. Beaufort will be full of them and you can enjoy the search around town for Beaufort’s Most Wanted Pirates. Special events include: The Buccaneer Revue – Aug. 11, 5:30pm, on the Beaufort Waterfront. Feast with the Most Wanted Pirates, then sit back and enjoy an entertaining display of swashbuckling showmanship & debauchery! Tickets available online. Yo, Ho, Ho, and a Bottle O’ RUN – Aug. 12 on the Beaufort Waterfront. Pirates cheer you on as you run, walk or swagger down the scenic Beaufort waterfront. Prizes for the race winners as well as for the best pirate costumes. Strollers and four-legged friends are welcome. Register online or on race day at 7am. Parlay on the Waterfront – Aug. 12, 7pm, an open air celebration on the Beaufort Waterfront (rain will be under the entertainment tent). A fun evening of magic, fire shows, pirate shenanigans, live music and good cheer. To learn more about the Beaufort Pirate Invasion and a full schedule of events, visit www.beaufortpirateinvasion.com.

BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate. THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Beaufort’s Old Burying Ground is a must visit while on the Crystal Coast. Thanks to technology, visitors will be able to hear stories of those buried in these special gravesites. A new app reveals the sea captains and soldiers, privateers and young mothers, ministers and children who have come to rest under the live oaks. The app can be downloaded from Google Play or the iTunes App Store. KIDS CARVING: Kids can get an introduction to decoy carving at the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild Headquarters near Harkers Island on Aug. 19 and Sept. 16. Youth ages 7 to 15 are invited to try their hand at carving and painting during this free outreach program. Register by calling 252269-2088.
WH OD UN IT? : End summer with a bang at the NC Maritime Museum, Bea ufort, on Friday, Sept. 1. The site’s annual Murder Mystery Dinner asks guests to help solve a mystery whi le rubbing elbows with fortune tellers, palm readers and ghosts. Dinner is catered. Space is limited for this popular even t. Tickets are $40 and can be purchas ed at www.ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com.

TASTE OF CORE SOUND: The bountiful seafood harvest in Carteret County will take center stage at the Summer Taste of Core Sound at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center on Friday, Aug. 25 beginning at 6pm. Beer Festival Holds Sec Prepare to raise a glass Sept. 29-30 to Beaufort Wine and Food’s second annual craft beer festival, Beaufort’s Brewin’. The two-day festival will feature a variety of events held in Beaufort and will range in size from intimate beer dinners, luncheons and seminars to the 500 person Beer, Bubbles and BBQ tasting event at Front Street Village. “Beaufort Wine and Food is excited to once again tap in to this passionate industry and following and offer our second annual craft beer festival late September,” said Lindsay Parker, executive director for BWF. “With over 175 breweries and brewpubs across the state, North Carolina boasts the largest number of brewers in the American South. Beaufort Wine and Food is thrilled to have the opportunity to spotlight the Crystal Coast as a beer destination for our state.” Partnering with regional distributors and over two dozen breweries from across the state and beyond, BWF has crafted a stellar line up of events to generate great exposure for the organization and the Crystal Coast. Modeled after the highly successful wine festival held each spring, the second outing of the beer festival will feature seminars, tastings, dinners, a pub crawl and more. A beer seminar kicks off the event on Friday at the popular Backstreet Pub. The format will allow guests to meet a number of brew masters and brewery owners and sample their product directly. The event begins at 3:30pm and is $20 to attend. On Friday evening BWF is hosting its first ever Pub Crawl. Participating restaurants 30

and venues in downtown Beaufort will offer guests a chance to meet the brewers and sample beer and cuisine pairings at each stop. Tickets are $35. Rounding out Friday evening are beer dinners starting at 7pm in two area restaurants. The dinners will feature the local host chef and guest brewer on site to walk guests through the multi-course menu. Tickets to the beer dinners are $50. On Saturday, guests will have a chance to start off the day on the right foot at the Runnin’ on Empty Road Race. Racers of all levels are invited to partake in the 1-Mile Walk/Fun Run, 5K or 10K. The 5K and 10K races will be timed using RFID technology from IPICO Sports. T-Shirts, commemorative glasses and medals for top runners will all be included. After the race, registered runners are invited to the outdoor beer garden area at the Backstreet Pub for celebratory beer. There will also be root beer available for runners under 21. Once the day’s exercise is out of the way, the festival begins anew with luncheons at two area restaurants at noon. The festival’s main event, Beer, Bubbles & BBQ, is slated for 3-7pm under the tent at Front Street Village and features more than 20 North Carolina craft breweries and brew pubs, with a sampling from across the state and beyond. In addition to tasting dozens of beers, guests will be treated to a variety of BBQ and sides, as a number of regional pitmasters put their best dish forward in a BBQ competition. The winner will be announced during the event and will receive $500 to donate to charity.
Brewin’
ond Event Sept. 29-30 Live music will round out the entertainment for the afternoon event. Tickets are $65 and can be purchased in advance or at the door the day of the event. Featured breweries throughout the weekend include: Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery, Fullsteam, Left Hand Brewing Co., Blake’s Cider, Mother Earth Brewing, Heavy Seas Brewing, Highland Brewing Co., The Unknown Brewing Co., Founders Brewing Co., Victory Brewing Co., and many more. “These events are unique in that they allow festival goers a chance to interact with the brewers and brewery owners who live and breathe beer,” said Parker. “These are the folks whose passion, patience and creativity have produced the amazing beer selections we see both locally and on retail shelves nationwide. They are the ones to credit for
making North Carolina’s beer scene what it is today.” Proceeds from ticket sales go towards BWF’s mission to support local charities and nonprofits that strive to improve life in Carteret County. Since its first festival in 2004, BWF has raised almost $600,000 to donate to area nonprofits – almost $150,000 of that in the last two years. “Our efforts to give back to organizations that support our community are at the forefront of what we do … it’s why we hold events throughout the year and it’s something our members, volunteers and sponsors and guests can be proud of,” Parker said. Tickets and information are available at beaufortwineandfood.com, by calling 252515-0708 or stopping by the BWF office at 129 Middle Lane, Beaufort. Cheers!

Get ready to celebrate seafood in a big way this fall as the NC Seafood Festival takes over the Morehead City waterfront Oct. 6-8 honoring the bountiful harvest of coastal Carolina. Held during the mild climes of the first weekend of October, the Seafood Festival brings a full slate of special events, entertainment, rides, vendors, educational opportunities and enough fun to keep the whole family busy all weekend long. While it’s the music, the Ferris wheel and the chance to pick up wares from favorite arts and crafts vendors that keep visitors entertained, it’s that lure of the catch that brings them there – the ever-present aroma of seafood frying that calls residents and visitors to the waterfront in droves like a Siren’s song for the hungry. Like what you taste? Everyone will be able to take some of the seafood home from the festival’s Open Aire Market as well as gain great information on handling, cleaning and storing fresh seafood. The festival’s vast food offerings are joined by more than 150 vendors. Photography, painting, glass blowing and molding, wood carvings, wall hangings and pottery are just a few of the arts and crafts you can expect to find. Other booths will offer Seafood Fest gear, including T-shirts and
a popular annual poster. While free music is available on multiple stages throughout the weekend, a headlining concert is held Saturday night on the main stage. Check ncseafoodfestival.org for the line up. Other special events include the annual Blessing of the Fleet, held at 10am on Sunday, Oct. 8. Fishermen who have lost their lives to make their living on the sea are honored each year with what many consider the most moving part of the annual festival, the Blessing of the Fleet. Be sure to check out the Southern Outer Banks Boat Show, held on the waterfront each day, as well as the Twin Bridges Road Race, that gets things started on Saturday morning, beginning at 8am at the Beaufort drawbridge. Fireworks are slated for 9pm on Saturday and the Pier Fishing Tournament runs all weekend to give anglers some bragging rights at the Bogue Inlet and Oceanana fishing piers on Saturday and Sunday. The entry fee is $15 per person. In addition, a sailing regatta is held Sunday at noon and Cooking with the Chefs runs throughout the festival. Looking for your perfect introduction to Crystal Coast seafood – look no further. For a full schedule of events, visit ncseafoodfestival.org.

New Hiking Trail Opens in North River
Beginning Sept. 9, hikers from all over will be able to walk through the North River Wetlands Preserve in eastern Carteret County, managed by the NC Coastal Federation, as part of their journey along the statewide Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The NC Trails Program, which is part of the NC Division of Parks & Recreation, is partnering with the federation to route the trail through the 6,000acre preserve. Saturday, Sept. 9 marks MST in a Day, a statewide event to celebrate and hike parts of the trail throughout the state. The federation will hold a ribbon cutting and organize hikes along parts of the 10-mile segment of the trail that runs through the preserve. People can hike or bike. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail runs from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, all the way to Jockey’s Ridge State Park. The trail is currently around 650 miles, and growing. The 10-mile segment that routes through the preserve was officially designated as part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail system in May, but it will not be open to the public until the MST in a Day event in September. “We’re excited that the preserve will connect to the trail beginning this fall. Adding it will expose hikers to even more of the great diversity of the North Carolina coast,” said Sam Bland, coastal specialist for the federation.
The segment that runs through the North River Wetlands Preserve will help hikers navigate an area of the state that is at low elevation. “One of the reasons I’m excited about running the trail through the preserve is because it gets us through a very difficult part of North Carolina, due to low elevation,” said Scott Crocker, manager of the NC Trails Program. “It’s great to partner with the North Carolina Coastal Federation, which has high ground and lets us route the trail over a part that is difficult to navigate.” North River Wetlands Preserve is approximately 6,000 acres of farmland that the federation and its multiple partners, members and community volunteers have been working to preserve and restore back to forested, freshwater and tidal wetlands since 1999. The restored wetlands provide habitat for a variety of wildlife, and over 240 bird species have been recorded at the site. The preserve is great for birding, wildlife spotting, biking and walking. Visitors can often get a glimpse of deer, turtles and snakes. Occasional sightings include bobcats, turkeys, quail, coyotes and river otters. More information about how to register for this event can be found at nccoast.org/events. The master plan of the trail can be found at ncparks. gov. Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

E.I. Beach Music Festival Planned After a successful rebirth in 2016, the Town of Emerald Isle is planning for its second Emerald Isle Beach Music Festival. Slated for Saturday, Sept. 30, organizers are hoping to double the more than 9,000 music lovers who flocked to the Western Ocean Regional Access point for last year’s event. Running from 11am to 6pm on Saturday, Sept. 30, visitors can enjoy the music of Sammy O’Banion, Fantastic Shakers, Band of Oz, Too Much Sylvia, Embers and Chairmen of the Board. Everyone is invited to attend. Parking will be available along Hwy 58 with special needs parking at the ocean access point. Beer and wine are allowed, but only on the beach strand. This isn’t really a new event for Emerald Isle – but rather a reorganized take on a decades old celebration of beach music. Emerald Isle was the place to be each May in the 80s and 90s, as the Emerald Isle Beach Music Festival lured North Carolinians to the beach for what many pegged the “party of the season.” Sun, sand, bathing suits, music, a few Hawaiian Tropics competitions and great 80s hair were front and center for one of the largest annual events the Crystal Coast
Schedule 42
www.nccoast.com
had seen. It was started in 1979 by former mayor Ronnie Watson and according to news accounts, attendance could reach up to 15,000 each year, especially if the weather was ideal. But after a 20year run, the music came to an end – at least until town officials were ready to give it another go in 2016. “The town is very excited to bring back the Emerald Isle Beach Music Festival, which was incredibly successful in the 1980s and 1990s and helped to put Emerald Isle on the map,” Town Manager Frank Rush said last year. “We’re also excited to have the festival on the beach strand itself, with the stage constructed atop the dunes, facing the ocean, with the audience on the beach. It should be a great day in Emerald Isle, and encourage everyone to enjoy it with us! It’s free to the public!” Keep in mind that umbrellas and tents are not permitted within 100 feet of the stage. No beer or wine will be sold on site, although a variety of food vendors will be on hand. With organizers hoping to top 15,000 guests this year, we suggest you arrive early for easy parking and a good vantage point on the beach. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.

Beach Days While there are more than 100 access points tucked into neighborhoods along Bogue Banks, the 25-mile barrier island that runs from Fort Macon to Emerald Isle, they are generally designed for the residents who live in the area and offer limited to no parking for visitors. There are, however, a large number of public beach access points with generous parking for visitors to the area. Several of the larger sites do charge for parking during the season (generally April-September). We have noted where a charge may be incurred. The list below follows the beach from the east to west.

Tee Time Golf enthusiasts rave that Eastern North Carolina suits them to a tee as soon as they discover the terrific and unique courses of the Crystal Coast. Most courses take full advantage of the area’s natural beauty and are built around maritime forests or near the water. When your eye’s not on the ball or focused on the hole, the Crystal Coast’s courses and their natural surroundings are sights to be seen. Spring and fall are considered two of the favorite times for golfing in the area with sunny days and cooler temps, but golfing is truly a year-round attraction in Eastern North Carolina as our terrific climate allows for play almost any time. Most courses feature clubhouses, resident pros, well-equipped pro shops and are open to the public at great rates. All you have to do is call for a tee time. And if you’re a Crystal Coast resident and golfer, ask about the courses’ benefit tournaments held throughout the year. The community is always looking for teams and individuals for tournament play to benefit local organizations. Featured here are some of the best local courses when it comes to North Carolina’s “golf coast.” BEAR TRAIL GOLF CLUB 444 Harris Creek Road, Jacksonville 910-346-8160

Fishing the Coast The warm waters of the Gulf Stream provide the Crystal Coast with the longest fishing season on the Atlantic coast. The area is home to one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world for blue marlin; other fish caught along the Crystal Coast include bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, red drum, false albacore, sea trout, striped bass, cobia, sailfish, dolphin and wahoo depending on seasons. Many species, including drum and flounder, are caught surf fishing. Saltwater and freshwater anglers age 16 and older must have a valid, state-issued recreational fishing license to take fish in North Carolina throughout the year. Specific regulations and restrictions apply including size and daily limits. North Carolina offers a variety of fishing licenses from temporary to lifetime.
