THE Beach From Atlantic Beach, the oldest of the five beach towns that dot Bogue Banks, to Emerald Isle, the largest, visitors find mile after mile of sun, sand and surf. The collection of communities feature a variety of accommodations, restaurants and shopping. The area, while limited in full-time population, swells each summer as second home owners and vacationers make the trek to the shore.

SPLISH SPLASH: The splash pad at Atlantic Beach Town Park, 915 W. Fort Macon Road, is open and ready for summer. The interactive water fountain gives youngsters a great way to cool off after playing at the park. A shaded picnic area can also be found along with the town’s skate park.

YOUTH FISHING AT BOGUE INLET PIER: Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation is hosting the Youth Fishing Derby at Bogue Inlet Pier from 9-11am on Saturday, June 10. The event is free and open to children ages 5-12. Great prizes are awarded in categories ranging from Most Unique Fish Caught to Largest Fish Caught. Rods and reels are not provided, however, bait will be available while supplies last. Preregister by calling 252-354-6350. KIDS’ NIGHT OUT!: Children ages 4-13 can participate in a new program at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. Kids’ Night Out, held each Wednesday from 6-10 pm allows parents to drop off their youngster for a pizza dinner, snacks, animal presentations and crafts, while gaining a little ‘grown up’ time all their own. Learn more at www.ncaquariums.com. MOVIES ON THE SAND: Everyone is welcome to do some stargazing in Atlantic Beach each Wednesday night this summer during the family-friendly outdoor movie series at the Circle. The free movies begin at dusk and run through mid-August. Upcoming movies include: June 7 – “Surf’s Up 2: Wave Mania” June 14 – “The Wizard of Oz” June 21 – “The Secret Life of Pets June 28 – “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” July 5 – “Moana” & “Jaws” July 12 – “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” July 19 – “Sing” July 26 – “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” 8

Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come

10

www.nccoast.com

to the National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

AT THE AQUARIUM Learn how you can turn the tide on trash and be part of the conservation effort! That’s the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores’ theme for summer 2017 – inspired by the need to reduce single-use plastics, and the aquarium’s in-house conservation efforts to help save local and endangered animals. The aquarium cares for a number of animals with compelling rescue stories, such as stranded sea turtle hatchlings, a North American river otter named Eno, and a female brown pelican named Ray. Get to know these animals and more during “Animal Encounter” sessions with live animals throughout the summer. Each day, learn the stories of different animals like reptiles, amphibians, and birds. The aquarium will also offer a new screech owl habitat featuring two small owls from Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary. The two birds, with injuries that make it impossible for them to be released back into the wild, will be cared for at the aquarium and offer an up-close, educational experience for visitors. Children can also participate in a new special program called Kids’ Night Out, held most Wednesdays from 6-10 p.m. throughout the summer. Parents can drop their children off at the aquarium for a pizza

dinner, a live animal presentation and crafts. See the website for the full schedule and be sure to sign up ahead of time. Advance registration is required for all fee-based programs. We’re hosting a special “Night of Mystery” event specifically for families with children! The special fourhour event is designed for ages 8 and up. Youngsters and parents will enjoy dinner and a mystery theater performance that is G-rated. Have children that aren’t old enough to attend the performance? We’re providing supervision and activities for children ages 4 -7 who are too young for the performance. Tickets for the mystery performance are limited as is the availability of supervision for younger children, so register quickly! Special summer observances include World Oceans Day, June 8; Shark Week, July 9-15; Owl Awareness Day, Aug. 4; and Vulture Awareness Celebration, Sept. 1-3. The NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is 5 miles west of Atlantic Beach at 1 Roosevelt Blvd., Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512. The aquarium is open 9am-5pm daily. For more information, see www.ncaquariums.com/pineknoll-shores or call 252-247-4003.

“Near the center of Bogue Banks, a barrier island off Morehead City, you pull into the parking lot of what looks like a 1960’s burger stand. There’s no dining room, just a small easy-to-miss brick building. At the window, you place your order (trust us, make it a shrimpburger). The server writes the order on a paper sack, which soon will be handed out with your meal inside: fried shrimp, tartar sauce, coleslaw, and ketchup, all piled on a steamed bun. Messy and totally yummy.” - Coastal Living Magazine

THE MAINLAND From Cape Carteret on the shores of the White Oak River to the downtown Morehead City waterfront, the small communities that dot the Carteret County mainland are as eclectic as their residents. As the retail hub of the region, centrallylocated Morehead City is a haven for shoppers with its small boutiques and major chain stores. But don’t overlook the smaller communities as each has a flavor all its own and plenty of treasures to explore.

STAND UP & PADDLE: Swansboro Parks and Recreation is partnering with Second Wind Eco Tours to offer paddle boarding lessons for youngsters 9-12. No experience is necessary for this basic course which focuses on balance, coordination, fitness level and confidence. Classes are planned from 9-11am June 22, July 13 & 27 and Aug. 10. Boards, paddles and life vest will be provided. Children must know how to swim. Cost is $45 per session. Register by calling 910-326-2600 or visiting swansboro.recdesk.com.

BUCKIN’ BRONCS: The Newport Flea Mall and event grounds, 196 Carl Garner Road, welcomes the Southern Rodeo Association July 21-22 for two days of good old cowboy fun. Folks will be entertained by bull riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, team roping competitions and other favorites. To learn more, visit www.newportfleamall.com/events.

DAILY CATCH: Looking for a nice late afternoon stroll? The Morehead City waterfront is a great place to catch a glimpse of the area’s most bountiful harvest. Between 4 and 6 each afternoon, head boats and charter boats return to the docks after a long day of fishing, providing the perfect opportunity for folks to catch a glimpse of the daily catch. Unsure of what type of fish it is? Ask the crews while they’re unloading. They’re always happy to share info on their bounty. And you never know – they might just talk you into trying your hand at fishing!

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME … BASEBALL?: Big Rock Stadium at Rotary Park on Mayberry Loop Road in Morehead City is home to the Morehead City Marlins each summer, part of the Coastal Plain’s wooden bat league. The team draws an array of college ball players eager to gain experience at the 1,800-seat arena. Games begin in earnest each June and tickets are $5 per game. Learn more, or purchase tickets, at www.mhcmarlins.com.

Fishing the Rock

If you asked 10 people why they like to visit the Crystal Coast, no doubt ‘fishing’ would be mentioned at least eight out of 10 times. And the year’s biggest fishing tournament is right around the corner. For 59 years, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has drawn droves of spectators and media to the Morehead City waterfront. Visitors and residents visit shops and restaurants downtown while waiting for an angler to catch the top prize, a blue marlin. Prizes are awarded for game fish such as mahi mahi, tuna and wahoo, but it’s the elusive blue marlin weigh-ins that draws the crowds to the bleachers and the streets. With six days of fishing in the main tournament, there is daily excitement to see who is at the top of the leader board and in the running for the purse, which annually tops $1 million. Prior to 1957, the blue marlin was an elusive catch that most believed could only be caught in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. One had never been caught in the waters off Morehead City, though sailors often told stories of the blue marlin seen not too far offshore. Most were convinced these stories were just tall tales, but Morehead City’s Fabulous Fishermen Club decided to see if the sto22

www.nccoast.com

ries were true. The original members of the club were able to convince local business leaders to put a small cash prize together for the person to catch the first blue marlin. While boats began to venture further out, the first blue marlin wasn’t caught until Sept. 14, 1957. The angler was welcomed at the dock by an impromptu parade and a children’s red wagon full of the prize money. This year’s tournament is scheduled for June 9-17, drawing anglers from up and down the coast. Blue marlin are brought to the scales as soon as they are caught, while game fish weigh-ins occur Monday through Friday from 4-7pm and on Saturday from 3-6pm. The tournament kicks off with the Lady Angler Event from 6-9pm on Friday, June 9 at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. The Big Rock Lady Angler Tournament runs from 8am-1pm on Saturday, June 10, followed by the Captain’s Party at the Civic Center from 7-11pm. Tickets can be purchased at tournament headquarters or at the door. Can’t make it downtown to see the big ones make it to the dock? Keep tabs on all the action with the tournament’s live feed at thebigrock.com.

BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate. RUNNING THE ROAD IN BEAUFORT: Runners, walkers and baby joggers have traversed the Beaufort waterfront for nearly 40 years to raise money for scholarships for high school seniors throughout Carteret County. This year’s Historic Beaufort Road Race, sponsored annually by the Beaufort Old Towne Rotary, is planned for Saturday, July 8 on Front Street. The race includes 5K, 10K and 1-mile runs, wheelchair and baby jogger events and timed walks with individual and family registration rates. To learn more, or to sign up, visit www.runsignup.com.

PROMOTING PRESERVATION: Beaufort’s Rachel Carson Reserve, seen just across Taylors Creek from the Beaufort waterfront, is a haven for birds, wildlife and wild horses. Buddy Up Memorial Competition Planned for July 29-30

By: David Taylor Among the many events the Crystal Coast has to offer during the summer months, there is one you don’t want to miss – the Buddy Pelletier Memorial Longboard Classic. The annual surfing competition is held in memory of the late Buddy Pelletier of Carteret County, an avid surfer and recent inductee into the Surfing Hall of Fame. The competition, referred to locally as “The Buddy,” has hosted the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation. Every year surfers from the East Coast, Florida, California and even Puerto Rico converge on the beach all over the world flock to the Crystal Coast to enjoy friendly competition and support the foundation. This year’s event will be held July 29-30 at the Oceanana Pier in Atlantic Beach with age divisions from 8 and under to 55 and over. The surfing competition isn’t just for surfers, though. Entry fees, T-shirt sales and other donations help fund three college scholarships to members of the East Coast surfing community. “We want to help students excel in and out of the water and are very proud of our 100 percent graduation record,” said Jessica Holleman, one of 30

www.nccoast.com

the event’s organizers. “The foundation also gives humanitarian aid to individuals and has provided reduced-price CPR and first-aid to members of the surfing community, who often find themselves in a position to render assistance to swimmers in trouble.” For many, this mid-summer contest has become a tradition, not only for the prime chance to catch a few waves, but also to pay homage to the competition’s namesake, Buddy Pelletier. A top-ranked professional surfer and three-time winner of the Puerto Rican National Longboard Championship, Pelletier came home to the Crystal Coast in the early 1990s to spend his final days with friends and family before succumbing to cancer. Surfing begins Saturday, July 29 at 7am each day. Saturday’s heats will be followed by a beach party with live entertainment. The surfing continues on Sunday, with awards typically presented mid-afternoon. The entry form and additional information about the contest, sponsorship opportunities and the foundation can be found at www. buddypelletier.com or by calling 252-725-9277.

Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE

The trials and tribulations of North Carolina’s third oldest town are preserved and remembered through the nearly 60-year-old Beaufort Historical Association and its accompanying site. With restored buildings and a variety of annual programs, the BHA transports visitors back to the first days of “Fish Towne.” Learn more at www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

FORT MACON STATE PARK

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE

HISTORY MUSEUM OF CARTERET COUNTY

The 56-mile of Cape Lookout National Seashore is home to some of the most natural undeveloped stretches of beach to be found in the United States today. The three barrier islands that make up the park are only accessible by private boat or water ferry, so getting there may require a little planning as well as reservations during the busy summer months. But it’s well worth the journey. Find info at www.nps.gov/calo.

CORE SOUND WATERFOWL MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTER Located on Harkers Island,

this clearinghouse of Down East heritage is a must stop for anyone curious about this culturally-rich rural region. Once dependent on the water that surrounds it, Down East families entwined with boat building, decoy carving, hunting and fishing – a story that is told through community exhibits, artifacts and special programs. Details: 252-728-1500, www. coresound.com.

CROATAN NATIONAL FOREST

Ready for a hike? Get back to nature with the Croatan National Forest, with its collection of hiking trails, boat launches, campgrounds and day-use areas. The Croatan is home to a large number of carnivorous plants native to the area, including the Venus flytrap. Headquarters is located at 141 East Fisher Ave., just outside of New Bern. Visit www.fs.usda.gov. 40

www.nccoast.com

With a new visitor’s center and a schedule of daily programs, the state’s second most visited park continues to draw visitors to the northern peak of Bogue Banks with its 385 acres of beach, dunes and maritime forest. The well-preserved pentagonal brick fortress garrisoned for the Spanish-American War is always a favorite. Visit www.ncparks.gov.

Morehead City’s only museum focuses on the rich, abundant history of this waterfront area. Visit an early school room, peek in to Carteret County’s fishing industry and touch the wheels of spy Emeline Pigott’s carriage. The Jack Spencer Goodwin Library, lauded for its genealogy materials, is available for public research. Details: 252-247-7533, www.thehistoryplace.org.

NC AQUARIUM AT PINE KNOLL SHORES

From the Mountains to the Sea, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores explores the wildlife of North Carolina’s waterways with a focus on preservation of the state’s delicate ecosystems. One of the highlights, the 306,000-gallon Living Shipwreck, features sand tiger sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of fish gliding around a three-quarter-scale replica of a German U-boat found off the coast. Details: 252-247-4003, www.ncaquariums.com.

NC MARITIME MUSEUM

One of three maritime museums in the state system, the flagship in Beaufort tells the tale of Eastern North Carolina’s long-standing relationship with the ocean. Museum staff members have been involved with the preservation of artifacts excavated from the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard the Pirate’s vessel that was lost just outside Beaufort inlet. For more info, visit www.ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com.

NEW BERN FIREMEN’S MUSEUM

Trace the steps of the first chartered fire brigade, the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company, and its competitors, the New Bern Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1. Established in 1955, the museum is currently raising funds to restore the Central Fire Station on Broad Street to its 1928 appearance, with hopes of relocating into the space. Details: 252-636-4087, www.newbernfiremuseum.com.

TRYON PALACE

This regal centerpiece to New Bern’s historic districts is a reproduction of the mansion constructed in 1770 for Colonial Governor William Tryon, who, after spending just a year in the home, fled North Carolina to become governor of New York. The original home was destroyed by fire in 1798. Site includes the NC History Center, a state-of-the-art museum, theater and meeting space. Learn more at www. tryonpalace.org. COASTER

Tee Time

Golf enthusiasts rave that Eastern North Carolina suits them to a tee as soon as they discover the terrific and unique courses of the Crystal Coast. Most courses take full advantage of the area’s natural beauty and are built around maritime forests or near the water. When your eye’s not on the ball or focused on the hole, the Crystal Coast’s courses and their natural surroundings are sights to be seen. Spring and fall are considered two of the favorite times for golfing in the area with sunny days and cooler temps, but golfing is truly a year-round attraction in Eastern North Carolina as our terrific climate allows for play almost any time. Most courses feature clubhouses, resident pros, well-equipped pro shops and are open to the public at great rates. All you have to do is call for a tee time. And if you’re a Crystal Coast resident and golfer, ask about the courses’ benefit tournaments held throughout the year. The community is always looking for teams and individuals for tournament play to benefit local organizations. Featured here are some of the best local courses when it comes to North Carolina’s “golf coast.” BEAR TRAIL GOLF CLUB 444 Harris Creek Road, Jacksonville 910-346-8160

Readers’ Aw Best of the Best We won’t deny it – we have some pretty awesome businesses here along the Crystal Coast. From restaurants and shops to equipment rentals and real estate agencies, there are loads of small companies dedicated to making life more enjoyable at the beach. Each summer, we take a moment to recognize the best of the best. But instead of picking our own favorite things, we’d much rather hear what our residents and visitors are enjoying. Take a look at the categories and try to fill in as many as you can, then tear it out and mail it to: NCCOAST Readers’ Awards, 201 North 17th St., Morehead City, NC 28557. We’re always happy to meet our readers, so if you would rather drop it by our office, that’s great too. Internet savvy? We’ve got you covered. Beach Days While there are more than 100 access points tucked into neighborhoods along Bogue Banks, the 25-mile barrier island that runs from Fort Macon to Emerald Isle, they are generally designed for the residents who live in the area and offer limited to no parking for visitors. There are, however, a large number of public beach access points with generous parking for visitors to the area. Several of the larger sites do charge for parking during the season (generally April-September). We have noted where a charge may be incurred. The list below follows the beach from the east to west.

FORT MACON STATE PARK

At the end of Hwy 58, guests will find 277 free parking spaces near the fort with several beach access points on the other. Closer to Atlantic Beach, the Bath House area features 317 free parking spots, bathrooms, concessions and a boardwalk.

IRON STEAMER With 45 paid parking spaces, bathroom facilities and showers this popular spot at Mile Marker 7.5 is home to the former Iron Steamer Pier and the wreckage of the Confederate blockade runner Prevensey. TRINITY CENTER This retreat at Mile Marker 9.5 reserves 20 free parking spaces for beach access under the water tower. Of note, parking is located on the south side of Hwy 58. SALTER PATH 48

Touring Beaufort’s Historic Homes June is historic Beaufort’s time to shine. The Beaufort Historical Association’s annual Old Homes and Gardens Tour draws droves of visitors to the live oak-lined streets of this seaport village in hopes of garnering a glimpse into some of the area’s most prestigious homes. Planned for June 23-24, this year’s tour of North Carolina’s third oldest town is sure to charm visitors once again. Boasting more than 200 homes in the National Registered Historic District that are over 100 years old, and several that are more than 200 years old, Beaufort has received some well-deserved attention as a tourist destination. Every year the town invites visitors and locals alike to breathe in the fragrant salty air, stroll leisurely down the tree-lined streets, and discover its quaint history. This longtime tradition is the perfect way to see how the town has preserved its past while celebrating its present. This year the Old Homes & Gardens Tour features 12 private homes from the historic to the newly-constructed, 10 gardens and nine artists’ studios. The restored buildings on the Beaufort Historic Site will be open both days with docents in period dress. 50

Be sure to check out the Antique Car Show on Saturday, June 24, an opening concert by the Purvis Chapel Choir on Thursday, June 22, and narrated tours of the Beaufort Historic District aboard a vintage English double-decker bus. Visitors on the tour will be treated to a wide variety of décor, from early Beaufort historic houses furnished with period pieces to historic homes completely remodeled with bright coastal colors. This year three new homes are featured as the tour reflects Beaufort’s many years of history, not just the past. Opening their doors to guests are: Frieda Menzer and Rob McArthur and the circa 1790 Norcum House; Carrie and Scott Nelson’s circa 1820 Methodist Parsonage; Marianna Hollinshed’s circa 1848 Buckman House; Becky and Tom Oxholm; Elizabeth & Don Gould’s circa 1850 Hackburn-Fulford House; Deborah and Charles Llewellyn’s circa 1778 Rumley House; Nancy and Bill Fuqua’s circa 1772 Gibble House; Fran & Dan Krautheim’s circa 1777 Caleb Bell House; Betty and Gilles Cloutier’s circa 1709 Hammock House; the home of Ann and Worth Harris; the home of Eva and Tom Higgins; and the circa 1940

Fish House owned by Faye Styron. Complementing the homes are the gardens owned by Priscilla Murphy, Anne and Gerry Currier, Stacy Meislohn of Calypso Cottage, Gail Barnes, Jonathan Haas and Kim Bell of The Inn on Turner, Ron Hux, Christine and Stan Lamb of The Pecan Tree Inn, Donna Babington of The Ann Street Inn, Susan and Joe Johnson, and Brenda & Bill Oliffe. Festivities begin with the Kickoff Party featuring the Bartender’s Challenge Competition held on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic Site on Saturday, June 3 from 5:30-7:30pm. Held in conjunction with featured artist Stephen Moore’s art show opening, guests will be treated to great local food as well as Moore’s coastal series of paintings. This party also serves as a big thank you to the home and garden owners who work so hard to get their properties ready for the wonderful tour that showcases the best of Beaufort. The tour weekend begins with a concert by the Purvis Chapel Choir on Thursday, June 22 at 7pm at Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church at 215 Craven St. in Beaufort. The historic church is in the National Heritage Registry and believed to be the oldest in the county that’s still in use. This event will pay tribute to this year’s honorary chairs, Shirley and David Pleace, as well as the hundreds of volunteers who help make the busy weekend so successful. The concert is free and open to the public with a reception following in the parish hall.

Held in conjunction with the tour, the Antique Show & Sale features a variety of unique dealers from all over the east coast. This year’s show will feature favorites who return year after year, like Michael Weinstein who offers vintage jewelry and watches and Ricky Chandler with his eclectic mix of treasures. There is a selection of new vendors this year including “When Radio Was King” who offers a collection of restored vintage radios, some offer blue tooth capabilities. Since 1960, this annual weekend has not only been the largest fundraiser for the Beaufort Historical Association but has also been a time of community involvement and pride where Beaufort residents open the doors of their splendid homes to help and support the BHA’s preservation efforts and educational programs. This annual event gives visitors the chance to learn more about the wonderful history of Beaufort – a seaport deeply ingrained in the heart of Carteret County. Tickets for the Old Homes & Gardens Tour are $18 in advance and $20 at the door, and the Antiques Show & Sale tickets are $8 and good for all three days. Combination tickets for both events are available for $24 in advance and $25 the days of the events. Tickets for the Kick-Off Party are $30 and combination tickets for all three events are $45.
