THE Beach From Atlantic Beach, the oldest of the five beach towns that dot Bogue Banks, to Emerald Isle, the largest, visitors find mile after mile of sun, sand and surf. The collection of communities feature a variety of accommodations, restaurants and shopping. The area, while limited in full-time population, swells each summer as second home owners and vacationers make the trek to the shore.

STARRY NIGHT: Want to learn more about the night sky? An astronomy program, complete with opportunities to view space through a telescope, is being held once a month at the bath house at Fort Macon State Park. The program begins at 7pm on Friday, Oct. 13 and Friday, Nov. 10. For additional details, call 252-726-3775.

FALL FISHING: Fall along the Crystal Coast means one thing to anglers – great surf fishing. It’s also time for fisherman to put their skills to the test with the annual Gordie McAdams Speckled Trout Fishing Tournament. It’s free to sign up, but there is one little catch – all of the entries must be caught on foot, either on the beach or a pier. Sponsored by the Emerald Isle Parks and Rec folks with The Reel Outdoors, the tournament sees hundreds vying for bragging rights each year. The tournament runs from Oct. 14-Nov. 25. Learn more at 252-354-6350.

FEELING FESTIVE: Emerald Isle graces our calendar each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving with the first Christmas parade of the season. Always a festive event, this year’s parade is slated for 3pm on Saturday, Nov. 25. After the parade, join the town staff at Merchant’s Park for the lightening of the Christmas tree and free refreshments. 8

www.nccoast.com

UNDER THE SEA: While there is a lot of great programming at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, one of the largest, and one of our favorites, is Trick or Treat Under the Sea. On Oct. 2627, little ones age 3 and up don their costumes and trek through the exhibits and booths hosted by area businesses and organizations. Special exhibits are on tap as well as fun activities for the kids. The cost is $11 per person.

Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come

10

www.nccoast.com

to the National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

“Near the center of Bogue Banks, a barrier island off Morehead City, you pull into the parking lot of what looks like a 1960’s burger stand. There’s no dining room, just a small easy-to-miss brick building. At the window, you place your order (trust us, make it a shrimpburger). The server writes the order on a paper sack, which soon will be handed out with your meal inside: fried shrimp, tartar sauce, coleslaw, and ketchup, all piled on a steamed bun. Messy and totally yummy.” - Coastal Living Magazine

THE MAINLAND From Cape Carteret on the shores of the White Oak River to the downtown Morehead City waterfront, the small communities that dot the Carteret County mainland are as eclectic as their residents. As the retail hub of the region, centrallylocated Morehead City is a haven for shoppers with its small boutiques and major chain stores. But don’t overlook the smaller communities as each has a flavor all its own and plenty of treasures to explore.

JUMPIN’ MULLETS: When most people hear the word ‘mullet’ the instant thought is the party-in-the-back haircut. That is, of course, as long as you don’t live in Swansboro, where the annual Mullet Festival has been celebrating the popular bait fish for more than 60 years. More than 100 vendors, live music, a mullet fry and a down home Saturday morning parade will once again beckon the masses on Oct. 14-15. Admission is free and shuttle transportation is available from marked parking areas.

FREE GARDEN TOUR: Enjoy free admission for the grand gardens at Tryon Palace, New Bern, during Mumfest, Oct. 13-14, and view hundreds of mums in bloom. Want to take a piece of Tryon Palace home with you? The Fall Heritage Plant Sale the same weekend will let you do just that. From ornamental kale to colorful mums, plants raised in the on-site nursery will be available to the public from 10am-4pm each day.

IT’S GETTING ‘CHILI’: Chicken wings, red chili and chili verde will be the focus on Oct. 20-21 in Havelock as the 36th annual NC Chili Festival takes over Walter B. Jones Park. Wings takes center stage on Friday, with the red and green chili competitions taking place from 10am to 5pm on Saturday. Lots of live entertainment and fun for the kiddies make this a great event for the whole family. Learn more at chilifestival.org. 18

LUNCH WITH A DASH OF HISTORY: Popular raconteur Rodney Kemp returns to the History Museum of Carteret County this fall for monthly lunch-time history programs. Enjoy a catered lunch, with a hint of history and personal observation from Kemp. Events are planned for Oct. 13, Nov. 10 and Dec. 15. The cost is $15 with lunch, $8.50 without. Make reservations by calling 252-247-7533, ext. 1.

BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate.

BASH AT THE BOATSHOP: French Caribbean food, an open bar, live music and both live and silent auctions are expected for this year’s Boatshop Bash, an annual fundraiser for the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum. Next year has been dubbed the Year of Blackbeard and the Saturday, Nov. 4 event will officially kick off a year full of Caribbean pirates. Tickets are $75 per person for members and $100 for others. Learn more by calling 252-728-7317.

HORSE WATCHING: Fall is a great time to catch a glimpse of the Carrot Island horses wandering the shore, especially in the evening. Want a closer look at our wild horses? On Monday, Oct. 16, Dr. Sue Stuska of the Cape Lookout National Park Service will lead a tour of Shackleford Banks. The walking tour is free, however, guests must pay for ferry transportation to the island. Dress comfortably and be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, bug repellent and closed toe shoes that can handle a little mud. Learn more at 252-728-2250. 28

www.nccoast.com

MIGRATING FLOCKS: If bird watching is more your bag – fall is a great time to watch migrating birds heading south for the winter and there is no better place to catch an upclose glimpse than the Cedar Island national Wildlife Refuge. Over 270 species can be viewed at the site – about 100 of those are full-time residents. There are a variety of hiking trails to help you explore the 14,500-acrew refuge. To learn more, visit www.fws.gove/refuge/cedar_island.

GOBBLE, GOBBLE: Celebrate Thanksgiving with the Beaufort Historical Association on Sunday, Nov. 19, as local restaurants team up to compose the perfect holiday meal. The event runs from 11:30am1pm and guests can choose to eat on site or take their meal home. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the event. To purchase tickets, or learn more about the event, call 252-728-5225.

Flying High at Kite Fest Carolina Kite Fest returns to the Sands Villa Resort, Atlantic Beach, Oct. 28-29, coloring the sky with kites of all sizes. The free family-friendly event is organized annually by Don Dixon, owner of Kites Unlimited, as a thank you to his patrons and the community. The festival runs from 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday, with a night fly slated for Saturday. Spectators can see kites of all shapes and sizes soar through the salty air. As long as the wind cooperates, everything from team flying, extreme ascensions and drops, dragons, facets/boxes, sky skimmers and more are demonstrated. Youngsters will even have a chance to make a kite of their own – and if they’re lucky, catch a few tips from the pros. For newcomers who haven’t attended the festival before, it doesn’t take long to realize that kites have come a long way from their diamond shaped ancestors. In this celebration of visiting professional

kite flyers, locals and novices, it’s not uncommon for huge octopi, cartoon characters and unimaginable spinning displays of color to cast shadows on the sandy beach below. In fact, so many kites are flying at this event that it’s often difficult for spectators to stand on the sidelines without grabbing a line and taking part in one of the mass kite ascensions. And that is exactly what Don Dixon hopes for – participation is strongly encouraged. Time is set aside from 10am until noon each day of the festival for kids interested in building a kite of their own with supplies provided by Kites Unlimited. If the wind allows, youngsters may also have a chance to get their sweets before Halloween with several candy drops held over the two-day period. Be sure to watch for scheduled mass ascensions and a night fly on Saturday night, always a fun way to end the day. For more information, call Kites Unlimited at 252-247-7011.

Decoy Fest Returns Those who have ventured into the more rural areas of Carteret County already know that Down East is simply one of those special places, seemingly untouched by the modern conveniences that clutter daily lives. Here, local residents are happy discussing recipes for conch stew, building new lures, bantering about fishing and boat building and yes, decoys – the centerpiece for two December celebrations on Harkers Island. This sleepy, traditional community springs to life each December as the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center showcase the artistry of some of the area’s most talented craftsmen. Planned for Dec. 2-3, the two events combine to create a full weekend of adventure and fun. The 30th annual Core Sound Decoy Festival is hosted annually by the carvers guild and based at Harkers Island Elementary School, filling the halls with the smell of burlap and packing the classrooms and gymnasium with decoys from around the country. Held to honor waterfowl history and tradition, the event features about 100 exhibitors displaying and selling decoys and waterfowl artifacts. Decoy competitions will be held both days and 36

www.nccoast.com

feature decorative and non-decorative (floating) contemporary carvings. Additional events include children’s decoy painting, retriever demonstrations, head carving competition and a loon calling competition. There will also be a decoy auction on Saturday at the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild building, located near the Harkers Island bridge. To learn more about the festival, visit www.decoyguild.com or call 252-838-8818. Waterfowl Weekend takes place at the Waterfowl Museum, which is located next to the National Park Service at the end of Island Road. Visit community exhibits, browse the wares of regional artists, take in some live entertainment, tour the education tent and chat with decoy carvers from around the county and up and down the coast. Completed in 2010, the Waterfowl Museum is nothing short of a clearinghouse of Down East culture and heritage. Chat with boat builders, get pointers on quilting or enjoy a traditional homemade feast. An array of vendors come out each year in support of the facility, bringing a wealth of material to share. To learn more about the museum, visit www.coresound.com or call 252728-1500.

Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE

The trials and tribulations of North Carolina’s third oldest town are preserved and remembered through the nearly 60-year-old Beaufort Historical Association and its accompanying site. With restored buildings and a variety of annual programs, the BHA transports visitors back to the first days of “Fish Towne.” Learn more at www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE

The 56-mile of Cape Lookout National Seashore is home to some of the most natural undeveloped

stretches of beach to be found in the United States today. The three barrier islands that make up the park are only accessible by private boat or water ferry, so getting there may require a little planning as well as reservations during the busy summer months. But it’s well worth the journey. Find info at www.nps.gov/calo.

CORE SOUND WATERFOWL MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTER Located on Harkers Island,

this clearinghouse of Down East heritage is a must stop for anyone curious about this culturally-rich rural region. Once dependent on the water that surrounds it, Down East families entwined with boat building, decoy carving, hunting and fishing – a story that is told through community exhibits, artifacts and special programs. Details: 252-728-1500, www. coresound.com.

CROATAN NATIONAL FOREST

Ready for a hike? Get back to nature with the Croatan National Forest, with its collection of hiking trails, boat launches, campgrounds and day-use areas. The Croatan is home to a large number of carnivorous plants native to the area, including the Venus flytrap. Headquarters is located at 141 East Fisher Ave., just outside of New Bern. Visit www.fs.usda.gov.

FORT MACON STATE PARK

With a new visitor’s center and a schedule of daily programs, the state’s second most visited park continues to draw visitors to the northern peak of Bogue Banks with its 385 acres of beach, dunes and maritime forest. The well-preserved pentagonal brick fortress garrisoned for the Spanish-American War is always a favorite. Visit www.ncparks.gov.

HISTORY MUSEUM OF CARTERET COUNTY Morehead City’s only museum focuses on the rich, 40

abundant history of this waterfront area. Visit an early school room, peek in to Carteret County’s fishing industry and touch the wheels of spy Emeline Pigott’s carriage. The Jack Spencer Goodwin Library, lauded for its genealogy materials, is available for public research. Details: 252-247-7533, www.thehistoryplace.org.

NC AQUARIUM AT PINE KNOLL SHORES

From the Mountains to the Sea, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores explores the wildlife of North Carolina’s waterways with a focus on preservation of the state’s delicate ecosystems. One of the highlights, the 306,000-gallon Living Shipwreck, features sand tiger sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of fish gliding around a three-quarter-scale replica of a German U-boat found off the coast. Details: 252-247-4003, www.ncaquariums.com.

NC MARITIME MUSEUM

One of three maritime museums in the state system, the flagship in Beaufort tells the tale of Eastern North Carolina’s long-standing relationship with the ocean. Museum staff members have been involved with the preservation of artifacts excavated from the

Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard the Pirate’s vessel that was lost just outside Beaufort inlet. For more info, visit www.ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com.

NEW BERN FIREMEN’S MUSEUM

Trace the steps of the first chartered fire brigade, the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company, and its competitors, the New Bern Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1. Established in 1955, the museum is currently raising funds to restore the Central Fire Station on Broad Street to its 1928 appearance, with hopes of relocating into the space. Details: 252-636-4087, www.newbernfiremuseum.com.

TRYON PALACE

This regal centerpiece to New Bern’s historic districts is a reproduction of the mansion constructed in 1770 for Colonial Governor William Tryon, who, after spending just a year in the home, fled North Carolina to become governor of New York. The original home was destroyed by fire in 1798. Site includes the NC History Center, a state-of-the-art museum, theater and meeting space. Learn more at www. tryonpalace.org. COASTER
